My biggest takeaway got MUTED 😭😭😭😭😭. But it was, "sometimes the internet is good." Lol...when you get to that point in the video, you'll know what I mean. Also, me endorsing Reesa's success is not me saying I want to put myself back in the hotseat lol. She was blessed! But I know my limits. Anyway, thanks for watching :)

Do you think she sees it this way? That the internet was nice to her? Because I imagine she has been Uber focused on the haters as well.
@hellostephco84
@hellostephco84 7 месяцев назад
@@kandacewalker848 I don’t think she has… when I see her responses, she seems at peace. This is compared to other creators who make response videos crying, cursing people out, or taking down their content (I see that a lot on TikTok and I’m guilty of some of that as well). Also, it’s easier to focus more on the positive when you’ve got major brands in your dm’s, free trips loading, and an entire platform acknowledging that you broke the algorithm, expectations, and did something that may never be done again. Hate happens, but as long as the love is louder that’s what matters. When exposing your low moments to strangers you gotta wonder, “what will the pay off be?” If it’s worth it to you, and brings you closer to your goals, keep going. My goals were, more professional opportunities, community with like minded creators, and financial gain. Telling my business did not earn me that, so it wasn’t worth it in the end, at least not the way I did it. Again, it’s easy not to focus on the hate as much, when you are accomplishing your goals and getting what you hoped for.

I think that’s what drew me in, everything made complete sense - I could see myself as her going through that situation and I was rooting for a triumphant outcome. Also, I got the feeling that she learned so much about herself and where we are as a society in terms of dating, it didn’t seem like she would ever be in a situation like that again.

Not to be a downer: the internet (and people by extension) love a good underdog story and a good tragic backstory, BUT they don't like to see you stay down and also don't like to see you rise too high (especially women). It's just one of those things. That being said, I personally have always loved your storytelling and relate to a lot of them! I was astounded cause I would’ve needed to take a couple of days. Also, the ex husband speaking and the stepson. And she got a happy ending where she’s going to London??? As a Digital Strategist, the first thing I noticed was her ACCOUNTABILITY.. that is what brought the masses..
@hellostephco84
@hellostephco84 6 месяцев назад
You know…I would agree. But as a storyteller, as someone who walked that line, I believe there’s more to it. When I told stories where (in my mind) I took accountability by prefacing the actions within said stories as being the direct affect of a previous experience I was still dealing with, and I acknowledged that I made mistakes, and was relaying my story as not just entertainment, but as a lesson, not just something I was proud of, but something I learned from, I was still insulted, and criticized. So I have to disagree. It’s not just accountability, you have to be liked too. Audiences will not like you if they feel you consistently acted out of your best interest, if your mistake was avoidable, or if they feel you are an embarrassment to yourself and others like you. And let’s be clear, ReesaTeesa received that feedback as well, she did not escape that criticism. What brought the masses, were several other factors. For example, the packaging of her experience in a digestible series. The fact that there were no major movie releases the weekend her story was put up so people had time and were looking for entertainment. And finally, the clear, calm sound of her voice and the eerily specific attention to detail. She came across as objective and rational which made her easier to listen to. I’ve listened to a lot of analysis of her success and as someone who attempted a similar route and did not achieve the same success, these are the factors that stand out to me when it comes to why she had such a powerful impact. Taking Accountability is such a grey area because for it to count, the person on the other end has to want to give you grace. Without that, it doesn’t matter. I speak from experience. In the absence of that grace, your delivery, and your content will really decide your impact, and that’s what I saw with Reesa.

