It is finally time to change the coolant crossover pipes on the Cayman. For new people to the channel, my name is Joe and I have a 2006 Porsche Cayman 987.1 S 3.4. The car has been though extensive work to make it right after buying it just 3 years ago. It all started with bore score and after a full rebuild It is now time to dpi all the little annoying jobs that seem to plaque the Porsche Cayman 987. Todays video is all about coolant loss and the common fault of the coolant hoses breaking down and leaking. This job is called the coolant crossover pipes and its a common job to need to do on many Porsches like 911, Cayennes, Boxster and of course the Cayman 987.
I visit a great garage that is based near me, Arch Garage in Filey. They are German specialists and with the owner having owned and currently owning a lovely classic 911, they know their way around a Porsche. Annoyingly this car is a regular at the garage, seems to cost me a crazy about of money but the aim of the channel was always to be honest on what it is like to own a classic Porsche 987 Cayman S and how much it costs to run. These cars can be bought for a relatively low price but the bills they attract tend to be more in the realm of a £60k car. This is not a way to put people off buying as I adore my car! But I just want to make sure I show a genuine and honest owners account of what its like to own a 17 year old Porsche.

I did all the rubber hoses I could reach on my 997 last year with a new thermostat, water pump, and center radiator. I used a Airlift to refill the coolant and drove around the neighborhood with the heater on. No leaks, I just wanted to get it done since it was 16 years old. Not hard to do and I actually enjoy turning wrenches on it. I spent a couple hundred on parts but definitely came in under 1300.

Hi joe, just to let you know it’s common on the Porsche to leak out after driving that’s the air coming to the top of the system and that’s the overflow pipe for the coolant. Nothing to worry about that just means it was overfilled and it was trying to escape coolant level would have been fine. If I’m honest there is no need to worry about pressuring the system for that reason. I replaced all mine and it’s been fine for over a year since I did all my coolant pipes and control arms as i overhauled everything on mine in a week 😅 just doing my 997 now. But anyway be skeptical with garages you take these too as many don’t understand them properly as they should of told you it was a overflow for the coolant tank to leak out mine did it after replacing mine during MOT 😂 As for exhausts, I strongly reccomend the top gear valved exhaust system that’s what I have on mine with the IPD plenum and the upgraded throttle body. If you do need any help installing it I would be glad to have you come over and help you install it as I have a lift 👍 I literally know these cars inside and out now and can get the corroded bolts from the exhaust flanges off in 5 mins and your cayman is just like my boxster so nothing to it.

If one were thinking about upgrading from the 987 to 997, and they mostly worked on the car themselves, what would you recommend besides the PPI? These cars have a lot in common but I’m unsure how reliable 997 is compared to 987 which I beat on constantly(with love)
@BMWDoctor
@BMWDoctor 10 месяцев назад
@@Regigigas135789 I would say 987 is much cheaper to look after engine wise then a 997. As for coolant hoses and control arms the only difference between both is the 987 doesn’t use the two upper control arms which are expensive which the 997 does. I have both and I can tell you now mechanically wise the 987 is much cheaper engine wise as for instance on the 987 engine there is only one PCV where on the 997 there is two which can cost £600 upwards to replace all during a rebuild. But then we are talking about a 911 and of course, a 911 doesn’t come cheap 😅 preferably I prefer driving my boxster s I love it but can’t wait to get my 997 on the road also.

@@BMWDoctorI think I need to be your friend I've just purchased my first Porsche and I'm happy but very anxious at the same time 😂😂 I mean at this rate do I drive it more than half a mile once a month????? 😂
@BMWDoctor
@BMWDoctor 9 месяцев назад
@@500res don’t know what to tell you on that one just drive it for now until it stops going that’s all I can really say. If your anxious about Porsche ownership then you can always sell it back on without losing money and get something else Because at some point them fears are going to become reality it’s just the way it is with Porsche that’s why it’s always best to buy the best one you can get and not the cheapest Porsche you can get that’s the saying anyway. Just be careful when you take it to garages as they will have you up about Porsche ownership a good friend of mine just this week found that out with his 986 went in there for a new clutch and upgraded ims he ended up walking out with a whole new flywheel new clutch new ims because the guys broke the clutch fork taking out the gearbox and blamed it on the flywheel being old. In the end he left with a bill of £4000 which they told him before he took it it would only be £1500 to do it. That’s how garages are right now they want more money not small money. Let’s bear in mind with £4000 I could do the whole ims , clutch , and all control arms and still have money left after that but most of that he paid is labour. It’s put him off completely that he know is going to sell it because running and owning a Porsche especially if you ain’t mechanically minded is seriously not the right thing to do as garages will strike you on the prices.

Something to consider I’ve done recently on my GR (to preserve the way it is ) is to Lanoguard the chassis. Easy to prep and apply, will future proof the car especially being near the sea. P.S Good to see you back mate.

My dot 2 has started to leak coolant, leaking grease from a rusted CV joint that need replacing, lower coffin arms worn out rear discs…there is no such thing as a poor man Porsche unless you have never owned one. This is what Porsche ownership is all about, smiles and pain.

Breake pads on a Golf 6 held about 15km after they first light up... Keep it driving as long as possible and they are save/you feel save.

I had brakes and rotors done on my 2007 boxster. One thing that might be worth considering to save a few bob is to have your pads done by STS tyres. I am told they use Bebo pads and they will relace them free for life! Obvs confirm b4 parting with cash!

These pipes use dissimilar metals,aluminium and steel causing electrolytic corrosion so a common problem,crossovers were done on my 997 was £1200 since had all of them done rears required the engine out so they were done at the same time as the IMS bearing and rear main seal,interested to know if they dropped the steering rack to do the crossovers on the cayman?as was the case with 997...
@MrDemontrigger
@MrDemontrigger 10 месяцев назад
My 987.2 Cayman had the front subframe dropped to replace my crossovers. I read it can be done without doing so, but takes longer. £1200 pounds for mine with all new coolant.
@ism671
@ism671 10 месяцев назад
@MrDemontrigger sorry yes,subframe separated from steering rack...
@BMWDoctor
@BMWDoctor 10 месяцев назад
The steering rack must be removed to do all coolant pipes. The whole subframe has to be dropped and the fuel tank supported I know this as I have done this 4 times already on the last 2 months it’s not a really involved job but I would really really strongly reccomend to make the garage life easier as I tell everyone that comes to me replace all the control arms while you are there. That’s because many don’t realise the front koffin arm bolts seize and are a b***ch to remove! It’s much easier to cut them off as you can spend hours trying to remove a seized bolt that is the easiest way of doing it and the quickest way. Controls arms are not expensive neither is the tracking forks you can get them all meyle ones online and it’s best practise to replace them. As for the crossover pipes it will not just be the cross over pipes need replacing you will also need the plastic pipes aswell that sit on the subframe due to them seizing. Just as I say it’s a big problem with the electrolytic the bolts into the bushing are a nightmare that’s why I tell everyone just replace the lot while your there that way you can always remove it again if you ever have too. As for cost the coolant pipes the kit is £650 from design911 and it’s doable it can be done under a hour the whole lot as I said I have done this 4 times so I know how long it should take. It’s really not a intense job

I drive my cayman every single day without a issue the car has been bullet proof, to be expected a 10-15 year old car is going to have 10 year old car problems but once everything is dialed in they’re amazing. I’m lucky enough to afford a very clean vehicle with 30k miles
