Thank you for showing how to work on these. I have this one in my garage. Saved it from the dump. Going to fix mine after watching all your videos on it. Someone painted mine I wish it look original like yours does.

You can repaint them but it's a lot of work stenciling them out. What we usually do if they've been repainted is just make them two tone, paint the body one color and the head another and be done with it.

19:51.... Maybe I am wrong, but i believe those flashbulbs had little bimetallic strips in them that broke contact when they got hot.... then they cooled down, made contact again and switched the light back on, which made them hot again.... etc.

Wd40 is dielectric so it does not make electricity flow, but it will make bad connections and will make it arc. Also bad for plastics and nylon

Oh, I know this machine. A PC field technician, yet the owner claims it works worse each time I work on it.

I got a Williams Olympic hockey. The lights come on when plugged in. Is that normal or should I need to hit left flipper? I’m thinking I have a closed coil maybe? Also my score motor just runs then I hit start button and blows a fuse. Just got the game and I need to figure out what cleaner to use on all the switches then the playfield of course. First em game for me and I’m just happy it’s complete but it’s pretty dirty. As far as the fuse blowing I’m assuming a short somewhere

Good morning, I was wondering how many hours you put into a game like this? As a business your on out to make money. I see your price and its cheap for what you had to do. Obviously I don't know what you had into the game originaly. I see you have a pinbot a couple machines down. Is out for sale what's its status? Been looking for a nice one. Ended up buying a jackpot it just doesn't have the feel of pinbot..I played the heck out of pinbot back in the day.. Thanks again for the videos Much appreciated Bryan

Thanks for watching Bryan! I just finished an E.M. today, truth be told it probably took 14 hours or so total so we're not getting rich on the pinball machines but we like working on the. We typically just buy them if we get them really cheap, and not working so there's at least some margin in them for us. Usually most of the machines though take more than 14 hours. The Pinbot is coming up soon, I think it will be pretty nice.... the solid state ones are a little more, that particular one has a pretty nice playfield on it (it had mylar) and we're going to put new displays in it. We'll probably film a video when we work through it....

Would these go to "sleep" on their own or is that left flipper to power on only after the master power switch has been turned on?

Yes it's just after you turn it on for the first time, it will sit there dark until you put a coin in it or hit the left flipper switch. Not sure why they did it like that but I am sure that they had a good reason (they always did!).

So I'm just curious... Assuming that the collective heat from the regular bulbs over time is what causes the deterioration of some of the plastic components (may also hasten the deterioration of some of the rubber rings), as well as the paint on the back glass, do you recommend replacing the lighting in older machines like this one with LEDs? The arguments for include (but may not be limited to) lower energy consumption, cooler operation, and having to replace them less frequently. I'm wondering what the arguments against might be.

There's only two arguments 'against' putting LED's in one, 1, they cost more (not too much more though) and 2, they don't look like they belong on an EM machine. It changes the way the machine looks... so it's kind of like putting nice chrome billet rims on a 57 Chevy. They're better in every way than the original rims but they don't look right. As for the heat, the original bulbs were #44 bulbs, and were on all day in locations for a couple years during the initial life of the machine. Most people replace those #44 bulbs with slightly dimmer, and much cooler, #47 bulbs. When you consider the heat that you lose by using the #47 bulbs, plus the fact that the game isn't going to be turned on all day for the next two years in someone's house the benefits of using LED's are reduced to "you don't have to change them as often". Some people do put LED's in them though, just depends on personal preference.

Fair enough... :-) I'm personally an advocate of LED lighting in general, but I also understand the differences in the overall 'look' of an LED bulb versus a standard incandescent (Intensity, instant on/off versus rapid ramp up/ramp down... That sort of thing). Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that there have been some advances recently that allow the LED bulbs to more closely mimic the behavior of a standard incandescent bulb (but I imagine at a higher per unit cost). I absolutely agree that it's a matter of personal preference (Were I in a position to own an older EM pinball machine, I would at the very least consider replacing the harder to reach playfield bulbs with LEDs, but that's just me...:-) ). Might you consider at some point in the future, doing a video demonstrating some of the differences in lighting options? (I had no idea about the #44 versus the #47).

Yes I might do a video on that down the road, but it's such a touchy subject it might just start a bunch of fights, lol. The good news is, since they're all in sockets they can be swapped one way or the other depending on what the owner prefers so ultimately it's not that big of a deal. There are some that look a little more like an incandescent, yes.