She also got a big payback very soon. The large platform, the trip offers. I think when we look at negativity we also have to consider the positive that came out of it. So it will be more of a surprise if people don’t have some sort of footprint, and between you and I, I don’t actually hate anything I’ve said or regret anything I’ve experienced, so if the record exists, let it be so! It’s proof that I lived and I was brave enough to do it publicly and when I ran into obstacles, I learned the necessary lessons, retreated and rebuilt. So I’m ok 😊

I think Reesa was really authentic- which was a huge part of her appeal. I mean she talked to us while driving, in her pjs, makeup, no makeup, etc. It really felt like a friend telling a story. Like others have said she also took a lot of accountability and like you said, her story was level 10 crazy. No one would expect their partner to be having one sided phone conversations and to fake bank documents. There were just elements no one could blame her for because they were batsh** insane. Honestly Stephanie you were one of the FIRST people I came across online that was doing storytime before it was storytime. You were a new creator just telling her story in no specific format with no specific goal in mind other than the sharing of a story…I say that to say…unfortunately now there is a formula to doing what you were already doing and people are finding out how to make it work to their benefit. Because you weren’t looking to benefit and the algorithm didn’t quite exist on how to tell the perfect story…you got the short end of the stick.

@hellostephco84
@hellostephco84 7 месяцев назад
@@noemita494 just fyi, I took down my videos bc people in them were being doxed, I was being harassed and responded to negatively by my “peers” (fellow content creators online) and I noticed that when I had my most viral content, it did not bring millions of followers nor did it bring creative opportunities en masse. You know why? Well, for the reasons I outlined here that made Reesa successful. The majority of people who saw my content did not like or trust me as a narrator (this is based on a simple analytical observation on my views vs overall subscribers which is something I refer to in this video). Next, I was not respected due to the sheer amount of unfortunate situations I shared and I was seen as someone who never took proper accountability bc of that no matter how many times I stated “this is why I did this” when ppl don’t respect you, they do not care lol. Finally, I didn’t like people looking at me and associating me with a brand that was built on a foundation of chaos. I didn’t want to be known as a “messy” woman who couldn’t figure her life out. VERY draining and unsustainable in the long run. In the end, after all of that exposure I did of my personal life, the pay off was simply not there. What you call self sabotage, I call redefining how to exist online on my own terms without the stress and added pressure of being “vulnerable” for little to no professional or creative gain. If my experience had been different, I’d have made different choices, that’s for sure! But it wasn’t, so I didn’t. Self sabotage no, self preservation….absolutely.

ACCOUNTABILITY is KEY. Reesa accepted responsibility for her part in the story. She understood and admitted to her "desperation" as well as the reason for it. Moreover, at the end, she shared what she learned from the experience that may cause her to do things differently in the future.

@@acceptinglife6491 yes. Also we should investigate what accountability to strangers on the internet means. People should take responsibility for their choices and be accountable to themselves and those they’ve harmed. But why do the collective we feel some kind of way when they don’t show accountability for people they don’t know.
@hellostephco84
@hellostephco84 7 месяцев назад
@@acceptinglife6491 This!!! But, if I could take a guess, I’d say it had to do with how they felt about previous things I shared. We didn’t know Reesa before this and this is our only story we have about her so far. I came on the internet with a “sob story” (pretty privilege) then went on to tell story, after story, after story of my nightmare dating life lol. In people’s minds, the only way it would make sense for this much trouble to be in someone’s life would be for me to be the root cause of all of it otherwise none of these things would have happened bc bad things never happen to good people especially so often, right? Wrong! Lol. But that’s how the internet thinks. People function better when they can put you in a clear dichotomy. Good vs bad, villain vs victim, there is no shade of grey and no nuance especially when it comes to trying to understand someone else’s consistent misfortune. And so, I believe my accountability was glossed over by the sheer volume of stories I had to tell. I lost the audience’s trust as a reliable and therefore valuable narrator, so they lost empathy for me as a storyteller and titled my explanations for my behavior and my acknowledgment that I understood I’d made more poor choices as banal excuses, and subsequently labeled me a self saboteur extraordinaire thereby canceling out any accountability I might try and take. How can you trust the reasoning of a person you don’t respect? I see this a lot with tv characters specifically reality tv. If the person is respected, people say “well they know they made a mistake so it’s ok.” If not? “Stop making excuses!” And my favorite phenomena is the unacceptable apology. If someone is disliked, any apology is deemed ineffective and substandard, but if someone is liked, they may never have to say a thing. It comes down to respect, and in the end, I faced a harder time, bc many people who heard my stories decided early on that they could not respect me and that’s hard to come back from. If I could take a guess, that’s what I’d say anyway lol.

