This digging bucket off of a Terramite backhoe came to use with at least half a dozen cracks in it. A classic farmers fix grinding out and welding the cracks.
My Dad passed away when I was 20, and he was only 47. Seeing video's like this, make me remember the things we did together, but seriously sad, for all the things we never got to do. I'm old now, and wish there'd been youtube and cameras to look back on, with him. Thanks for the glimpse into your life!
I feel the same way. My dad died at 49 and I was 21. It was 10 years ago. How many things I would have loved to do with him. When I come across a video on youtube of someone working with their dad, I remember what it was like working with mine.

I had a friend who was a lifelong welder, the tips he gave me were really good. Any crack he would drill a small hole at the end of the inward crack and then dress and weld it. It did appear to stop the cracking process. Good post, practical teaching is so much better than from a book or video, as you can ask questions. Thanks for posting 👍
I get alot of welding jobs where someone welded over a crack. They come right back. Your doing it right grinding it out completely and if I heard right using 7018 rod for welding the cracks. Right rod for that job.
Like your Dad, Sam, mine was many talented. He was mechanic, carpenter, welder , mason,logger,hunter and landscaper and even though self-taught could match any one with years of courses in these trades. Your dad is a perfectionist just like mine. It’s made working on projects with him difficult over the years but I’ve learned a lot and wouldn’t have it any other way.
as a ex steel worker and bank vault builder, what your dad is teaching is spot on. When assembling slabs of 2 inch steel, it was all V notched and used a Lincoln Wire welder or Arc 5/16ths rod at 220. Great job your doing and satisfying to watch!! on the bow...you can run a bead on the opposite side and let the heat draw it down.

you and your dad did a real good job repairing that bucket. one thing i saw that you left out and is the reason why the metal cracks, weld is very brittle and the way to fix that is to anneal the weld after welding. what i use to do was weld up metal drills and when i didn't anneal the weld, the weld snapped every time. all i did was after welding, take a torch and put the weld or put the torch on the weld until it reaches red hot glow, then let the weld air cool, no water, no oil quenching, after that, the weld becomes like normal metal, malleable again instead of being very stiff and brittle.

Cool that your dad is a handy guy (I'm assuming it's your dad) and you guys do all sorts of projects together. You're gonna remember this stuff when you're older.
Your dad knows where it's at . I'd work welding with my older brother the pro welder on bush welding jobs and I'd want to do it to death shooting for perfection. He'd tell me " Relax a bit , we're not building a piano here." In some cases " good enough " really is good enough.

Your parents have built a lovely home setting. Noticed your dad washing louver windows which are my favorite. Adjustable windows seem to work better than those which are either open or closed at 180 degrees. Your project looked fun and rewarding. And well done! 👍👍👍
I was told to drill a hole at the end of a crack to stop it spreading further before welding it back up. Looking good though. Probably beats the "ol' take a chain saw to it" approach, though less fun. Great precison hammering on your dad's part. "On to the next one."

Your Dad seems to be a great explainer. In the beginning he showed and explained what needed to be done. Then he went back to whatever he was doing. I thought you were going to weld it, but to my surprise Dad lit the sticks. You and he had several conversations on how to salvage/repair the bucket. Great Job from both parties.
Welding is a pretty amazing art if you think about it. No matter how badly something metal is cracked or broken, you can theoretically repair it using welding. It may get to the point where it's not worth the effort, but the possibility of a repair still exists. Not many other disciplines where you can say that.
Don't let comments bother you. Everybody and their 2cents. Grew up on farm, never threw much away because you may need it to fix whatever. There's always a more expensive way to do things. SEEing somebody do something anymore is refreshing.
It’s a time consuming job repairing a bucket that’s been abused. The guys who run the equipment need to get the job done so the bucket suffers. They either work the bucket to death or repair them themselves. You are lucky to get jobs like this to do. I subscribed today I enjoyed the video.
It’s a buckets job to get abused, and not uncommon for them to break way cheaper to do a repair like this than buy a new one. The bucket will get a lot more digging out of it with this repair and make much more money
You remind me of my relationship with my dad. He told me what to do, I did it and did more so so he didn't come back and didn't want more. Happy that im not the only one ❤️
You shoulda bugged him for practice time. Bucket repairs are great for novice welders- aesthetics aren't critical, and it's nice heavy material, so you're less likely to burn through.

RU-vid...the place where everyone is a master carpenter, or depending on the day, a welder at a nuclear power plant...and yet, your Dad managed to get nothing but compliments. That's impressive:).
Procedure is to drill a hole at the end of a crack, this stops any further spreading of the crack. Then select the correct settings for the thickness that needs welding. You need good penitration into the metal. You may need to make more then one pass. Pre-heat the metal to dispell any dampness and to make the weld part more mallable to infuze the weld rod or wire.
Once again, an interesting video. I really enjoy how you lower the sound and add musical accompaniment once the prolonged grinding, welding, or pounding commence. Your musical choices today included more country oriented selections. Those were during the time your dad was the main character on screen. I was wondering if that selection was because that was more to his musical tastes. Glad to see cameos of Lena at 9:45 and 13:50 among others. To paraphrase a quote from the movie "Field Of Dreams", "if you video it, we will watch it".

Very good job! Sam’s dad is a really skilled welder! He run with a hand like with the other one. He welded in all positions and made a good job! The only thing that I wish to suggest is that after putting down the first root pass you could increase the amperage of the welding machine in order to run a hot pass over the root one to make sure that everything is melted together ;)
Great video! Just went on a bit of a deep dive as I didn't know what the tool was called that your Dad was using to remove the slag. After some searching and reading, I learned that it is called a "Needle Slag Tool" or "Pneumatic Rust Remover Tool" - pretty cool!! (I've never welded in my life, but have huge respect for those that do.)
The third most important step in order to fix a crack beside cleaning and grinding a v into the crack is to drill a hole at the ends of the cracks. This prevent is from cracking further. Don't forget a few bang with a hammer after the welds as well.. This helps align the crystals in the metal a bit better.

Great, day, friend, one thing we should know that everything in life has its day, useful, even for an iron or steel, which last 20 years, after that they start to fall apart, that was what I noticed with the loosening already carried out previously, needing, in addition to redoing the loose, to put an extra reinforcement; but it's good to be recovered
