When we get rusty gas tanks like that we fill them with white vinegar and let them sit for 2 days, the white vinegar dissolves the rust, then we empty the vinegar out and flush the tank with a solution of water and baking soda to neutralize the acid from the vinegar. Works excellent.

This is a much better method than filling the tank to tank with stones. I would have half filled the tank with water then added some muriatic acid to the water and shake in it all up of course after sealing all the outlets. It would clean that tank in about 20 minutes and then you could flush it out with fresh water and then rinse it with some acetone.

Enjoyable as always. For the tank, Matt at diesel creek drops a chain inside and straps it to the wheel of his tractor. Does a great job. Glad you're off the walking crutch. Getting better every day. You impress me by the work you take on. As we used to say, keep on keepin' on.

Another thing that works well is to dump in a bunch of nuts and bolts, wrap it up with and old towel or blanket and tumble it for a while in the clothes dryer with the heat turned off.

Just go to Walmart and get a few gallons of white vinegar, pour it in the tank and let it sit for 2 days, it will totally dissolve the rust, then empty out the vinegar and rinse the tank with a solution of water and baking soda and it will neutralize the acid from the vinegar so you don't get flash rusting. After that just fill will gasoline and add Marvel Mystery Oil, the Marvel will prevent any further rusting by keeping the inside of the tank coated with oil.

i use evaporust fluid inside the tanks, fill half way then flip over to do the otherside, once the rust is gone i then use POR15 Fuel Car / Bike (Motorcycle) Tank Repair Sealer... really good for tanks like the one you have. slosh it around inside for 5 minutes enpty it out then let it dry... i first used it on a small metal mower tank and it impressed me so i did it again on a few of our machines that were showing rust signs.

Hey Sam. For derusting the gas tank I use some sharp, and self cutting "Spax" wood zzzzzzzzzscrews and then strap it to a cement mixer or a tractor tire and let it turn for a while. That is definitely less exhausting than your method, just as a hint for next time. "Nach Fest Kommt Ab!" we say in Germany Sorry for the Schadenfreude, I knew it before it happened. I had to break these die cast aluminium pieces several times myself! Tom 😎

Hello! Random internet dude here to tell you all the things you are doing wrong and how I would do them better! Love to see young folks fixing things like I can't do anymore! I suspect there are many more, just not on the lightly blues. Tinkering dad to the rescue! When you broke the cut off valve, I was thinking JB Weld. I'm glad that you didn't listen to me.

Next time you come across this situation Sam , they make a kit to remove rust from metal gas tanks. I used it on a Honda ATV I had bought in the 80's , it's a two part system, one solution to remove the rust , which as you did shake it around the whole tank let it sit overnight and then pour that out , second part it's an liquid epoxy that coats the tank which you turn the tank all around to cover the inside completely , let it set for a day and it's like new. That tank is still like new to this day,

Well, folks have suggested vinegar and evaporust for the internal tank cleaning, which probably would have been less laboursome. But with rocks bolts etc. physical rust removing, it might be handyer if you have a cement mixer or or other rolling/shaking device to which to attach the tank to. Anyway, great to see a lady being so handy with engines a mecanical stuff - Rock on 🤘😊👍

When you were scraping the gasket at ~31.30....a trick to keep things inside clean is to wad up a paper towel and stuff down in there before you start scraping. That way, when done you just pull out the towel and all the scrapings come out with it.

Well done. You sure gave yourself a good upper body workout cleaning out that fuel tank. I hope that that paint is really resistant to gas, else that will peel after a while. It seems like talking to one's self is a family trait! To reduce the sidewats movement of the load, take the strap around one of the vertical frame pipes, then continue to the other side.

I tried vinegar and acid in the past, the problem I had was after the cleaning the tank rusts inside even faster. If I was to do it again I would fill it with water and pour some iron out in it, and a day later put rocks in and shake it. I put iron out in my toilet bowl tanks and it is amazing at turning rust into black stuff that suspends in the water leaving the tank spotless.