I normally like your analysis but I feel like you’re taking it too deep because you wish people would show you compassion. Her story was abnormally dramatic and there were 13000 parts. TikTok hit the heat button and then other creators wanted clout so they started offering her stuff. TT is not a good gauge of things. In fact, it’s the worst gauge cos most of the content is garbage. 😂😂 that people don’t give your stories grace. But you have to understand that your videos typically involve trying to make broader social points that trigger people. Esp triggers black women who want to “prove” we are all pretty and happy and valuable. Reese had no larger point, she’s just told her story. I don’t know why you think people truly care about this lady. They think she’s pathetic.

Reesa Teesa’s goal of sharing her story was clear and consistent throughout the fifty parts: “If this story helps just one person…” She was also prepared with the response to her story and had a plan! She still had a lot of detractors but she acknowledged that she made mistakes and the way she owned them were refreshing. Even though a lot of people have never experienced a Legion to that degree, they recognised how easy it was to get caught up especially when you’re faced with someone presenting as if they could meet all of your desires! The next part of her journey is a healing one…..if she came out with another crazy story about a Legion v2, people would be turned off.

Her story was sucessful because she is really talented in storytelling. Just because someone has a story doesnt mean their delivery in telling the story is good. She went straight in with all of the good story grammer elements like a good book, she didnt give us too much explanation or backtracking, and her vocal and face emotions/presentation matched the tone of the story making us feel it with her. She wasnt attempting to sway the listeners opinion with podcasty commentary, she was just delivering the facts and her experince.

I completely missed Reesa's story but now I'm seeing recaps. I went sort of viral once from an article I wrote about a woman's right to choose and geesh it was almost enough to keep me off of Beyonce's internet lol. It's still why I haven't really gotten serious about TT or RU-vid. I admire women like Reesa who have the stomach for it. To Steph, I hate that you had those tough experiences going viral. You didn't deserve that but I'm glad you're still making content on your terms!

Its not worth it. Just dont do it. Being vulnerable is only admirable if you have compassion, and empathy for human beings. If you are a predator which is a large percentage of the population, it is just cause for more bullying and abuse. Your vulnerabilty will and and can be used against you by the wrong people.
@nolabelz

I first got wind of Reesa's saga through another RU-vid creator (Real Talk with Yanie). There were some things which definitely stood out to me. For one, there were certain characteristics of Legion that reminded me of my ex-husband (the pathological lying, the gaslighting, playing the victim, and even the unsanitary substance in bottles -- although that was due to my ex-husband being an obsessive gamer not an injury). I also noticed that Reesa kept mentioned that this occurred during the time of the 'demic. This could have given some additional grace in a situation where she would have garnered more heat and more scrutiny. The beginning of that period garnered a lot of uncertainty and prompted people to do things they believed they had plenty of time to do (date, get married, get into situationships, adopt animals due to feeling lonely, etc.) at an accelerated rate. I understand and I do get it. It mirrored that people can be selective what the grace one will hand out and what amount of vulnerability one is willing to accept based on time frame, accountability of the person, the way the story is being conveyed, and relatability. Reesa was very relatable, and when you were doing your stories, the way you told your stories spoke to me and echoed some of the feelings I felt in the dating space, which is what made me subscribe to you. I don't agree with the exposure of Legion, simply because Reesa didn't reveal his name. If she had, that would have been different, but like others have pointed out, it has taken the focus off of Reesa and now we are in the weeds of the side tangents (re: Legion, the stepson, the ex-wife, etc.). It was part of Reesa's healing process, and I hope that her story serves as a benefit to others but that she can get the insight that she needs to move on. I really miss your stories, but I understand the impact they had on you. I honestly believe you were truly ahead of the curve and ahead of the time. Maybe it's the writer in me but I always appreciate a good story time, no matter how long it is. Thank you for sharing a different perspective that was not a reaction video. Take care.

