My parents had two Toshibas. They both developed the same problem a black screen with a white line going down the middle of the screen. I thought I would never have a Toshiba but ended up buying a Toshiba window air conditioner.

Those secretly Orion TVs can last 30k plus hours before the little vertical cap needs replacing. To check hours, set the volume on the set to 0. After the indicator disappears, press and hold vol - on the set and while doing this, press and hold ch 6 on the remote. Info should appear and it will give you a 4 character hexadecimal value which represents the hours. In most city areas, they are among the Sony and JVC models which actually sell for a decent chunk of change due to the variety of video inputs, picture quality and the fact that many likely weren't used as much as most 80s-90s models.

In 2002 I bought a new 20 inch BRONKSONIC color set with built in DVD and VHS players. Been used alot, no issues, everything works fine, still has a very nice picture.

I didn't even know there were CRT sets with built-in digital tuners. In some cases you can access the menu by pressing volume up and down together.

Nice seeing Bryan in a video once again (14:33). Your vids are always good at reminding me not to pick up any TV's left at the side of the road. The few I have seen are usually bashed in the back where the pix tube neck was anyhow. That radio was certainly packed badly. Not surprised the cabinet got damaged. At least the pieces were glueable and you put it back together.

I guess that it was you holding an old camera at 14:33 where he was reflecting on the TV screen in daylight.

I avoid curb-side "hard refuse" CRT TV's because most of them have the screen smashed to pieces and the yoke is missing.

At first, I was thinking that the Toshiba was a knockoff of a 27-in Panasonic TAU, but once the set was opened - it quickly became apparent that this was a horse of a different color. I'll tell you one thing, those TAU's are built like an Abrams Tank; they're also easy to service thanks to their component layout, and ease of access to most of the components positioned under the CRT and close to the front of the set. Have a great (upcoming) holiday season, and take care!

Years ago, I worked on one of those Panasonic sets and it was indeed well-built, and I'd take one of those over a Sony from the same time period. All that was wrong with the set was a blown fuse.

That Zenith AA5 would make a good starter set for someone looking to get into tube radio repair. No wax-paper buzz-bombs to go off, and only the filter cap. The other good thing is that it’s fairly simple and flat; some AA5 sets have a really deep chassis with components and wiring on several levels, and - better yet - no dial cord to worry about. 😊

I have that same type radio but mint in color. The case is in very good shape. I payed $15 for it at an antique store. After a recap and new cord, all is well. I play it everyday in my office. Thank you for posting.👍

One of the biggest thing's that bother's me nowaday's is forced technology. a couple of month's ago my cable company phoned me and told me they were no longer supporting the older cable boxes we had . they sent round a technician who replaced our cable boxes the one in our living room was fine it's a 13 year old flatscreen and has hdmi input however my older tv in the basement only has s video ,cable and rca input's. I had to go out and buy an adapter to convert the hdmi signal to rca out just so i could use the tv on cable. It just makes me so mad when i have to throw something away because i can't get part's . I prefer to keep the older stuff working and in good order mainly because it was made way better back in the day and more reliable for the most part. It's so sad that it's a throwaway society nowaday's and stuff made today is just crap.

It's just a way to try and force people into constantly having to buy new crap from China.

Maybe the TV was discarded because they lost the remote. Under a couch cushion somewhere. Some day these CRT TVs will become collector's items, curiosities, antiques from a bygone era and with real money. That is hos the cycle of antiques works.

By the 2010’s CRT’s were replaced by LCD and LED HDTV’s. The CRT sets were suitable for video game consoles like NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Atari 2600.

I remember that GE used a similar arrangement, with the circuit on a square plate behind the front controls.....of course, the difference being that Zenith used a hand-wired metal plate, while GE used a cheap printed circuit board. I had one of these radios---for a simple, low-cost set it wasn't bad. Sounded better than the aforementioned GE, that's for sure

That's cool that America had digital tuners built in they're later CRTs. I don't think there were any built in digital tuners in our CRT in Europe, at least I've never seen one.

Yes Bryan, it does suck about the Zenith radio, but since it was a more common, low end set, it was no great loss, that it got damaged like that. What I, and a lot of other people, are wondering about, is what looks like a vintage Disney kiddie record player we see around 22:26 . Do you plan to do a video about that? I didn't know Piggly Wiggly was still around. Our Piggly Wiggly stores closed back in the early 80s.

Whenever I want to reuse the strain relieves on any cord, I would just cut into it lengthwise with a razor blade or sharp knife in the direction of the broken cord, peal it apart from the cord, and fit it onto the new cord with some cyanoacrylate glue.

