Grease-able Spindle Replacements: amzn.to/2lcwxah
Deck Belt: amzn.to/2XW3cUh
You can replace the deck spindles on your Husqvarna YTH22V46 Lawn Tractor and save time and money by doing it yourself - DIY. You'll have to remove the mower deck from the tractor first, then remove the existing spindles and replace with the new spindles. There is a link below to the spindles I purchased for my tractor. Thanks for watching!
Here is a video where I show how to get much longer life out of your new spindles: • The Truth About Mower ...

Hello Dennis, Four years ago your video rescued my YTH22V46. Could not have done it without you. The other day, being overzealous I struck a hidden stump leaving me with a need for another round of spindle repair. My memory is not the greatest, but I did remember my old friend Dennis and once again your video has walked me through the DIY process, saving me hundreds of dollars. Thank you and God Bless.

Dennis - Thank you so much for this video. I joke around with my friends that if it has a keyboard, I can fix it - if it takes gasoline, I'm worthless. You gave me the confidence to tackle this job and we were able to mow our lawn today after I replaced the cracked spindle (I even broke some bolts too). I'm grateful to you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge with us.

Just want to give a big thank you for making this video and making it simple to understand. Went ahead and put on new pulleys also as long as it was torn apart already and saved a lot of money rather than taking it in to the local dealer. Again thanks for all the great videos for a greenhorn like myself. We need more people like you doing this. Don S. Great U.P. of Mich.

Hello Dennis. Just want to say "thanks" for this video. I recently replaced the "rapid release" spindles and blades on my Husky mower deck with regular star spindles and blades. I must say I watched the video several times to make sure I didn't miss anything. I bought an aftermarket spindle, pre-threaded and with grease zerks. Also took the time to clean up the deck, and take care of a little surface rust. Thanks again!

Great video. I took off a spindle I thought was damaged. It wasn't. But because I broke 2 heads off, I had to try to remove the broken bolts. Not easy. I drilled them out and used bolts and nuts. But never again unless I have a new spindle ready as you did.

Thanks so much for your videos. you are easy to follow, you explain everything and for a guy like me, its important. I'm not good at all with working on anything with an engine. So I have the same tractor you have in this video which helped. I changed the spindles with very little problems. one thing I'm not sure about is the amount of grease I put in the spindles. you explained the tells on when it's full but I still couldn't tell. next time I'm gonna use a lock n lube coupler because with the grease gun I had it was hard for me to keep it on the zerk and pump the handle. grease squirting out around the zerk, what a mess but I got it done. at least I think its full. Anyway, you made it an easier process for me because of the way you explained it all. thanks again. Oh, I never thought I could remove and replace the deck without major problems but I did it.... very cool.

Thank you for watching! It takes quite a lot of grease to fill these spindle housings. Once you see grease come out of the weep hole, or the upper bearing, it's full.

I love your vids tysm! Am 63 first riding mower ever husqvarna. Had it 5 yrs now only service help has been ur vids. Not exact same model. If a part breaks it’s a no brainer. I’d like to also know for some vids “ you might have to do this repair because...” like the spindle vid n a reply you said they got noisy hit stumps was about 100 hrs. Average mowing last longer likely. That kind of info really really helps me work on my mower. Local dealer is a rip off and pricey duh. You have saved me agggravation worry stress time & money. I am ok with repairs but with your guidance never afraid to do so! Plus the maintenance how tos super help for me esp change oil. Why do I have tons of junk always building up under deck? I keep it clean Is it a husky thing? Never mow wet grass. Don’t let it get too long. Been this way since day 1. On my model there’s a worthless wash out port. Do not use. Manually clean under deck. Again tons of thanks from an widow loving my first riding mower!!!!

Thank you for watching, Maggie! I'm so glad these vids have helped and I really appreciate your support! I think all mowers are bad about accumulating gunk under the deck. I believe it is form the moisture inherently in the grass...even when it is dry out. I'll usually take my deck out once a year and scrape out all the junk, clean and paint any rusted areas etc.

