Today we revisit the Remington Nitro Turkey 3.5" shells and pattern them at 40 yards from the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag through an Indian Creek .675 choke. Will they perform any better than the previous test? Stick around and find out!
You can send stuff to the channel! (please no handloaded or reloaded ammo, factory ammo is fine *DO NOT SEND AMMO VIA USPS! USE UPS OR FEDEX ONLY*)

Remington nitro turkey loads are all in just regular target load style wads, whereas other brands have moved to full length wads more geared towards steel shot or tss loads. All of the shot is inside the wad vs 60% of being outside the wad in these Remingtons. Full length wads are generally thicker, they open slower, and produce far better patterns.

Interesting to hear. So far, it looks like it definitely makes a difference

For this gun and choke combo what would you recommend in a lead load if you can’t find any Winchester longbeards?

It's hard to beat the LB shells, but the Double X shells aren't bad. They definitely aren't the same as the LB shells, but will give you a capable 40 yards pattern and are pretty easy to find. Salt Creek also makes great lead shells, but I think you have to contact them with a custom order to get them. Their customer service is great though, so it wouldn't be a big ordeal

@@matttyreeoutdoors awesome thanks for the reply I’m using a mossberg 835 with a .675 Indian creek and it loves the #6 longbeards but they’re not easy to find in my area at the moment

The bigger bore on mossberg 835 has must be having a effect on the pattern????,,,,,, Try a mossberg 500 or 535

I would definitely test these in another gun, but as for right now the 835 is my only setup with a 3.5" chamber. Eventually I'm sure I will get other setups to run them through, but in the mean time I'm looking for the 3" version of these shells to test. From what I have heard and seen before though, I don't have the highest of hopes for the Remington shells in general

I’ve killed a dozen or so birds with Remington Nitro #5s - 3 1/2”. 40 yards and in. All shot through a Winchester 1300 with a .660 Carlsons. Never had a bird run off. I’m not trying to sway anyone one way or the other, but just my experience.

@@matttyreeoutdoors There’s definitely better options, but I do know that before the TSS came out as the standard, the old Supreme Xs, Federal HW and Nitros killed them by the hundreds. Choking those #6s and #5s very tight just seemed to be the best recipe for us is what I meant most by it. Hope you had a great season bubba

@Rockin’ L Outfitters I have some of the old Supreme and Double X shells in 4s, 5s, and 6s, I just haven't decided on what setup I want to test them through since I don't have very many. I killed my first bird with a 12 gauge Winchester Supreme load of 6s and they will definitely put a bird down

I wasn’t really impressed with even the LBXR in my 835/935 at the .675 and more open level chokes. .655 and .665 was better to me.

The Longbeard 6s did ok in my 835 with the Indian creek .675, but I have definitely seen better from them. I haven't tested the 5s yet, so we will just have to see what they can do

Anyone I know who has used Remington Nitro loads have learned (these loads suck) the hard way. I can recall countless times where birds have run off that should have dropped dead. The last thing to cheap out on is the round you put in your shotgun. I have never seen a serious turkey hunter stick with these rounds, but they do keep selling them.. If you need to save money, buy a $200 Stevens 301 single shot. Skimp on the gun, but not the turkey load! If you are just starting out, I would suggest the following - Affordable load starts with Winchester Double XX (4, 5, or 6 shot). Spend a little extra for the Winchester Long Beard XR in the same shot sizes if you can. I would put the Hevi-13 rounds at the next level, but they are being phased out (except for the Magnum Blend loads). For years, Hevi-shot offered $10/box rebates for these Hevi-13 rounds during the spring. If you are planning to shoot a 20 gauge or smaller, I would consider TSS turkey loads. Overall, I think the hype of TSS loads is a bit over done. I do, however, believe TSS has made 20 gauges as effective as 12 gauges shooting copper plated lead loads. No one would have considered a .410 for turkeys prior to TSS. In some states, using a .410 wasn't even legal. TSS has changed that! If you want to use more affordable copper plated lead (like the Winchester loads), I wouldn't sell your 12 gauge. If you're just starting out & are willing to pay the price for TSS loads, a 20 gauge is a great choice. My 5 turkey load choices based on what's been shared on this channel & personal experience would be (in order of lowest to best) the Winchester Double XX, Winchester Long Beard XR, Hevi-Shot Hevi-13, Herter's TSS turkey loads, and Apex TSS turkey loads. For their price, Federal, Remington, Browing, and some of the other TSS loads don't impress me. If I am spending that much, I would get the Apex rounds. Some of the other more custom rounds, I don't have enough experience to have an opinion on.
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors Год назад
Yeah I can agree with that. I've never had any issues out of the Longbeard shells and have used the old double x shells a few times to great effect as well. In fact, I took my first bird with an old Winchester Extended Range 3 inch #6 load. If it's a lead load, I'm going with Longbeards. Tss loads are superior in a number of ways, but they come at a cost which isn't always necessary, especially in 12 gauge

