I guess with iron shafts, you have less chance of ruining your club or shaft, but with a graphite shaft you need to be much more careful to not split the fibers at the tip.
Things to note for next time:
- use a vice clamp to hold the shaft down
- don't pull from the handle side, higher chance of twisting and splitting the fibres
- pull the tip/club head off as straight as you can (clearly why they use shaft pullers to do it!)
- I think that extra 30 seconds might have made things worse too, go slow and take your time