My Craftsman lawn tractor made by Husqvarna with 42 inch deck uses the same spindles, my son hit a tree root some how and cracked the spindle also the pulley on top spun stripping out all the teeth, had to replace spindle, pulley and blades. The teeth in the pulley are the weakest link and can start spinning on the shaft so it needs to be checked when the spindle is replaced. Your videos are helpful because of the similarities since my Craftsman lawn tractor was made by Husqvarna.

Hey Dennis. Just wanted you to know that I successflly replaced both (10 year old) spindles and both drive and deck belts yesterday with the help of your videos BUT.....I found a better way to crank off the eight spindle bolts! I see where you reached under each spindle pulley and then struggled to break loose each bolt as most of the bolt heads snap off anyway. Here is my suggestion: REMOVE THE SPINDLE PULLEY FIRST! Now you have access from above to use an impact driver with a short extension rod! I really beat up my hands doing it from below the pulley then realized if you have access from above, VOILA....easy job! They wanted almost $600 from a shop to do the job. Total cost doing it yourself? Less than $100...2 spindles, two belts and my time. NOW.....since each spindle requires the lubricant from a grease gun, how do you determine how many "pumps" to fill tns spindle? I used a newly fully loaded gun and put in about 25 pumps in each. I checked how much was coming out with each pump and about 2-3 tablespoons came out Hope I got enough in there but was curious as to if the spindles were actually DRY with no lube in them. Are they really totally DRY? Seems the manufacturere (bought the ones you suggested) would have greased them from the factory Curious. Love to hear your reply. Dr. Z (Lou)
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 месяца назад
Thanks for watching, Louis! Great tip, thank you! Nice cost savings too! I'll pump the housings full until a little grease comes out of the bearings. That will ensure that the housing and the bearings are full. My experience has been that on recent spindles, the bearings only have a light coat of machine oil in them and no grease at all. That's what causes premature failures in a lot of replacement spindles. If they were greased, they'd last a lot longer. Thanks again!!

Hi thank you so much for the videos. I have a Jonsered yt46. I was mowing and forgot my new cattle panels were laying on the ground. The sun was in my eyes. Oh well you know the rest. I knew I had done something worse than getting wire around the blades. I got it to the front and hot it up on my little ramps. It was on the side opposite the discharge. I call it the adjuster, but I don't know maybe it is the idler. I could not see well enough to tell exactly what I face tomorrow, but I mm a have sheared off all 4 bolts. When I touched the pulley it fell to the deck a b day the blade and spindle are sitting on the ramp. I am not a mechanic, but my hubby was disabled but insisted on directing all farm work. I know some things, but I did not know about the grease fittings on the mower. But I do on the massey. It is hard for this sr. Citizen widow to try to do it all. Thanks.

When I changed my belts, I was worried about busting the bolts to loosen the guide pins to remove the old belt. I just used my hand to push on the pins and I was able to remove the belt without loosening the two bolts. I understand if you are changing the spindles, you don't care if the bolts break. My spindles were fine, and I didn't want to bust the bolts and add more work.

To avoid the bolt breakage in the future, I would suggest a dab of anti-seize on each, I also apply it to my blade bolts. Seeing this I believe I will pull mine for a preventative measure. As you have one intact housing, you could knock the bearings out and either hand pack them or buy replacements at most auto parts places. That way if you do lose one, you will have a spare ready to drop in. My old JD spindles would fail at the weld, they weren't cast like the Husqvarna.
@dwcoffey

Thank you David. All great suggestions, and I think I'll follow your lead. Pulling the bolts and applying anti-seize is a good idea. Thnaks for sharing and thank you for watching!