Do you think it is mostly the wad Remington uses that creates that wide of a shot pattern? Will the 'used' wad present any evidence that could be useful in diagnosing shell+choke+shotgun performance issues?
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors Год назад
The wad they use looks just the same as most other wads, just a different color plastic. I've looked at them after the shot and nothing jumps out at me to make me think the wad is a big issue. I really don't know why they pattern so much worse than others to be honest
@driftlesshunter9200
@driftlesshunter9200 Год назад
The lead pellets deform easily, & they fly all over the place. That's why copper plated lead is better. You could have the best choke ever made, & you would be better off shooting something else in my opinion.

Remington uses a standard target load wad in their turkey loads. The Rhee brands have moved to fell length wads which pattern much better.

I've used Remington Nitro 3" 6 shot with a 660 constriction Primos Tightwad choke tube out of a Remington 11-87 and have repeatedly success dropping turkeys dead with one shot. Some seasons I go empty handed from not getting a shot. My longest was at 49yds which was my biggest bird at 25 1/2 lbs. I disagree with you Matt completely. It's the best shotshell at its price point.
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors Год назад
From what I have seen and heard, you are one of the rare cases that see good results from them. I have my eye out for the 3 inch versions as well as a tightwad, so we will see what they do if I get my hands on them

@@matttyreeoutdoors Thanks for your reply and for being willing to try what I use. I purchased two boxes around 17 years ago. Copper plated and buffered shot has performed well. Only once I had several pellets to pick out of the breast meat. The 49 yd shot was because I thought the turkey was closer because of its size. I stepped off the distance where it laid. The Remington shells were produced well before the Winchester XR was manufactured. When you pattern your setup on paper your seeing where it hits and overall pattern. You then make necessary adjustments. Shooting a live bird in a hunting situation is a little different from shooting paper. You also try to pick the best shot a bird will offer you. No need for 3 1/2" shotshells. Your patterns were quite adequate with a miniscule adjustment. I see no sense in trashing Remington Nitro or Premier shells. They patterned better than any lead shot I tried including Winchester XX. The XR will likely outperform my Nitro shells but it's a newer technology and two to three times the price. I still use my Remington shells with confidence. No bird for me this season. I was only able to get out a few times and my grandson and son-in-law are hooked on turkey hunting. I've watched several of your videos and appreciate what you're trying to achieve but a little more information and information goes better than a bla bla bla senseless ripping on a quality product. Good luck Matt.

Hey Matt I saw a video bye "The Pennsylvania Hunter" on the Rem Nitro vs. Win XR that you might find interesting. Also the video was shorter and more informative. Hey Matt I wonder how tight of a choke constriction you can safely shoot turkey loads?
@matttyreeoutdoors
@matttyreeoutdoors Год назад
@Mark Katona when it comes to 12 gauge, I have heard of as tight as .645, but I typically draw the line at .655 personally. Especially for shooting tss loads. Most of the time when you get super tight like that, it actually just blows the pattern open because it's too tight of a constriction
@markkatona292
@markkatona292 Год назад
@@matttyreeoutdoors Interesting. I personally would not waste my money on tungsten shells and wouldn't want to bite down on a piece of turkey meat with tss shot. I'm sure it will break my teeth. The tighter constriction would be interesting on 2 3/4" 12ga loads. Thanks for your reply.
