Red Notice is a new Netflix action-heist blockbuster starring Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and Wonder Woman Gal Gadot and Specimen Dwayne Johnson -- which you might've already forgotten about it. Despite this movie being very successful, it doesn't leave any kind of impact, at least not until the eventual sequel comes along. And to find out a few key reasons why that is, let's contrast it against the master of successful blockbusters, Michael Bay. Today's Anatomy of a Failure is all about the dangers of the consumable movie.

-

I mean that’s what happens when you have actors who practically play the same characters in every movie. Ryan and the rock act the same way in everything. I’m kind of worried about black adam because I’m getting the feeling it will be black adam playing the rock instead of the other way around. I personally like gal when she’s not playing Wonder Woman because she has more of a personality when in other things. I can’t take Ryan anymore. I don't know exactly how film distribution works, but I doubt that Netflix has a lot to do with the making of the movie. What I believe happened was that the Rawson Thurber (writer, director) was shopping his script around and Netflix just overbid every other company for the distribution of it, probably because of the big names. I'm not sure, but I think Netflix gives a lot of creators pretty much the freedom to do whatever they want. That can result in great content, but also... Red Notice.

For me it was the scene where Gal Gadot reveals to them that she owns the prison (or whatever it was,it’s been a while). I was genuinely confused as to why she had the guards bring The Rock along too. That made absolutely no sense to me at all. I was watching the movie with a friend who had seen it before and he could not give me an answer that made sense without spoiling the movie. So yeah. Bad twist. Fun reveal! But bad twist.

This reminds me of how underwhelming and by the numbers that 6 Underground movie was. I've come to the realization that Ryan Reynolds just did Deadpool and due to its success, people are unwilling to admit it was a one-off. Gal Gadot is kinda getting there too. She was good in Wonder Woman but I've not seen her do anything else that's any good. Rock is now just an indestructible muscle guy in everything. It's kinda sad that the last time he actually tried to play on that was in Pain & Gain all the way back in 2013. He was muscular still but he wasn't just some immortal action hero.

Your comment about these actors just playing themselves in different scenarios is so perfect. It isn't necessarily bad they have such strong personalities/ fame, but it works better when the characters they portray fits the actual person/what they are known for like a glove. Take for example, Reynolds playing Deadpool. He fits the role and the movie so well because it fits the persona we have come to expect Reynolds. We get the right amount of emotion/sarcasm/humor from him and his character because they are so similar that they mesh together and are more believable. Hope this makes sense.

I watched it with my boyfriend and halfway through the movie we realized that it's a compilation of themes we've seen countless times before. It was so ridiculously and horribly predictable that I became bored and indifferent towards it. The only reason that I stayed relatively focused and entertained was because we made a drinking game out of it. Whenever one of us predicted that something would happen, and it obviously happened, we would take a shot. Best example: they struggled so much to get into the vault. Gal gadot is obviously gonna be waiting for them with some smug tease line. Wow, big surprise. Another example: after all of those adventures they finally made it to the nazi storage. The interpol is obviously gonna come in next moment, with no logical explanation of how they tracked them down. Etc, etc. We ended up wasted.

I would maybe disagree with Filmento on Cruise being the biggest movie star on Earth, but I think he would agree with me that Will Smith as some guy I guess in Gemini Man in theaters isn't interesting to people the same way Will Smith as Batman villain Deadshot in Suicide Squad or the Genie in Aladdin in theaters would seem. Netflix is the perfect place to watch "real" movies that are marketed with attractive & likeable actors; there's nothing risky in sitting on the couch, pressing a few buttons, & zoning out, as opposed to putting on clothes, driving somewhere, walking, & paying cash monies in a theater on an original movie that might suck lol.

I have no problem with her doing that, but not when one of the characters can take a bull attack and come away unscathed. One movie that did this pretty well was Mad Max Fury Road. The female lead is pretty badass and can stand toe to toe with males, but the males are also shown to be vulnerable, so it makes sense. When the Rock is out there acting like a superhuman, you can't have him conveniently get beat up by a woman who looks like a toothpick.

This movie also serves as a case study on how not to do a good plot twist. When a twist is done well, you think back to all the moments where it was subtly hinted at but you didn't notice at the time, or you feel happy how you knew this was going to happen because you did catch the hints. With Red Notice, though, all it made me do is see how it doesn't make any sense. For example, they show the scene where Gal Gadot steals the egg from the back of the truck again, but it plays out completely differently to how it was shown back when it happened in the movie. If, in the original scene, we hadn't seen The Rock looking for and not finding a hiding Bishop, this would work, but we have, so not only was there no setup at that point, there was a direct contradiction to the twist. Another example is the escape from the prison. Why would the guards be shooting at them if they're supposed to escape, especially with a missile, that they only avoid in a super risky way that the Bishops couldn't even have planned ahead because Ryan Reynolds' character came up with it? And so on and so forth. If a twist leaves you feeling like the movie didn't cleverly deceive you, but actually lied to you and made up random bullshit just so it can say "haha, plot wist!", it is not a good twist.

The problem with your argument is that Dwayne's character was doing his best to confuse and deceive Ryan's character. Ryan's character is also excellent at his job, and astute, so Dwayne would need to be convincing. It was all an act from the beginning, and a great actor doesn't break character. Now, was it a bit convoluted? Most assuredly. These characters live convoluted lives, so I suppose it tracks.

I think that Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot have fallen into the "blockbuster" phases of their careers, namely where they take roles that "play it safe." Even Tom Cruise, Leo DiCaprio and Gary Oldman had this phase. Maybe, one day soon, The Rock, Deadpool and Wonder Woman will start taking chances on more serious films or something award-worthy, but there's nothing wrong with big paychecks. Or give a flashback/dream sequence as he describes this life he longs for...later reveal it was made up. Or even just show a scene that makes it *seem* like the character has a certain life but it was just coincidence and appeared that way to the audience but wasn't so.

Actually I like this. I grew up on this actor culture. For example you wouldn't care what the movie is about you would just say: hey a new Mel Gibson movie is out - and we would all know what are we getting in for. I think the 00s ruined that with special effects and ensemble casts but I for one am glad that the concept of a movie star is coming back.

It doesn't copy the style of Michael Bay. His movies are bigger. Both in character (especially in some of his better, earlier works like The Rock) and in action sequences. I'd say it is more in line with, say, Black Widow. Just move from action sequence to action sequence. And then let that cast of stars, mostly the charm of Reynolds and the Rock, make it work.

The video "Red Notice Pitch Meeting" (the creator is named Ryan) pointed out that Gal and Dwayne's character didn't even need to do... any of this. They could have simply followed Ryan Reynolds character to the bunker to find/get the egg.

I can only assume that 90% of the budget was spent on the big names they had in this. Everything else in it seems like some basic cable tv movie that blends in with all the other meh movies. Maybe the real heist was Universal selling this to Netflix.

Thank you. Someone needed to say it. I have been able to watch up to 30 minutes and that too ONLY because I love the three lead actors to death. I had no idea what exactly happened but one thing is for sure: I do not want to finish watching this movie. I adore a good heist movie, some of my favourites being 'The Entrapment', Oceans franchise including 'Ocean's 8', 'The Score', 'Italian Job' and 'Now You See Me'. I was seriously expecting something at that level. But it failed to deliver spectacularly.