I don't even know the story in question (I think I saw it pass by on another RU-vid channel), but I agree with what you said. I think people seem to care more about events if there was a clear environmental or outside antagonist. If it's left up to whether or not it was "just your perception," people do not care. To me, that's been one of the hard things about depression, depressive modes, low self esteem, etc.; if your brain perceives things negatively, people will see that as your own personal human failing. So I know how you feel about sharing things. I literally just had someone tell me I need to stop rehashing the same past events, especially when they didn't see them as extreme enough to rehash. Now I am guarded. To me, it seems people truly don't care unless you are bleeding out on the front lawn. Which is weird because people also scream "mental health is so important," especially in response to someone hurting themselves. Idk, I'm rambling lol. Thanks for the video : )

The person is correct you should tell a therapist because then you’re just trauma dumping on the people around you and that’s not fair.
@diandriasmith889
@diandriasmith889 7 месяцев назад
@@Morenita570 Yes, I considered that. The only thing is that therapy is not easy to obtain sometimes. There are long wait-lists nowadays. Some aren't very affordable. Also, when I was in college, I spoke to a free therapist (a therapist in training). That was a terrible experience as she was just as annoyed as everyone else; I'm sure she thought I was trauma dumping as well. But I'm sure it's because she was unprepared. It's just sad when you don't have the right mindset to fit in with other people. They only tolerate constant unbridled happiness, unless you live in a war-torn or extremely impoverished country or you face extreme physical abuse. Then people give you leeway. Otherwise, you're just whining. So this year I'm trying to work on just processing things alone. It's not been going well, but it's only February.

@@diandriasmith889 my heart goes out to you. I can relate to what you say. Nowadays people think you should basically share anything vulnerable only with therapists when that's not accessible for most nor necessarily best. Therapists are people and many are not even fully prepared for that career path. People have forgotten about community and how important it is. Extreme individualism and positive vibes only mindsets are making people lose touch with their own humanity and everyone else's.
@Morenita570
@Morenita570 7 месяцев назад
@@diandriasmith889 since you’re out of Uni, you should try again with new eyes and with job insurance to continue looking until you find a therapist that works for you. Think of it like this if the people around you are not capable of giving you the bare minimum emotional support you need, you’re definitely not giving them any support at all being depressed. You’re asking others around you to give what you’re not capable of giving either and then getting upset at them. You have to be the change you wish to see in others.
@Morenita570
@Morenita570 7 месяцев назад
@@magicalgirl7903 that’s not what individualism is. You want to share trauma with those around you not capable of helping you in the way you need. And also you’re not helping them back at ALL in that trauma state and it becomes one side because they don’t have the tools to lead you out of the trauma. Family, relationships, friendships get stuck. Having an outside party sometimes helps and you can maintain your attachments to your family and community without needing to cut them off. Cutting people off because they’re incapable of healing your one own pain is individualism.

I actually found her story left me with more questions than answers. Like a less than $1000 3 bd room townhome in the greater Atlanta suburbs area? How was he able to pay bills? How did he hurt his leg? And if the leg was hurt to the point of debilitation, how was he able to still make enough money to support her? And weekend jail…. Lastly, if he came into the relationship, all of the WWE memorabilia, invicta watches, cars and clothes, why did she feel entitled to it. ESPECIALLY since he was paying all the bills and she never had to pay why did she feel the need to essentially leave him homeless without his things he has before he met her? She made no mention of him stealing from her or leaving her bankrupt… I thought that was questionable and I didn’t see the need to rid him of his worldly possessions because he lied to you. Yes the levels of deception were insane and baffling but she played into his delusion by keeping going to those house showings and car dealers knowing damn well he wasn’t about to get anything. She kept checking on him when he was out the picture I simply don’t understand. Idk something’s weren’t clear.
