After comparing the RetroTINK 2X and 5X Pro to the AV2HDMI in previous videos, I found myself curious to also compare them something that utilizes Component. So let's check out this 1080p Component to HDMI Converter, the Portta! We'll compare the Portta to the 2X and 5X Pro on the GameCube, PS2, Xbox, and even PS3 to test a variety of Console Output Settings using Component Cables.
*I did not choose the Portta for any specific reason, I came across it when buying an AV2HDMI for my previous videos and bought it on a whim. I also refer to it as an upscaler, that is a mistake on my part, it converts, up to 1080p Sources.
RU-vid's compression has also caused the line/pattern issue I described to be difficult/impossible to see depending on what device you are watching this video on. I took screenshots from the final export and placed them in a Google Doc Folder, which anyone can access with the link below:
drive.google.com/drive/folder...
*Important Call-Out: RU-vid's compression does take away a lot of detail that is seen in person that devices like RetroTINK, RAD2X, CARBY, and more output. Bear that in mind with any content containing capture footage from those devices. My commentary and opinions come from the Raw Capture Files and what it looks like on my TV, I can't account for what details are lost to compression until after the video is uploaded.
The GameCube is using Retro-bit Prism Cables
The PS2 and PS3 is using HD-Retrovison Component Cables
The Xbox is using Generic Component Cables

*The Portta does not actually upscale like I originally thought, thanks to a comment this was brought to my attention. I changed the title of the video and thumbnail to reflect that. Should’ve done more homework on the Portta itself, that is 100% my mistake. I impulse bought it while in the middle of making the AV2HDMI and thought it would fun to check out an adapter that had component. As the Portta doesn’t scale, just converts, it’s supposed to be nearly lag free device, making it superior to a lot of the other cheap options of converting Analogue Cabling to HDMI. I had the issue with the line pattern on 480p sources, but not everyone else has. Just be sure not to find yourself with a bootleg. Could very well be that the one I have here is, and a legit one would not have had the patterns that I observed on 480p sources.

A great series of videos highlighting the pros and con of each device. I use my Portta in conjunction with the Mclassic. Gamecube titles used on a Wii outputting 480p. All PS2 games are played via GSM (80% of games work fine) outputting at 480p and the Xbox at 480p to maintain a decent framerate. Really happy with my setup, but a RetroTink 5x would always be very welcome :) Thanks Mike :)

Thanks for this video. It’s exactly what I am looking for. I am just starting to get interested in retro gaming and figured I’d start with the PS2 that’s been sitting in my storage for 15 years. And of course step 1 is figuring out how to even connect it to one of my monitors or modern TVs. After a lot of reading and your video I think I’ll start with the Portta and component cables which seems perfectly fine for the budget. The Retrotink’s aren’t available in my country without a big $ and shipping (a 2x would probably cost me 10x the Portta).

The Portta was pretty good looking back. I was expecting this terrible thing, but it performed pretty well. If RetroTink ever does reach you, let it be known that an update for the 5X Pro came out recently that upgraded the motion adaptive deinterlacer, it made the PS2 experience a little better. Regarding the Portta; not everyone has had the problem with the screen pattern that I saw, so it’s perfectly possible that mine was defective in some way and it isn’t something universal to the device.

Fantastic video, sir. I've had a Porta for a year or so (had no idea it had a following) and like it overall. 2 problems: It doesn't always play nice with my switchbox and loses the signal all together. It also has those interference lines people are talking about. They are tolerable, but are quite bad on the Wii menu screen and ocean views on Xbox. Otherwise, the colors pop and are quite gorgeous. I forgive the jaggys because I'm displaying it on a 75" TV. That's a lot to ask a $20 device to contend with. My 2x line doubler works brilliantly with consoles such as the Saturn. It does an impressive job with the S-video signal. As far as component goes, it cleans up the PS2 respectably. It doesn't do much for the Wii & Xbox, so I just use the Porta with those.
@RetroBoost

Thanks! The Wii being something that can output 480p, makes the 2X Pro not as ideal a solution, same for Xbox, though not everything is 480p, but some are higher. I learned that the hard way when first messing around with my 2X Pro, the picture kept cutting in and out, then I realized it’s because it can’t accept 480p input. I had the 2X Pro M, and began to use that for those consoles. For PS2, and all the stuff earlier, the 2X Pro is excellent though, especially if you bump up the cable quality to S-Video or component. I liked the Portta as well, but man those lines are an issue for me, although they seemed to mostly strike on 480p Sources with solid dominant colors (like your ocean example), they are annoying. Not everyone has noticed or has them though, so maybe we got a bad batch? Anything is possible there.
@RetroCak

