msg is not bad for you, id just use msg if you want it to taste like kewpie. also, you can literally buy a small food processor for this price so this thing is pointless

They definitely know msg is fine for you, the dashi powder has msg in it if its something like hondashi. Now if it is a fancier powder just made from kombu and some form of katsuobushi (dried tuna), while it doesn't have powdered msg, it would taste even better as msg is meant to mimic the glutamic acid found in kombu, with the added depth of flavor.

*Kewpie was a syndicated comic strip* conceived in 1909 by American illustrator Rose Cecil O'Neill. In 1912 a series of dolls based on the comic became a runaway commercial success, and the title character was used in print ads for brands including Colgate, Jell-O, Kellogg's and Sears. Kewpie remained a household name globally for decades but as photography has all but replaced illustrations in product promotion, there are few remaining artifacts of Kewpie's former prominence--the most glorious among them being the legendary Japanese mayonnaise.

1. It's not a baby, it's a Kewpie doll. 2. Kewpie doesn't have sugar in it, though some of the knock-offs do. 3. This might be the stupidest device on the show yet. Just use a stick blender, or a regular blender, or a food processor, or electric beaters, or hell, it's really not _that_ hard to whisk.

bloodgain depending on manufacturing location, Kewpie does contain sugar depending on where it is produced
@KewpieFanClub
@KewpieFanClub 4 года назад
Like Liz said, our American mayonnaise products do have small amounts of sugar in them! The sugar acts as a preservative, since our American packaging isn’t made of the same multi-layered plastic that our Japanese packaging is. It’s necessary for keeping the same quality that we strive for while conforming to American packaging standards.
@bloodgain
@bloodgain 4 года назад
@@KewpieFanClub I think I can safely take your word for it. 😁 I have definitely bought Kewpie without sugar here, but maybe my local Asian grocer carries the imported one. They are often out of it, and that would help explain why. I wouldn't be so sure, except that I specifically look at the ingredients for sugar.
@LisaMarli
@LisaMarli 4 года назад
My imported Kewpie does not have sugar. Also no lemon juice. But it definitely has MSG and mustard (not listed separately, but I can definitely taste it). In fact, tasting my Best Foods and my Kewpie, that's the big difference in the flavor profile is the level of mustard.

I agree about how easy it is to use a simple, low-cost whisk to make delicious mayo or a Miracle Whip-like dressing. I've done it for over 40 years. However, I've used a blender and small food processor to emulsify a lot quicker, but it adds more things to wash after. Plus, I always use pasteurized eggs which people can buy or make themselves if they watch a youtube video showing the easy step-by-step process.

*Powdered dashi is essentially unrefined MSG.* While monosodium glutamate is the just the sodium salt of glutamic acid, powdered dashi comprises disodium inosinate, L-glutamate and 5’-ribonucleotides--all three of which stimulate the umami receptors. As a rule, better chefs prefer the enhanced flavour from synergistic compounds that are retained in the more natural product--like using evaporated sea salt rather than refined table salt.
@barbasfear16
@barbasfear16 4 года назад
@@vaffangool9196 exactly, refined msg was discovered from the seaweed in dashi. Dashi powder is essentially msg+ fish and seaweed flavoring. You may "leave out the salt" from a dish you seasoned with soy sauce but that doesn't make it a salt free food.

The Japanese Mayo Kewpie has somehow become a world favorite and honestly I understand why. But it’s SOOOO interesting how people who know the Japanese mayonnaise brand and probably have it in their fridge don’t even know about the baby mascot. Listen the name kewpie should honestly ring a bell?! Have a close look at the baby’s back and you will see a pair of wings. The creator of the kewpie doll is actually and American female Cartoonist names Rosie O’Neill, she said that the little fairylike baby doll came to her in a dream, and she named it Kewpie, named after the Roman God of love and lust “Cupid”, this was in the early 1900’s. Kewpie was introduced to Japan via a fusion anime based on the original kewpie cartoon series. And this is how kewpie was adopted by Japan. Kewpie dolls are also the mascot of many American brands, burger chains and so on. The original Rosie O’Neill kewpie dolls made by her is worth a fortune today and the old school rubber Japanese version is also worth a lot because it became a collectors item. I hope this answers your question about the baby on the front of the Japanese mayonnaise brand Kewpie.
