Leo at Sampson Boat Company asked if I could help him by doing a repair to a broken casting off of a pipe threading machine that he purchased. We started by removing bronze bushings that slide on some rails and then brazing the broken casting back together.

Mr. Rucker, I cannot thank you enough for getting involved with this! First, there was a lot of talk on social media that the slop in the travel of this carriage was acceptable. I hope people can see from this video that it was not and it was more than just "play". When I took this piece apart, and it fell apart in my hand, and I saw just how thin those bushings were, this WAS excessive wear. This machine has DEFINITELY been used over time. While I'm sure Leo could have made it work, this repair will certainly streamline his manufacturing of the bolts he needs and help him tremendously. Also, on the two rails/rods, if you look on the end that doesn't have the threads, one has a hole, the other one should be marked with the letter F, for front. The front would be the piece you brazed back together. Thanks again! This community of makers never ceases to amaze me in its generosity.

Those bushings looked like drainage tubing you would find under the sink! That's a lot of wear.

@@marshallmoneymaker8322 You're so very welcome, Marshall. But those words weren't just kind: I'm in awe of you and people like you who do similar things. Straight from the heart. I lost my little sister to oral cancer. Less than 2 years from diagnosis to when she was gone. Seemed like a storm. I was reeling-- seriously. I lived with her and helped her teenage daughter through this. We do what we must, don't we? But you... you've gone a hundred steps further than I can. And you suffered three times what I did. One... three... nothing easy about such loss(es). I just don't have what you have. I don't hold myself in contempt for that, but I am in awe of you. Bless you... bless you a thousand times over.

Absolutely love the community that has bound together the best of the best on RU-vid. I was watching Leo, and a comment mentioned Project Binky. It is delightful. In on of their "Howie Do It" videos they were turning something on a lathe, and sparkes flew. The voice-over says, "I hope Abom isn't watching." They pinned Abom's "Oh I'm watching," comment. Abom79 is the first channel I became a patron on. This community spirit is lifting my soul up. It is so real and show the best in us. Marshall Moneymaker (comment below) is spending his life in service to others.

Keith , it may be worth mentioning to your viewers that anytime they are grinding or sanding paint off old iron , they should check for lead based paint , as it was commonly used on darn near everything back in the day . If the paint is lead based it’s best to remove it with paint stripper so the lead particles don’t become airborne and inhaled .

Replacing a _lot_ of the wood? He's replacing *_almost all_* of the wood! He's managed to repair most of the transom, adding a little bit of new wood to it, and isn't going to paint it so as to show just about the only original part of the Tally Ho. He wanted to use the original ballast keel, but sadly melted it in half trying to refurbish it with some more lead. I've been cheering him on since he went to Georgia to get some seasoned Live Oak for his frames 3 years ago. The young man definitely knows what he's doing and is basically building a new boat from the original plans. I can't wait to see him launch the boat and unfurl the rigging on it's "second maiden voyage". I'm liking and subbing to your channel for this favor that you're doing for him.

My father worked at a Phosphate mine in Florida, they used pumps to move the rock/clay/water slurry around the plant driven by 1,000 hp electric motors. The pumps were cast iron, in four parts, then machined and bolted together. Sometimes they would develop a crack in the volute, so they would take them apart re-bolt them to hold pieces in place. Then grind a v-groove on outside and inside of crack. With several people heating it with rosebuds they would braze the crack up with plenty of rod then put them back together and back in service. They would run just fine until the metal in the volute wore out completely.

Beautiful brazing job! I have repaired cast iron with brass for more years than I want to admit to. My last job of ten years involved repairing many large structural frame parts for carpet looms. I considered myself pretty darned good until one of my shop hands took me by the ear and showed me some stuff I didn't know. The best was not to grind out and leave sharp edges where you fill. They get hot too fast and burn up. Round off those spots and your heat will transfer a lot better. We used a bare rod with powdered flux in a can. Heat the rod, dip it in the powder, ready to go! The powdered flux is handy to pour a bit on your ground area while you are heating. Also you can flux the melted off end of your covered rod. We never used nickle arc rod to weld cast. Most of our looms were at least 100 years old and unfortunately all in the scrap now. The plant closed down and they were redundant and obsolete. We had a shop you would have loved. A Lodge and Shipley lathe 18 feet long with a 60 inch swing, 2 Gemco shapers, a Fay planer that had a 17 foot cut by 4 foot. A Monarch lathe that was made in 1942 and came from a battleship and a lot more. But alas it's all gone now, most of the machines from the shop survived by being split up between two other plants. There wasn t much we couldn't do. Good memories. Cheers!

Brazing by torch is an excellent way to repair cast iron damage, bronze is much more ductile than cast iron filler rod, and works well on high shock, low operational temp items like this part. If it was a black iron pot, I would have welded it. Nice to see machines being repaired properly. 👍🏼

i worked at a shop , and we did some casting repair . one tool that helped alot was an old refrigerator some what striped down, with a heating element inside. lined inside with insulating blanket. put all pieces to be welded or brazed in, warm up to about 500F . then weld. then back in to cool slow. you are doing agreat show, thank you!

Brazing is the tried and true method of repairing cast iron, I have worked Belgian made presses that were brazed back together before WW2 according to the oldest men in the Press Shop ! If it’s done right it stays done. I was taught to braze using a borax-water paste in the joint and big square rods of spelter , once it’s ready to run, it damn well runs !

Some people don't think brazing with a torch is strong....If it is done correctly, it is very strong.. Try to break a brazing rod and see how much effort it takes.. I learned the correct procedure almost 50 years ago and still think even with the modern methods that oxy acet brazing is a good method... Grind a nice bevel, keep oxides from the surface by limiting heat and using the proper flux .. I have brazed old machine parts for years with good results.. Cheers; Mike in Louisiana
@xenonram
@xenonram 4 года назад
The part of the braze that people doubt isn't the filler metal, it is the bond at the interface. (So the ability to break a filter rod doesn't really have anything to do with the strength of a braze.) Welds and brazes don't usually break the filler metal, but it breaks at the interface. I agree it's very strong, but that's what other people think.
@ramsay19481
@ramsay19481 4 года назад
@@xenonram The reason usually that brazing fails is because too much heat was used, prep was not correct, wrong or not enough flux, etc....I have brazed castings so large that two extra torches were needed to add extra heat but once you get the bronze flowing, the heat can be turned way down.. I have seen and made many mistakes over the years.....I made many before I learned to do it properly ....Fifty years ago....Cheers... Mike in Louisiana

Tip I learned in a Hot Rod magazine. Use the smoke wrench, then dab some wax on the hot part. The heat will wick the wax between the surfaces/threads. I disassembled an entire Olds Rocket 350 using this trick, and only broke one bolt. This part should have been put in an oven and heated, brazed then cooled in the oven slowly. Cherry red in one spot as the only heat source isn’t the ideal situation.
