I don't think Amazon is the biggest threat to the book industry; intellectual laziness, the loss of reading habits, the lack of curiosity and education, and authoritarian regimes are far more influential and dangerous. I agree that legislation is the best way to limit Amazon's aggressiveness; I live in France and I can confirm that well-managed independent bookshops have a future (partially thanks to our laws). I heard on the news this weekend (I'm writing this on Sunday the 06/06/21) that many countries have agreed to create a global tax for large multinational companies like Amazon (one of the main problems with Amazon is that it pays less taxes than bookshops in countries like France, which is unfair); I don't know yet if it will really happen (and if it does, we'll see if it helps).
