I think this has been one of the most requested videos ever. I think if you spend any time at all repairing vehicles, you will eventually run into this problem. There are many different ways of dealing with it and I cover most of those in this video. The focus however, is on drilling and tapping out the broken fastener. Yes, there are other methods that are not demonstrated in this video, and I may make videos specifically on those methods at some point in the future. One method I forgot to mention was welding something onto the broken fastener so that you could turn it out. I meant to mention that, but forgot. For now, I think this will help you if you find yourself dealing with a broken fastener. I wish you luck no matter what method you choose.
Another option mentioned in the comments is left handed drill bits. They also have these with a special remover built into the bit. This is something I haven't used in the past and I don't currently own a set, but many have stated that it is another option for removing broken fasteners. There's a link below to these tools.

Use a left handed drill bit. Sometimes it spins whats left of the bolt out, as you drill your hole. Fastest way there is.

I love how honest these videos are. No cuts, no making it out to be easier than it is, no misrepresentation of the work involved. THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO, MAN.

If all else fails...helicoils will be your best friends. They are steel thread inserts that replace the original threads. The kits come with correct drill bits and tap. The correct size threads will be inserted into the bigger threaded hole. Then you are left with new steel threads in the correct original size. Steel threads are much stronger than aluminum threads.

I have a feeling that if you can get the piece the broken fastener is in out of the car, a drill press would be your best friend, but you can't always get the part out.

Left hand drill bits make your life so much easier. Even the heat from drilling may be enough to break the screw loose once you get deep enough.

There are drill bits that are threaded in the opposite direction and as they dig into the broken fastener they can unscrew it instead of driving it deeper.

Working on my truck I found a broken fastener left by a technician. Upset and impatient trying to finish my task I took a break for lunch and watched this video. It motivated me to go back out and patiently execute a repair. I tried the easiest method first and progressed to the hardest method. Managed to drill out the stud right down the center. The easy out did not work this time so I finished drilling and ran a tap through. Worked like a charm. I say all of that to say this: Rather than impatiently rush through and screw up a delicate procedure, I rested, ate, hydrated, enjoyed the video until in fine, I felt positive enough to do this. Thanks for taking the time, Eric

Look at all this time and efforts Eric spent on this. Then look at the thumbs down. People suck. Thank You Eric, You taught me a lot here.

Thanks so much for making this video! I've had my share of broken bolts over the years and I've never really been able to deal with them very well. But today I broke a bolt on my wife's car ( brake hose bracket to trailing arm ) and decided that I really needed to figure out how to not make a mess of these things. I found your video and it was one of the most helpful car repair videos I've ever seen. All of your tips were incredibly useful: stay calm, take your time, get a first small hole well centered, use good drill bits, and be gentle and let the tap find the threads. And it worked, got the hole cleaned out nicely! Couldn't have done it without you! Thanks again so much.

Did this last summer. My sister bought a 99 Accord with the 2.3L? I offered to save her some money and do plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters. There's 3 small fasteners that hold the distributor cap on. I grabbed 1/4" drive and started gently pulling out those fasteners. Half a turn into the top fastener it sheered off effortlessly. ...I spent 3-4 hours that afternoon drilling and tapping that very small fastener. It was "fun."

I've been watching your channel for over 7 years now and this video has done more for me than any one. I just wanted to drop some gratitude and say thank you for showing me the punch and hammer technique. Saved about a year of my life in stress alone. Not to mention the hours and money that it saved me. I have used all sorts of methods for removing a stuck bolt (the worst was 2 studs that broke off in an exhaust header flange..) But the punch and hammer is by far my go-to method now. I will post a separate comment to describe how I made this method work for 2 different stuck bolts. Thanks again Eric!!!

Great camera work, great explanation (without wasting our time with a bunch of blah-blah-blah), great personality... great video. I just broke 2 while replacing a valve cover gasket. I'm saving this one for future reference. Thanks Ericthecarguy.

Great video, I learned several things, #1 Start by being ready and prepared, such as sharp bits(very important), making sure your drill motor is turning in the correct position, yes you can use a left had bits as mentioned below but your drill motor needs to be turning left handed or right twist bits, motor needs to be turning right. Prepping the surface of the broken bolt, i.e. taking a correct sized bit and tamp down the high surfaces. #2 relax the gaulded body of the material that the bolt or stud is broken off with tapping the case surrounding the broken bolt with a few taps of a ball peen hammer. You may want to heat the surrounding area as well. When centering your center point punch lightly tap the punch until you are directly in the center of the broken bolt.
