This is what I do with them boogerd up hulls that are cracking around the mouth or shredded from steel shot. Cut em down and load em up.. Great video Tyler, thanks.
I came through many of your videos to see shorties and a hand drill used to roll crimp.👍 you're creating a shotgun nut out of me. Been a bench rest shooter for a long time, and change is fun. Thank you again.
I'm not sure how I've missed this video but I'm glad it popped up. BPI never seems to have the roll crimper in stock and all i have is a one pin crimper and a clamp on crimper. The former does a terrible job and the desk top will only go down to 2 1/4". I ordered that Amazon one, thanks. Iput an extension on my 612 and my 870 so I'd really like to fill em up with shorties. I've had a bear hanging around lately getting into everything and last night we came face to face. He's not huge but 300lbs of bear is still pretty tough and he's getting so he doesn't even mind getting shot at.
@@theshotgunscientists oh yeah. I'm loading Svarog Botflys with the fins removed(they got damaged so I filed em down) and 00. It's raining all day today so I'll be at it after breakfast.
Also, the wad in the factory Federal looks like a TPS35mm... I use those wads with both nontoxic and lead upland game loads in 2-3/4"... The TPS wads pattern well in anything I load. They're magical. Maybe I'll make up a few minies and post them on the B&S page. Keith
@@theshotgunscientists I made a video on the TPS white lightning wad for steel shot. I should make some more videos doing different things... I'm a lazy bugger 😆
I have a KSG that runs mini shells great, but Ammo selection is pretty dull. I want to start reloading shotgun shells just for this reason! I hear the load-all 2 is a good place to start learning, but I'm pretty sure it isn't capable of doing mini shells! So this video was awesome!
@@thomasbaker9787 You can resize and reprime with the press but the hulls are way to short to crimp. Get a reloaders network 12 gauge roll crimp tool and use a hand drill! The press will do 2 3/4” and 3” shells no problem and will do 3.5” if you punch the primer out by hand with long nail and hammer. You need to buy a second resize ring to resize the 3.5” shells. It’ll do 2.5” shells if you trim off 1/4” of the final crimp tube. Basically it’ll load every 12 gauge shell length 2.5” and up if you buy a second ring and trim off 1/4” of the final crimp tube. Highly versatile.
@@theshotgunscientists sounds like a plan... believe it or not my wife is more into this than I am... she keeps watching the news and says.... have you bought ammo this payday... 😆
That 15 pellets of 4 buck and such a light charge would get you a pretty low intensity load I'm guessing. But it looks great for economy and improved capacity.
Thanks for the video. Question-- With the continued shortage of smokeless reloading powders (and they are getting insanely expensive), can you reload these using black powder, Pyrodex or Triple 7? I'm sure it can be done because BP and BP substitutes have lower pressure, but you may need to put a thin wool felt wad in between the powder and plastic wad cup to keep the plastic from melting onto the barrel when fired. I think this would be an awesome video to make. Thanks! John
Thanks, professor. You answered some pressing questions so I'm back on track. Q: I note you dropped buffer on top of shot. Do you do anything further to mix it with the shot load or what comes next? Otherwise, I really appreciate your video.
Wow that was really cool! I love these minis, but I'm thinking #4 buck is a little weak. Have you tried these 12 ga minis with #1 Buck? My buddy sent me this link and I just now subscribed. I've watched 4 vids so far and must say, your very knowledgeable.
There is nothing weak about #4 shot. Strength would be reasonably measured in the powder. Like dude said, residential over-penetration is a concern. Watch #4 in action... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rhZf_x8Esms.html
Thx for the video, i think i just got hooked on reloading minis from watching you……i have the once fired hulls…..I’m going to do your formula for the 15 pellets, but when you answered a question about a slug, you said to use a cut down TPS wad….. how much of a cut? An do you modify the bottom of it? How about powder, would you change it? Have you found other powder loads? In case I can’t find green dot…..thanks so much in advance
@@galipan6213 I’d personally use a Cheddite 209, 14 to 16 of green dot, x12x, 1/4” felt, a nitro card, 1 ounce foster slug and roll crimp. Ideally 1200 fps. You might have to mess around with charge and stack height.
I wish Federal would make a regular 6pellet 00buck minishell instead of the "Force X2" load..if I have to sacrifice pellet count, I dont want to sacrifice penetration as well.
@@theshotgunscientists ...I know this is probably dumb but, can you make .45lc brass into mini .410s? I know you can with .303 after annealing them. (Not a .45lc but an actual .410, unless the data is close)
Awesome..! I have the most fun with mini shells in my Mossberg Shockwave. Question.. Do you ever skip the crimp and glue in an over shot card? I find its an easy way to use 3 inch data in 2 3/4 hulls. Thanks for the video...
The original federals used a 209a primer with 12 grains of green dot. If you use a standard cheddite cx2000 etc could you bump up the powder charge to 13 grains?
@@theshotgunscientists I havn't got any tps wads. Was gonna copy you and cut off the shot cup from the green ssw/gualandi h-12 wad and use 13 - 13.5 grains. I shot a bunch of my home made loads yesterday. Shot and cycled flawlessly. Cheers for all the info/help man
@@theshotgunscientists I actually found that the cut off shotcups from a gualandi v zero 25 or a-21 fit 6 x 00 buck the best. And I went with a standard cx2000 and 12.5-6 grains of green dot
@@theshotgunscientists sounds interesting. Just don't know how to measure that in. I'm guessing keeping the payload same weight? Thanks for your videos brother! You rock
Hopefully you still see these, I want to get into loading these short shells.. curious, have any data you could share with what I have, cheddite 209, longshot and some of those X12X Symmetrical Gas Seals, curious about the powder.. cant quite find anything for 1 - 3/4 shells
@@theshotgunscientists I'll have to look up what the fiber wads are. I saw a video of a dude loading 00bk. He said like 29g, 9 00bk pellets, the x12x and a single bingo chip. He loaded and fired em so that's why I'm confused a bit
@@matthewcote151 you can do that yeah. Longshot is slow burning magnum powder, it can have problems working with lighter loads unless you want high velocity. Normal speed/fast powders like red dot, clays, 700x, and green dot work better for mini shells because you can use far less powder and get normal speeds with normal payloads. Watch the video I did called 9 pellet 00 for beginners I explain it in better detail.
@@theshotgunscientists Nice. I've reloaded for rifle and pistol cartridges for over 40 years but never shotshells. Got my OPSol 2.0 and can't find much ammo so planning to roll my own.
@@majormike1688 I’ll do a video on that soon. Reloading for shotguns is actually really simple. Simple enough to the point of not even needing a press.
@@theshotgunscientistsThis fact & not needing a press to roll crimp might get me to start loading. Still checking into 12ga hand loading tools at the moment.
