Removing Forklift Battery Cells For Solar Power Part II

In part two of the video I am making some nice progress. I learned through trial and error what works and what does not. Now I am removing the forklift battery cells out of the case one at a time.
It is still a very hard and tiring job. These forklift battery cells weigh between 100 and 120 pounds each.
I have to connect the hoist to a battery and then crank up a little bit at a time. Then I hit the battery case with a hammer which frees up the forklift battery cell. The battery cell moves upward a tiny bit at a time with each hammer blow.
Once I got the first battery out of the case the next ones came out a bit easier. They are still packed in there pretty tight but the job is going much better.
I managed to get 10 out of 18 forklift battery cells out of the case.
I plan to use the individual forklift battery cells in my off grid solar tiny house to power the home. Forklift batteries when used in solar power applications last up to 20 years or more. This is because forklift batteries are built tough and made to take a lot of abuse. In home solar power applications a forklift battery is gently used and lasts a very long time when properly maintained.
I am hoping to get two good battery banks out of this large 2,000 pound 36 volt forklift battery. Two of the battery cells are bad and one is broken. That leaves me with 12 good cells for two battery banks and a few spares.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

Just looking at the size of these cell and the amount of acid they hold. You will need to make sure that your final installation location has the right spill control in case the cells leak. I know you do not want to risk contaminating the ground water and your stream. You should also check with NY state environmental and EPA to see if you have to have a spill plan to comply with regulations. Again power for your dwelling looking better. Be safe and good luck.

I’ve got (3) sets of (6) 2V forklift battery cells in series. I’ve been charging them with my standard 12v battery charger and have each of the 3 12v sets up to about 11.6v now after adding distilled water. What’s the best way now to tell how good these batteries still are?

what you should do is take one of those bad cells a part so you can see how much lead you have to work with when putting a rod in to the battery bank to put a nut and bolt on to it. I know battery's that have the bolt on top are just a bolt that is burred in the lead. witch you can do you can drill in to the lead that the head of a bolt will fit down in pretty deap and take some stainless steal to make a ring, aka mold put a round the post and melt some lead in to cover the bolt head I used stainless bolts if you can or melt the lead in a stainless steal pan so you can pour lead in to the mold. and let cool it should hold nice and tight. You can belt down the lead you cut off it should have tin in it. so the lead is stronger.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 9 лет назад
Now that is a very good idea. SS bolts melted into the battery terminal with the head inside.
@McCuneWindandSolar
@McCuneWindandSolar 9 лет назад
The Do It Yourself World thanks Yea I'm just thinking what would I do. and with the bad cells that is plenty to test stuff on so I know I would take one a part or pop the top to see what I have to work with. as for the Stainless Steal mold I was talking about I get one of those SS comadent things at wall mart. I have used those to melt lead and them port it to mold it ect works pretty good. and with the lead bars that are already on those they should have enough tin in them. I would melt the lead in SS pot and use a dipping spoon that has a sput at the end to pure the lead in to the mold and I heat the mold up to insure a good mod to the base lead. Wish I was there so I can see what you have to make this work. Now because of your video and you getting that for pretty much nothing I will have to start looking a round for Batteries. LOL.

I work in a battery shop and we regularly replace cells in batteries. To help get the cells out, we'll spray into the spaces between the cells with WD40, then run a cheap machete down into the space between. This helps lubricate of course, but also helps break up the corrosion that may have gotten between the cells. Also, if you have multiple cells to remove, try not to extract the corner cell first as they will have two sides with more corrosion due to the steel case.
@BudgetFPVRC
@BudgetFPVRC 9 лет назад
Troy, I think you should get a pulley and a cable and park under one of those trees and use the tree as a hoist with the cable to pull out the cells. That way you could raise it strait up and much higher to clear the battery case. Just an idea.
@ElectroPig

Just had a thought for that battery box once you're done with it...weld on a couple of louvered steel doors, bolt/weld it onto the front of the trailer frame, and you've got yourself a practically bulletproof propane tank vault, which is outside and automatically vented. I get the sneaking suspicion that it'd hold up well even under the occasional highway stone chip, as well. d;o)

You could have reset the strap near the bottom of the cell and used it like a noose to grip and lift the cell out. You could also shorten your loop and chain up. Also, put a 6x6 across the back of the bed and tilt it back 20 degrees or so to lower the back of the bed.