5:40 I am believing the deck cracks at the hanger mounts are from normal wea( but abnormal quality welding). I only have 1/2 acre here in Florida and only normal mowing. Today I was cleaning my deck and de-rusting the underside to prepare for paint and I observed a crack! I looked at the other side to see what was involved and sure enough, it was the same mount as yours was! Luckily your videos got me to do my 100 hour maintenance and that is why I found it. See, even 3 year old videos can save someone's ass LOL. Anyway, my spindles are ok but next time I need to drop my deck, I will replace them. But as for the crack, I fired up my mig and cranked it to 200 amps with med-low wire speed w/ .025 solid wire and went to town! I'm a happy camper now. I am at the OSPHO point in my anti-rust 'deck' procedure and hopefully I will be painting tomorrow so I can get it mounted back on.. Now I understand how important that water hose cleaning system is. I never used it,but, I will now. I changed my plugs, blade change, air cleaner, and oil/filter today while waiting for the rust converter to dry. I'm a happy camper!!! Your videos are the best I've ever seen. Thanks!!

I think you are correct....whoever is building these decks for Husqvarna needs to review their welding process. I just recently had a guide wheel come of due to broken welds. Hi Dennis, I am from Spain in Europe. I am watching all your videos about your tractorand I like them very much. I am surprised that your videos have so low number of likes and views taking into account how useful they might be for any mower tractor owner. I t hink that must be because of the titles. Maybe the titles you use tend to make people think that it's only valid for your specific model, when that's not true. In fact I have a McCulloch and it's almost the same thing. Even a lot of pieces have exactly the same references. I know this also applies for other brands, cause there is a lot of common parts in that kind of machines. Anyway, thanks for yor videos. they are great.

Perfect video for those looking to tackle a project. I have new spindles, blades and belt coming tomorrow to repair my rz54i husqvarna.. i took the blades off already, but i'll need to remove the pulleys to reuse them. Any suggestions? (note, the one blade stripped off the star gear)
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 5 лет назад
Thank you for watching! It will be much easier to remove the pulleys if the blades are installed. If the one side is so stripped that holding the blade will not prevent the spindle from turning when trying to remove the pulley nut, I'd probably try using vise-grips or maybe a pipe wrench on the underside of the spindle. If that doesn't work, go ahead and take the spindle out and use a vise or other method to hold the spindle shaft so that you can remove the pulley nut. Let me know if that helps, or if you need more help. Good luck with it! thanks again!

Dennis, Great video, just wondering what kind of grease gun did you use to grease the spindles with. i just purchased the zerk spindles and need to get a grease gun as well, that will pretty much be only used for my Husqvarna YTH
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching! Mine is a cheap, no-name grease gun. I've had it for years and can't remember where I bought it. The main things to look for are good threads on both ends of the tube. Make sure both caps will thread on well and tightly. Make sure each cap has a seal in it. A flexible line is much easier to use in more places than a rigid grease line. If I had to buy another one today, I'd probably buy a Lucas or a Lincoln gun.

First of all, I can't thank you enough for your Husqvarna video series. You have taught me a great deal and instilled a lot of confidence as I tackle these maintenance projects. I successfully followed this video, but when I engage the blades I'm getting a terrible squeal from the deck. Could that mean I haven't greased the spindles enough? I purchased the same ones as you, but stopped filling when the grease was pushing back towards the grease gun and spilling out. I don't think I filled mine as much as you did. I can't think of anything else that would be creating that much of a squeal. It's a new belt, but it sounds more metallic in nature. Thank you again!
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 года назад
Thank you for watching and all your support! IT could be a few things.....I'd definitely start with double and triple checking the belt routing. That is probably the most common issue. Next, with the blades disengaged and the mower off, you should be able to turn each spindle/blade by hand. If not, looks for clues about why the one that won't turn is bound up. It may be easier to take the deck off to do this. Without belt tension, each blade should freely spin. If they do not, You should be able to listen to each spindle closely and determine if the bearing is making noise. more grease could help, but you may have a faulty bearing. If none of that helps. let me know and we'll try to figure it out.
@bmbell1919
@bmbell1919 3 года назад
@@dwcoffey Hi Dennis! After some troubleshooting I traced it back to one of the new spindles that seemed to be rubbing internally, almost as if it was warped as it spun. I did listen closely and sure enough heard that metallic sound - albeit much quieter when spun by hand! I ordered the pre-greased (but non-threaded) spindles. With the help of a neighbor, we threaded the holes and the mower is running great. Thank you for your tutorials and remote support. - Brian

