In this video, we continue with the Aiwa recommission.
Today, we take a look at Cassette player motor repair. This Aiwa model uses a motor that has a built in controller. Amusingly, the motor controller is the only board in the whole deck that contains an Integrated Circuit!.
I start with checking for board for dry joints. I follow on with lubricating the motor shaft and cleaning the commutator. Off camera, I replace the two small value electrolytic caps on the controller board. I also strip down a far newer cassette deck motor, remove the brushes from that deck and mount them in front of the worn brushes in this motor. I solder the brushes to the existing brush copper. This gives the motor a far greater level of torque and prevents it from stopping and not restarting.
I will describe this method in a future video. It's not one I would endorse as an official fix, but, it seemed to work in this case despite being a bodge.
