Hi Plant Besties,
This is a simple and easy to follow guide to how to repot Monstera Deliciosa otherwise known as the swiss cheese plant!
look at my Monstera Thai Consellation that had roots growing through the drainage holes that's a sure sign this beauty needs a bigger pot to call it home. Let's repot this Monstera together and this technique applies to all types of Monstera Deliciosa.
Soil mixture is important. We want an airy soil mixture and not a dense one. Monstera are native to the tropical rainforest of Mexico and Panama where there is alot of organic matter from decaying leaves and animals. It's not dry like the dessert but has matter that provides good drainage and holds some moisture. We want replicate this soil as close as possible. My soild mixture contains equal parts of potting mix, warm casting, Orchid bark, Horticultural charcoal and Perlite. To could replace the perlite with Pumice or Vermiculite instead. What mixture you use just make sure it's chucky and airy.
I usually go two pot sizes above the original pot as Monstera roots grow fast and l don't want to have to repot my Monstera again in another 2-3 years instead of annual repotting. If your new to growing a Monstera choose a nursery pot that has alot of drainage holes. This will help you avoid overwatering a monstera as can easily get rid of excess water if happen to overwater the plant. I have grown Monstera for years so l am going to repot mine in a self watering pot. I don't recommend a self watering pot for beginners as it can lead to overwatering if not careful.
To take the Monstera out of the nursery pot was difficult. I had to squash the sides of the nursery pot and pull it out. It might have been better to cut the nursery pot but l didn't want to do that as l want to recycle the pot and use it for another plant. Some of the roots especially the ones growing through the drainage holes was broken. It can't be helped, it's just collateral damage! Honestly, the Monstera will still be fine. Check for any rotting roots which look like black or brown or mushy roots. These look creamy white so the roots of this Monstera are in excellent condition. I have removed some of the old soil and losesed up the roots as the roots were so root knotted up. I have already pre moist the soil as it helps reduce soil matter flying in the air and breathing that air in.
Monstera are aeroids and they like to climb. I'm using a Moss climbing pole today which l made at home. I have not fully packed the pole with sphagnum moss as this Monstera is not big enough to require it. I will gradually add Sphagnum moss as required. I will place pole at the back of the pot. I already partially filled the pot with soil, I place the the Monstera in the centre and attach the back of the plant to the pole and with plant tape.
It time to back fill the pot and leaving about 2 inches or 3cm of space from rim of the pot to prevent soil from dropping our of the pot. Light tap and shimmy the pot to prevent air pockets in the soil. Also use a stick and go around the pot to get rid of air pockets as well.
I will place my Monstera in area where it receives indirect sunlight. I will not water my Monstera until the soil and moss pole has dried and the l will go and give my monstera a good watering and remoisten the sphagnum moist as well.
This is my Monstera about 3 weeks later and the new leaf as unfolded.

Great video! Ty. I have 2 small ‘cottage cheese plant’ cuttings. I just rooted them & put them in a nice soil mixture, in a 6” pot - both with their roots facing the center - hopefully preparing for a moss pole later on). 😉 My main question is this: Should I leave both cuttings in the same pot? I’m really not sure how big these will grow. Guess I just have to watch them & see how they grow. I will certainly appreciate any advice that anyone is willing to give me. Thank you!
