The People's Court

The plaintiff says the defendant is his ex-girlfriend. He’s suing her because he claims she owes him money for the engagement ring he bought her, which she refuses to return. The defendant says she moved in with the plaintiff not long after his wife of 35 years died. She claims the ring was a gift and wasn’t a proposal.

Unpopular opinion: she used him. She sought him out after his wife dies. She moves in. She took over his place and displaces him to another room on a futon. Accepts an engagement ring, "that's not an engagement ring." Ends the relationship. Stays for year and a half. Keeps the ring and sells it. He's a simp, but she definitely used him.

She's clearly a gold digger. I agree with the plaintiff that it was an engagement ring, but the fact that he "let her keep it" after they broke up (and I do believe the defendant on that), I think it was, in the end, a gift. The plaintiff didn't dispute her testimony about him and the jeweler trying to sell the ring for her and letting her keep the money (if their deal had gone through). They probably would have gotten their cut, too, had it sold. As for her selling it later for $800 because "the diamond was cracked," I don't believe that. I think she either still has it (it was a beautiful ring) or she got more $$ for it than she said.

There is something about people and prospective partners that prey on someone who recently becomes widowed. I know two men this happened to. Grief and loneliness is an easy target for a woman like the defendant. I am sure this wasn't her first rodeo trophy. I think as well, a man who has been with another person comfortably for 35 years is also like a fish out of water without being with with a loving woman, which is why he took her bait as quickly as he did.

I feel bad for the guy, but even in his own testimony, it sounds like he intended the ring to be a kind of suggestive gift/placeholder so that in the event they do decide they want to get married, she'd already have a ring; he even let her keep it when things went south/admitted he didn't want it back. It wasn't until he finally came to terms with the reality that they weren't getting back together that he decided he wanted the ring back.

The kind of man that says to an elderly friend: Len get up. Doesn't linger on words of romance. Doesn't go out to look for love when his wife is passed but doesn't refuse a mate who offers themselves to a relationship.. kinda lets things happen.. I bet he still visits his wife's grave and changes her flowers just as he goes through the messages with this hungry woman remembering the good times and regretting the bad. I bet he goes to Len's for a tea even though he'd rather a beer but Len can't do beer because of all the medication...

She didn't take advantage of him. They were old friends. The guy's wife of 35 years dies. He's now lonely and wants companionship. She calls and gives him condolences for his wife, they start chatting, rekindling a friendship. 3 months later they start dating, falling in love. They move in together, he buys the lady a ring as a gift because he wants to show her that he loves her. After 6 months, they start arguing everyday, things are not good. They break up. He tells her to keep the ring. How did she take advantage of him? If anything they used each other. Simple. It's messed up that women blame women. It takes 2 to tango, blame the gentleman as well.

Well hopefully he learned a valuable lesson... not from the verdict but from the whole situation. You can’t rush into love, especially when you’re emotionally unstable. Take time to grieve and to redefine yourself in the absence of your loved one. It would’ve been better to just cultivate a friendship for support and move to romance after processing his loss and getting to know the lady better platonically.

My aunt passed away a few years ago of cancer. Within a month of her passing, my uncle proposed to three different women! Needless to say, he got rid of all of the family photos, including pictures of my cousin (his son), got brand new furniture, and is collecting my aunt's pension as she was a school teacher, all while married to the third woman he proposed to. It's just sad!

That reminds me of Dog the Bounty Hunter proposing to that lady on tv just after his wife died 😬 🤦🏼‍♀️ So awkward and sad. Some men of a certain era need a woman to take care of them. When we were kids my mother used to get sick a lot and my father was useless without her. We’d go to school with dirty wrinkled uniforms and inedible lunches, I’d have a ponytail on the side of my head and we ate dry fried ground beef for dinner every night. He would have done the same thing if he lost her.