What that gray material between the cells is dried paste of baking soda and water that was use to neutralize the acid boil over during the time of use by previous owner. You could of use a rod thru the eye holes on the case to lift the thing off the pallet, to slide it to the rear of the box. You willed it to find a way to get it move tho. To bad you didn't have a drill bit large enough to waller out the solder in the post holes of the lead bars. You can still melt those connectors back together tho, to make your banks and scrap those doa cells for money. Hope you didn't stuff to much in your cavity of a stomach. May the sun shine on the panels and the wind blow the turbines to power the tiny sauna on wheels at the offgrid project.

Well once again working harder not smarter. you took them out and what did you do carry them over and put them right on the ground not on a cart of any kind now you have to pick them up again and move them. common troy your a smart man you should know after all this time how to make things easier. You putting them on the ground isn't good for the battery the 2nd time I have told you this if your going to man handle the cells at least put them on some plywood, anyway maybe you just don't read my post because im being negative but troy its not negative just commenting on things I am seeing and have seen in the past. Once again just trying to help you out a little. ill keep watching and commenting when I see a easier way and also commenting when I see you doing something very good. I understand your out there by your self which makes it very difficult. hope the time and energy is worth it on this battery project.

James really, you think im being that negative wow I would say a lot worse things if I was I was try to help the man out a little and as I posted before I understand he is one person which that make things 2 or 3 time hard. Yea maybe he is done with this project I would hope so because the time and effort and the coin used. Cut him a break well he is on UTUBE and I do enjoy watching him BUT I feel I should comment on stuff I see him doing wrong and im not being a huge troll about it just 5 minutes of my time to comment im sure he keeps up because he should as a utuber. I wish I lived close because I would visit him and maybe even ask if I could do the same thing right beside him then he would have help when needed.(pipe dream) anyway James don't think im being to hard on him just think of it being a report card from his fan. Enjoyed you call me out, have a good day
@lnwolf41

You have a good system going, though I would of shortened the strap after the first 2 were out. That would of given you a higher lift, maybe even over the case. Go buy a bunch of small tractor tires ($5) each; build small carts for each bank that you make. would make moving them so much easier. Oh; buy a hydrometer to check the batteries. Also, it might be better in the long run to buy a desulfator, even though the bedini is workable.
@RadicalRC
@RadicalRC 9 лет назад
Get two taps. One tap to start the threading. Break the tip or grind the top off the second tap. Use it to finish the threading. If you get 75% of a thread, it will be OK. The lead is soft and the bolt will roll-thread it in the rest of the way. You can also buy thin nuts and thin wall wrenches if there is 3/16" of a gap under the lead bar. If you heat those up enough to melt something, your also risking the plastic on the cell top. I'd avoid that nonsense.

With my recent experience with forklift batteries I would say that if you can afford L16 batteries then get them. If not, get Trojan golf cart batteries. The forklift batteries require a lot of maintenance and my batteries were used so they never did perform well.

just dril a hole in the terminal, threat it and put a tread rod piece in it, put a nut on it to make it fast, and use a second nut to connectyour wire lug, thats how we do it very often with used cels, works fine with the amount of power you wil use.doesnt have to be 2000 amps handeling, 300 is fine!

Troy, I am afraid this comment may be too late to be of use this time, but looking toward future projects, you should have the ability to adjust the hook closer to the boom by attaching the bolt to a different chain link. This will gain you several inches of lift. As well, it is also sometimes necessary to do this when using a hoist to pull an engine out of a some vans (or motorhomes) in order to gain enough clearance to lift the engine off the mounts without the top of the boom hitting the top of the cutout in the firewall (and just about everything else crammed in there).

