We have seen mature, fruiting avocado trees in Arizona, but we have learned through experience that they can be very picky and demand a lot of attention. We feel like we have finally figured out what kind of soil composition and microclimate the avocado tree wants, and we want to share our experience with you!
This young avocado tree has been in the ground about 6 months, and started flowering a couple weeks ago! One thing we have learned about fruit trees is that you need to learn to be patient. This isn't always easy, and looking at flowers and imagining your first crop is an exciting feeling! But doing the best thing for the tree isn't always easy. Today, we are removing the flower buds so that our tree can focus on becoming big and strong. Hopefully, if we keep caring for it appropriately, this means that in about 2 years we will actually get our very own avocados! This is generally a good rule of thumb to follow for most fruiting plants.
Do you remove flowers from your fruit trees? If not, what has your experience been like? Let us know in the comments!
