I just noticed, in this moment, Andy saves Red, by giving him a purpose once he gets out on parole ... Instead of being so afraid and taking his life like Brooks did, he went to that place Andy told him .. Such good movie

That's the thing. Andy figured Red would get out eventually (he even asked him about it). Red mentioned about being institutionalized now like Brooks had been and Andy, planning his escape, wanted to save Red from suicide by having him make that promise to go there and dig up what was buried there.

But what’s most amazing about that scene is when Andy tells Red about the Maine hayfield and the tree and the volcanic glass rock, which Red would have to pry up to see what’s underneath. When Andy says this there’s NOTHING buried under the rock. Andy doesn’t put it there until after he escapes. One of the greatest plot twists ever and people barely even realize it. The foreshadowing in this scene, the economy of words they speak, the superb performances, all make this one of the best scenes in one of the best movies ever made. A true masterpiece.

One element that is often overlooked in this scene is the lighting. Notice how they are in the shadow at the beginning, then when Andy says, "Get busy living, or get busy dying," he walks into the light. Then as he tempts Red with his secret, Red also walks toward the light, though not completely out of the shadow. It's perfect foreshadowing for the end of the movie. So so beautiful.

The suspense of what lies buried there, must have been unbearable .Even if Red had any thoughts of giving up, there was still an unanswered mystery. The need for an answer must've been soooo compelling. Andy knew how to save Red ,how to keep him alive, give him a purpose, greater than any adversity. Knowing that there is something buried, JUST 4 YOU, likely kept Red awake, for countless nights.Who could ask for a better friend? Brilliant indeed.

However when you know what he does later, re-watching it has a completely different meaning; he's excited and nervous about his escape he has planned later that night and he has trouble containing it, but he knows he must put up a façade to prevent others from knowing. Top notch acting from Tim Robbins.

The way Tim Robbins acts this out is just first class. I loves how he shifts over the conversation towards what seems like resentment and frustration. On first pass - you think its a resignation that his life is over and Norton has won... But It's his frustration at a few things: 1. At Red (a man he cares deeply for) for thinking this is all there is for them (while knowing there's much more to life) 2. at the institution for taking away his life to now - he's about to destroy his oppressors and that rage he has held towards them is starting to leak out 3. The man's about to put it all on the table - a one time chance to claim back his life and he's pushing through the fear of failure - the thought that "it's MY time" The "Get busy living or get busy dying" part, where despite his frame of frustration - is actually full of optimism when you consider he tells Red all the details of the future he wants. It's simply brilliant acting - all these emotions perfectly captured over 4 minutes.

I love this movie, this acting, this writing. For those who don't realize, Andy during this entire scene from when Red tells him he's been institutionalised, is digging Red's own escape tunnel. He is set on giving his friend a way out, a way to be free, free to hope. That's why he puts Red through this convoluted series of tasks, to go to Buckston and find a hayfield with a slab of volcanic glass, they are all steps that lead to a mystery Red will want to solve because of the promise he made to his friend. And because of that, Red escapes the fate of Brooks, because Andy gives him a reason to 'get busy living' and break free of the prison bars inside Red's own head. Jesus Lord how I love this movie. A modern day masterpiece that will always make me cry at the end, for those dear friends wo get to meet beside the Paciffic and embrace. 😂😂😂😂😂 Get busy livin, or get busy dying. That's God damn right.

I've been trying to work out what it is that makes this film special, because that's what it is. I think perhaps it's that every human emotion is on display. The writing; the acting; the storyline; the music; the finale.....all brilliant. For me it's the best movie ever made, and that's saying something.
@dclark142002
@dclark142002 5 лет назад
Its special because it taps into something primal about how we view ourselves. Especially as we get older, and we view our past and its mistakes...and the consequences of those mistakes holding us prisoner trapping us into our current situation. I first watched this film thinking it was about Andy Dufresne...and it is, but the central character isn't Andy...it's Red. Red is the one telling us the story. Red is the one whose character is changing. In the end, the story is Red's...and is Andy's only in so far as his story changes Red's story. Red starts the movie as the 'only guilty man in Shawshank', he is the only one who self identifies as a guilty man, and guilty of something life changingly heinous. The film shows how Andy's interactions with Red lead to Red's salvation and freedom. How Red could move on from the past, leave the trap of his own walls, and 'get busy living'.

@@sergeidiaz2284what critics, I recall it had 5 star reviews, Ebert and siskel gave it 5 stars thumbs up, I think it got drowned out by the release of pulp fiction 4 weeks later, you see its a prison movie, and mostly men went to see it, and men do not talk, so they just didn't spread the word I guess, later on 1995 1996 on video when woman saw it the word of mouth spread the news, then it spread like wildfire, my theory is the news of OJ Simpsons arrest and impending trial just put the studios off from prompting the movie

Given that Andy is talking about that hayfield in past tense, it would not be beyond his ability to pay someone to put that cache and that volcanic rock there in advance. Meaning he was already thinking about that town and the hotel and that boat beyond that simple conversation. He had given it a lot of thought and already pegged Red as the guy to help him get started. I mean, hell, he had been tunneling through that wall for nearly 20 years; Andy wasn’t the kind of man to not plan a few years ahead after the fact. He probably also used the years to study the infrastructure of the prison itself, in particular the sewer pipe. How far it ran under the prison, whether there was a chance of him getting stuck down there and dying, whether the bag that was caring the evidence and the new suit would keep together and water tight, and whether or not you could stand all of the shit smelling fumes for the full 500 yards. A man does not successfully create a fake identity from prison for money laundering purposes with no one suspecting without entertain the notion of actually using that identity on the outside. Like Red observed, Tommy’s death prompted andy to put his escape plan into motion. That and also the sadism of the warden and two months of solitary to beat him into submission, of course. And he had 20 years to work out all the kinks and prepare contingencies in case something happened unexpectedly. So no; arranging for that box and that rock to be placed in that hayfield on that wall is not beyond andy’s abilities.
