Sabermetrics insists some long-held traditional competencies can just get kicked to the curb. Can't (and shouldn't) be wasting time with things that management doesn't track and value. And as a result, this is what it happens.

And in football, a ball carrier losing a touchdown because he dropped the ball too early.

Fundamentals in general are in decline across many professional sports. Coaching is the problem. From when these players are young, coaches everywhere aren't teaching the importance of it anymore.

The dumbing down of America is even affecting sports.

To me the worst part was the pose/strut the batter did, I think he's the reason the guy on 2nd assumed it was a HR.

@golfmaniac007 he has been very good the first half but our skipper has abused him with too many innings and it is catching up to him. He probably has had more high leverage innings than our closer. If there was a fire to put out, he got the call thanks to being the only guy with decent swing and miss out of the pen. He is huge for us and the trade worked out well. Our GM got some arms at the deadline and they are trying to protect him more. But the Boston outing has been typical of his performance of late. I don't blame him though. The workload has been too high.

@@michaelchung1526 Zero reason to think the workload is too high. Yes he's among the league leaders in games and relief innings, but MANY relievers are in the same range. Reliever stats are heavily influenced by having bad games, since they pitch so little compared to starters. Swanson had one really bad outing not long ago which rocketed his ERA up. But in the 5 games since then, he's still pitched at the same rate, and has been very good. You can claim that one game was because he was overworked, but you have nothing other than speculation to support it.

@@puckerings If you look at his appearances, he's pitched a lot "3 games in 4 nights" and his innings now already near totals from last year. He has looked more shaky at times lately, and you can argue whether or not it's due to fatigue. Also, I find Schneider warms up pitchers a lot and then that guy ends up not come into the game which may factor too. However, he has been our go-to high leverage guy the whole year. Having Hicks will help a lot. (Let's not talk about the offense.)

Simply put, and correct. Fine the guy 1 year's salary and send him to 'stupid' prison.

Javier Baez of the Tigers did the same thing in a game earlier this season. It was early in the game though and afterwards,Mgr AJ Hinch pulled him from the game and sat him.

Usually it's the Jays making base running mistakes. They are bad on the pads.

To be honest with you ThunderPants, i never even seen little leaguers make mistakes like that....Little Leaguers are well disciplined kids that knows the game well...the only mistakes i mostly see little leaguers make is getting caught between bases when a line drive is hit

None of that matters. If he thought it was a home run he can stand where he was and do his victory lap at his leisure

The 3rd base coach isn't even looking at the runner on 2nd. He's got his eyes on the runner on 1st and he's signaling to him to round 2nd so he can get to 3rd or score. He's in the runner on 2nd's way as he's rounding 3rd.

Close. He's signaling for the runner on 1st to round 2nd so he can get to 3rd or score. He doesn't even look at the runner on 2nd. He's actually in his way as he's rounding 3rd. The runner on 2nd has to cut inward after he rounds 3rd.

@@Ciscoman4444 He meant the distance from home to the wall is short. In most stadiums if you hit the ball off the left field wall you will get a double AND someone on second will be able to score pretty easily. Plenty of times in Boston players hit the ball off the green monster and it's just a long single and also lots of times a runner on second can only make it to third and won't be able to score on the base hit. That's what he was talking about when he said "short". Not the height of the wall but the distance of the wall from home plate.

I kind of agree with the third base coach comment. The whole point of having a third base coach is to provide signals to the runners. If the signals aren’t clear or are just the wrong call you aren’t doing your job. That said, when you raise your hand in celebration and start jogging you aren’t really doing your job as a base runner either. Bush league all around.

Mistakes happen whenever you let your emotions control your thought process. 🤣

@@heystarfish100 Yep, I agree. But still, it's so amazing because it's such a "little league" mistake and these guys have played a lot of baseball! Mental mistakes in the "heat of the moment" pale to these crazy glitches haha.

Yeah, it's a stupid play, but think of it this way... you are regular player- not a pitcher or backup- and that means you are going to be out on the field as close to 162 games a year as your body will let you. There are at least 27 outs your side is going to make on defense... figure the pitcher strikes out 9 batters, that means that there are going to be at least 18 fielding plays per game (if the other team can hit .250 there will be at least 27 fielding plays, and probably an average of 2 fielders are involved in every play- some plays will have more, some less, but let's ballpark it there.) You'll come up to bat 3-4 times a game minimum, face several pitches, reach base on average one of those times, which means you'll spend some time as runner... Start multiplying all of those things together in your head... now multiply it by the number of years the player is in the league. You may be elite enough to get to the big leagues, but given enough chances, everyone will mess up. The worst, of course, are the ones at the end of the game that clearly lost your team the game, followed by ones like this that may or may not have cost your team the game but certainly ended your team's chance to win the game, and mental errors are the worst kind, but everyone is going to cost their team a game at some point if they get enough chances. You hope nobody notices. If you do, you figure out how you screwed up and work to make sure it doesn't happen again... but it happens.

That’s what we were all taught. I’m 60 and still remember what to do to avoid being thrown out. Embarrassing for a MLB player to brain fart on basic running strategy

The first priority is to not get doubled off, scoring is secondary. The runner has to give himself the best chance to score at the same time with basically no chance of getting doubled off. Even if you are going to make the case that the runner needs to increase his odds of scoring by also increasing his odds of getting doubled off, there is no reason for the runner to pass third base. He doesn't need to go that far and give up any chance of getting back.

, Yes, if you have someone play the ball really well off the wall (Yaz, Rice) catching it off the wall in the air or barehanding on one bounce.. a lot of guys have to stop at third, but you can't round third until you see it hit the wall. Is it possible the runner lost the ball off the bat and is playing by the hitter and third base coach reactions?

If you look closer at the 3rd base coach, his hands and arms are pointing back at 2nd base, He's telling the runner to go back.

At that location I think there is a shorter wall in front. It's been years since I went to Fenway but the infamous "Green Monster" doesn't wrap the whole outfield, it's a tall wall behind a shorter wall just in left field.

A high fly ball hit like that is an automatic out in most other ballparks. In Fenway if a high fly ball is coming almost straight down the difference of a few feet closer to or farther away from home plate will make a big difference. If that ball was hit just a few feet deeper then it goes into the seats up on top of the wall for a home run. But a little shallower and it's off the wall and a lot shallower it comes down the face of the wall and gets caught. The runner didn't have enough depth perception to determine if it was home run or if the ball was still in play, so he got fooled and ran when he should have tagged up.

@@kendallevans4079The wall (the Monster) is at its shortest at the left field line itself- only 300’-, and also the prevailing wind is also usually from the west here which will carry balls out toward center slightly more. The more a ball is hit down the left field line the more it becomes effected by a crosswind than a tailwind, while the more it is to center and the bullpen then it’s more of a tailwind carrying it. But that’s only with a westerly wind, which is most of the time but not always. The home run that is hit down the left field line with a southwest wind is the one requiring the least effort by the batter…at Fenway…

But the third base coach is supposed to be directing the runner. It’s his only job. And this was the most important time to do that. Granted, the base running was pitiful but made worse by poor base coaching.

The problem with a high fly ball hit like that in Fenway is the runner's depth perception. If the ball is hit a little deeper it's a home run, a little shallower it's off the wall and a little more shallow it's caught. For a runner it can be really difficult to tell what happened. Did it go into the seats, did it bounce off the wall or did the fielder catch it? In left field at Fenway it can be difficult to tell. From second base that ball might have looked like a home run, except it wasn't.
