Thanks for these videos! My laZY Boy sofa arm has the EXACT same problem that you have shown here. Question? Can I order the arm? I have reupholstered furniture before so I am good with that part. If I follow your video and take pics before disassembly I think I should be okay. My sofa looks almost exactly like what you are working on here. I can find out the model

@kathleen p - Yes, as long as the part is still available. See this video for more on ordering La-z-boy parts -----> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5M6d40rxH-s.html

Hey recliner guy! Thanks for having these videos up. I'm hoping you can give me an idea of where to start. I got a couch with recliners on each end that had been damaged by a forklift. I removed the arm and got the upholstery repaired. However I didn't check before I took the arm off it the recliner part on the damaged side worked. The other side works fine. When I reattached the arm it didn't work. There are 2 parts though. A back part which can help you sit up more, which does work, and the foot rest and laying back part, which does not. Both switches are on the same panel and the light indicators comes on so there is power to it. I've checked all the wires I can see and I don't see any disconnected or damaged. When I try the for rest part there is no sound at all. So it doesn't sound like it's trying to move but can't. It just doesn't do anything. Any suggestions?

@Adam David - For starters, IF everything worked fine before the damage, there's a high probability that you have a loose connection or damaged wire. Double check that. Next I would check the section for further damage from the forklift, beyond the arm frame. If everything looks good, the next step would be to start swapping out the electrical parts using parts from the side that works. Start with the power supply (if there's one for each side). Bring the working one over and connect it to the non-working side. If that doesn't get it working, start bringing the other electrical parts over -- one-by-one -- until you find the problem. Keep in mind that you don't have to fully install the parts. Example: Disconnect the activation buttons from the working side. Bring them over to plug them in, but don't install them. You're just using them to test. Once you find the failed part(s), you know what to order to repair the recliner. And also make sure you have sufficient power from the outlet.

I was gonna ask, why not replace all the foam? Looks really time consuming, but not really hard.
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 Год назад
@Scott W. - Yes, whenever you replace any frame, it's a good idea to replace the foam, frame cardboard, or anything else that you encounter during the repair that is not in good condition. However, if those parts are in good condition, you can reuse them.

Great videos. I'm gonna teach my family how to work our rocker recliner. Question for ya. What is the plastic knob for on a lazyboy dual recliner. The knob turns on a threaded rod and adjusts a spring. What does this knob do??
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 2 года назад
@Frank Hansen - Sounds like the knob adjusts tension for the spring. Can you email a photo to pete@reclinerrepairguy.com?

Great videos. Thanks. I've got a James and it has a really strange problem. I'm hoping you have seen it and can send me in the right direction. No matter which button I press on the controls the vibration starts and lasts for about 10 seconds after I let go of the button. The vibration is stronger then normal. The buttons perform their normal functions even while the chair is vibrating. I can't find any info on this. Thanks in advance.

@Fred Tanner - Hmmm... I haven't encountered anything like that yet. I would suspect the control box (junction box), if there is one on that chair. But that's just a guess. Contact your La-z-boy dealer, if you haven't already. If they sell a lot of that style, they may have encountered this problem and have some suggestions.

The cardboard part gets me... it's so cheaply constructed. Thay is what I have bent inside of the arm of mine. Why can't they use a solids lightweight filler that expanded to full the shape and hardens rather than cardboard over and empty space? Great video though!!

@Wyatt Simmons - Thanks! Yeah, many people are surprised that mass-produced brands today like La-z-boy, Flexsteel, Ashley, Lane, etc. do not make high-quality furniture. I have more videos about frame construction & quality on the ReclinerRepairGuy.com website.

I agree. I found this out years ago when a side panel fell off my sofa. It was from a popular furniture store and was not cheap. It was a piece of cardboard covered in fabric and stapled on! Years later a friend gave me an Italian made leather sectional. I decided to reupholster it as the leather started to get crappy after years of abuse from kids. That sofa was made with incredible attention to detail and excellent materials. It came out amazing.

@Decontee Sawyer - Yes, well I'm not suggesting that La-z-boy (& other mass-produced furniture brands) makes high-quality furniture. Because they don't. As can clearly be seen in the video. ;)

@@reclinerrepairguy4155 Yea, I should have inserted the "Tongue in Cheek" symbol with that comment. On the other hand when you have something apart and see an obvious point of failure, sometimes a couple glue blocks/brace will help out a design flaw in the OEM construction.
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 Год назад
@@deconteesawyer5758 - I get your point, and that's a good strategy when there's one obvious weak point on an otherwise good-quality arm frame. That's not the case with the arm frame in the video. The OEM construction is absolute crap. It has numerous weaknesses & points of potential failure. And the osb board is among the poorest quality framing materials used in the furniture industry, so it can fail as well. So, if a couple of blocks or braces would help, I'd be happy to oblige. But the overall frame quality is just too low in this case.

@@reclinerrepairguy4155 You have the advantage of being able to see the construction, unlike us poor saps confounded with a bewildering array of choices of junk, with everything hidden under the skirts and sales hype. Do you know of any way for those of us not in the trade to compare and evaluate recliners? With cars, and most goods there are abundant web sites, magazines, reviews and consumer reports. Not so much the case here.