I got a couple of Orion built sets. One is an Orion 13" TV from 1998 and it works fine. The other is 19" Broksonic from 2002 and I got it with original remote. However nether of them are as good as my 1983 RCA which still works very well.

A BPC Magnavox i picked up months ago has an Orion A48JLL40X40 in it. Still works ok and it's 28 years old now. And a 1986 portable GE radio/tv OEM'd by Orion when they were made in Korea, the tube has mild burn in.

Orion may have been bargain basement at the time but compared to the like of HiSense and Vestel they were superbly engineered. The worst of the Japanese-engineered stuff (Orion was Japanese) was still better than the best Chinese or Turkish-engineered stuff of today (note not just assembled, as in designed there by Chinese companies). People are mad to spend thousands on crap from the like of TCL or TPV (Philips).

I hate it too when a remote control is required to make things do basic functions and settings. If you don't have the correct remote, you are SOL. Universal remotes do not usually cover all settings and features. Oh, give me the days of adjustment knobs. Especially volume controls .

Man this guy right here sits here orders all this old shit off eBay and then he gets it and always has some type of complaint. I mean seriously when you order something that old you can't expect it to come in immaculate condition. He sits there and wastes the money he inherited on this old crap. This is an old man stuck in the past that needs to get with the times.

I think he's more on track than that. He does what he loves. Many eBay sellers are sincere. There are plenty of scammers on there though. Shipping packaging is a huge problem and it's frustrating when I as the buyer have paid substantial money for shipping and possibly the item as well. I like to say that it's my item not theirs. They should pack it like it's not theirs, but their customers. I hope Bryan can find something along the lines of his interests to help him pay the bills. Bryan, check with electronics companies and see if they have piecework that you can do. It may pay well enough as you develop proficiency doing the tasks. Good luck and God Bless!

These late 60’s radios were made of polystyrene case, and it’s fragile and it easily breaks. Just like they did with 1940’s and 1950’s radios that had a bakelite case.

@@ChrisTombstone82I got my Bugs Bunny AM radio off of eBay a few weeks ago and I had no problem with it. No chipping or breaking, and all I did is fixing the tuner string and it works great, and I cut out the wires from the headphone Jack since it’s too small to fit, and I rewired the speaker from the circuit board and it works perfectly, and now I can pick up AM stations from somewhere. It also a mix input to connect to a Bluetooth adapter and it will play music on iPhone, iPad or other devices, and the volume doesn’t turn up or down, so I used the button to turn up or down the volume instead of the knob, and it should do the job.
@radiotvphononut

@@ChrisTombstone82 No, I don't expect it to be in perfect condition. However, I expect it to be packed correctly and received in the same condition in which it was advertised, and I don't think that is too much to ask for.

I had the blue and white version of that tube Zenith radio. I got it from my grandmother's estate after she passed on when I was 11 or so. It was her kitchen radio. Sadly, when a tube blew in it I threw it out being young and stupid back then.

ATSC needs an outdoor antenna even in the city. ATSC 3.0 made the signal more robust, but they're stuck in license disputes and encryption that requires an Internet connection. OTA TV is required on the off chance that your cable dies. People look at this Internet encryption crap and are shaking their heads. It's DOA, and it may never get off the ground. If people have to use an Internet connection to watch TV, they'd rather just stream it off the Internet rather that fumble with outdoor antennas and crap, and you know they'll want to to pay for TV on top of that. It's so stupid.

I can remember the first time I ever went into a store by myself. Probably around 1975 as a 6 year old. I bought a can of yoohoo and a pretzel for like 15 or 20 cents. This was in a corner store, not a discount place. In my area, today, that same yoohoo would be close to 3 Dollars with 8% sales tax and 2c per oz "soda tax" and the pretzel would be at least a buck fifty! This was only 6 years after 1969 and only 3 years after Nixon reneged on the national debt and took the US off the gold standard.

Richard Milhouse Nixon was the absolute effing worst president this country has ever produced. Crooked to the bone. Started the stealing from social security. And of course you have Watergate. And he's the one that started HMOs with Kaiser Permanente. Got him on tape boasting about that. And he was the dumbass that open trade with China. If I could dig him up and kick him in the ass I would do it and then have everybody United States have a crack at him.

A thousand times I prefer these devices but not exactly the generic ones, the black ones are boring to see these are painted and look better, I have seen televisions thrown in the street of 33 inch CRT tube and once I saw a 40 inch that I arrived late because they had broken it very recently they gave me a Hokutone brand television licensed by Telefunken Tenog that recap it completely has blue capacitors