Troy. The only reason I mentioned the spill plan is because of the volume of acid that could spill. I recall that one gallon is a reportable spill. It can seep into the ground and then into the water table. Now since you are showing us that you are working on these cells the videos might be seen by people in these regulatory organizations and come by for a visit. So if that did happen you would already have your ducks in a row and the visit would be informational and no actions taken. Yes you are correct. If the EPA starts enforces all regs they would be extremely busy and profitable. As an example when you change the oil in you vehicles how do you dispose of the old oil? You are legally required to take to s hazardous material disposal company for them to burn in a certified burner. If caught not doing this a fine is levied. Just please be careful. I do not want to see you go through another costing toilet crisis. Be safe and stay warm.

Glad you have made SAFE progress in getting those stubborn cells out of there. Is it odd, it takes so much energy to harness some of it to store for later, yet time and inefficiency always take it away before we can get the full benefit of the stored energy? How much time and fuel it took to get those cells to your site, now time and energy for tools and you to get them off your truck. How much the same we all face the everyday destruction of our labor efforts paid in stored value of fiat money that looses buying power for stored or active energy or the means to be off the grid. Ponder how many carbs you burned today! haha

They are quite a workout to deal with thats for sure. I could not get anything inside the hole to lift properly without damaging the battery. I tried a bunch of ideas. The manufacturer says to lift by the negative terminal

Troy. Please get a face shield. Goggles only protect eyes. Acid can burn skin and leave major scarring with other medical issues. I have seen this where I work. Not a pretty picture. You are no longer dealing with consumer equipment. You are now in the major leagues working with industrial equipment. Please do as I suggested earlier. Check the safety requirements on the material safety sheet for the acid. Best of luck.

Yes that is a very good point actually. I have worked with batteries my whole life and seen what they do to clothing. One single drop means a hole in your jeans.

well done, having said that must say I cringe every time I see batteries sitting on the ground or concrete, always heard either would kill batteries ?

The Do It Yourself World Cheat mode: Start cranking with the door open. That gets a little power moving to the interior lights...when you slam the door shut, the power that was going to the lights goes to the starter and she fires right up. d=^D Amazing the little tricks that SHOULDN'T POSSIBLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE that you learn after having the same car for 30 years... d;o)

Where I am from one never ever sets batteries on direct dirt or cement do negative draw from the batteries. always place a wood board or something non conductive between them. This from the old timers.

this is no longer applicable. it comes from back when the battery cases used to be made out of wood and tar. the plastic cases now are better insolating then any wood plank put under them. place the batteries on the concrete all you want, no harm will come of it

I know this is a stupid rhetorical question but why didn't you shorten the chain on the hoist? You have the means, we saw it on your last video. Plus; why did you not shorten the strap used to hook onto the cell? it was shortened by a knot tied in it. Why didn't you tie another knot? shorter?? why Troy? You could have lifted the cell out ENTIRELY with the lift and driven the truck away, then lower the cells into your little wagon.Until you begin to do things more efficiently please don't display your goof-ups, edit them out. Your bloody trolls do not need any more ammo. I'm grinnin like a cat eatin a canary over the monster battery you now have!! Rock on, lift smarter, Trust your gut,, and lift with your head. Don't end up a crip like me.

Lift it out and stop being a weakling. So much for your new coat you already ruined it by grabbing the battery, once it's washed it will be full of holes now.

Why wouldn't you wear an old coat when your handling corroded batteries? You are aware of what acid can do and yet you get your "new coat" arms all over the sides of the batteries where the acid has been dripping. I stretch my dollars as far as they can go and I change clothes if I'm picking up a simple car battery because I know how easy they are to ruin when exposed to acid. What's the deal? You don't save old clothes for dirty jobs? You don't have any old clothes because you don't really live there? You don't value you new clothes enough to change? You just didn't think about? I won't lie, watching a guy that is suppose to have limited funds and depends on the kindness of others for donations, this was hard to watch.

A good guess is that Troy keeps what he needs and passes on what he does not need. I suspect Troy's "old" coat is keeping someone who had no coat warm. That's how things are done on the po' end of town.