OK, you asked for it by replying (at all), and so quickly! I just replaced the spindles on the same tractor. Turns out I only had 1 bad bearing but after breaking off 3 of 8 bolts I just did the whole assembly. The shaft now seems too low as the star teeth (?) barely engage the teeth of the pulley (unless I lose the spacer and don't want that). Will tightening the nut as I'm installing the pulley draw the shaft up? Or did I goof something up? I confess to having disassembled it so I could grease the sealed bearings, 1 bottom had no grease, the other a little and both top ones OK. I'd be glad to hear your thoughts. Thanks
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 года назад
Thanks for watching, Randy! If the shaft is riding too low in the spindle assembly, you may not have the bottom bearing completely seated inside the spindle housing. That would cause the shaft to be too low on the top. And you are correct, you don't want to take that spacer out, it keeps the pulley from rubbing on the top of the spindle housing.

Thank you for watching! sounds like the belt might be too short and thus staying slightly engaged even when tension is relieved. If you have your old belt, I'd check the size of the new belt against the old. I've found that often these new belts are shorter than they are supposed to be. It only take a half inch too short to be a problem.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 6 лет назад
Hi David, I'm not exactly sure which part you are having trouble with, but....the arm that applies and removes the brake on the deck should have a spring attached to it so that it stays in whichever position you have it in. If I'm understanding the problem, sounds like you might be missing a spring. If this helps, you can go to www.husqvarna.com/us/support/manuals-downloads/ and download the parts and owner's manual for free. Let me know if I've missed it and I'll try to help. thanks

Dennis Coffey I was referring to the forward and reverse pedal.When you push it, it's like it's stuck.You have to keep pushing it on and off until it releases. Dave
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 6 лет назад
Gotcha....those pedals are attached to a tube that runs lateral to the frame, then a linkage are is attached to it (underneath the tractor) that runs to the transmission. There is a spring near the transmission-end of that linkage arm. I'd check first to see if the spring is attached as it should be. If not, there are bushings on each end of the tube that the pedals pivot on....it may be that one of those bushings is in need of replacement, or is bound up, etc. You'll probably have to remove the deck to see all of this assembly. The manual I mentioned above may also help identify the parts in the assembly.

the new bearings that come in the new housing are sealed with a cap on each end. If you grease the spindle, there's no way for the grease to enter into the bearings. Might be a good idea to remove the plastic seal covers from the bearing so the grease can get into them otherwise the grease really isn't doing anything.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 5 лет назад
Thank you very much for watching, Rick! I've had this happen to me before. I've done 2 things wrong when putting on a belt. The one that broke the belt right away was that I failed to route the belt under the spring-steel guides that keep the belt on the pulleys. They are about an inch or so wide and stick up vertically at the side of a couple of the pulleys to keep the belt from slipping off. If you don't route the belt between the guides and the pulleys, the sharp edge of the guide will cut the belt and the belt will ride against the brake, which will snatch the belt and break it. The other thing I've done is install the belt 'backwards.' The belt has a flat side and a v-shaped side. You have to install the belt so that the v-shape side runs inside the spindle pulleys and the flat side runs against the idler pulleys. Installed 'backwards', the belt will either break or wear out really quickly. I hope this helps, Rick. If these are not the problems, let me know and we'll figure it out.

Do these spindles need greased from the factory? What’s the torque spec on the pulley nut atop the spindle ?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! I didn't think the bearings would need to be greased from the factory in the past, but experience has taught otherwise. You can take the spindle apart, remove a seal on each bearing and hand pack them if you don't have a zerk fitting on the spindle. If you do have a zerk, you probably need to remove the inner seals on each bearing to allow grease to get into the bearings. Since making this vid, I have found that most aftermarket spindle bearings are not properly greased from the factory. It is difficult to find a published torque spec for the pulley nuts, but 70-80 ft lbs seem to be the standard.