@@RetroBoost Yes, your video crystalized what I leaned by working with these devices. Everything I mentioned is running through component except for the Saturn, which is S-Video. I'm shocked at how clean the picture is. Curious that some don't have the lines with the Portta. I kinda need two to keep from swapping out my devices, so I may just order another one. Thanks for the in-depth response.

Thanks everyone for watching! It has been an interesting and educating journey making content. One thing I've come to learn is the impact RU-vid's Compression can have on the footage from all these Retro Enhancement Devices. Keep in mind that some detail is always lost with compression. My commentary is in response to what I've experienced from playing on my TV and watching the Raw Capture Files. I've added this info to the description of videos going forward, but wanted to post this comment to all the videos prior to that change. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!

23:00 Jak & Daxter is a bad example for this test. It's only of those rarities where linedoubling works best for it. I don't recall the details, but I believe it treats each field as a frame rather than a half-frame. In most other PS2 scenarios, you'll want to deinterlace normally.

Nice TV! OLED seems like one of the best to run stuff like RetroTINK on. I’d agree with your line of thinking, the 2X Pro is a pretty great way of getting the PS2 up on a modern screen, especially since it can take component. The smooth filter also helps out with that system too.

Thanks! I’m wondering more and more if I just got either a off-spec Portta or a defective one. I was thinking defective when I made this video, but after some more research it looks like it could be one of those things where it’s possible to buy a knock off or bad model, that kind of thing (maybe, not sure, just wondering). If I didn’t have the weird line patterns, I’d say it was honestly fantastic. The only limit being it doesn’t support the older Gen game consoles, but for $25 ish bucks, getting this for just a GameCube, or Wii is a great deal.

It was brought to my attention that the line/pattern issue I talk about with my Portta wasn't visible. I guess it is an issue with YT's compression or something. I created a Google Doc Folder that anyone who is interested can access to see screenshots of the issue I am talking about. The screenshots are taken from the final export of the video. The final export is what I always test watch to try and catch errors, but I can't ever really take the compression into account unfortunately. It is something I will try to be more mindful of going forward. Check the description for the link, and thanks for watching!

I recently picked up the Portta with component cables and I played Devil May Cry and Ratchet and Clank, on the PS2, obviously. They looked kinda Ike crap on my 4k TV?. What am I doing wrong? The image quality looks the same as when using the PS2 to HDMI adapter. Also, how can you change the resolution on the RetroTink 2x? I thought it was all preset to play 480i and potentially 480p.

Nice grab! I’d say yes, the 5X Pro has a host options for helping process the signal before it goes to the tv. And unlike the tv, it has some features specialized for interlaced sources, of which the best you get from the gamecube I would think is 480i. I can speak from experience that consoles going into a 4K Samsung look very “fuzzy/blurry.” Check out the 5X Pro wiki, it’ll breakdown all the settings you can customize, to give you an idea of what it can do for your GameCube is you get one: consolemods.org/wiki/AV:RetroTINK-5X_Pro#Interpolation/De-interlacing

If you want good performance, the 2X Pro and RAD2X-PlayStation 2 versions are going to be among the suggestions for something good in the entry level space. Cheapest option for the PS2 that I’ve come across is the Portta. The only probably I had with the Portta was this line pattern on 480p sources, that won’t be much of an issue for the PS2.

I have a HD TV with 720p from 2010 and it offers component cable Input directly into the TV and it looks like HD. But I want to buy a Porter and use the same component cables on my 1080p TV do you think the image quality will be better
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 7 месяцев назад
Hard to say without seeing it in action, but chances are the video quality will be reduced. I used to play my old consoles on a 720p 32” tv. Then I got a 48” 4K TV and was blown away by how terrible my consoles now looked (when connected directly). Your situation isn’t as much of a jump as mine was though, so I don’t think it would be as noticeable as my experience. The Analogue to Digital Conversion part of modern TVs is very lackluster, so using a converter or scaler like Portta or RetroTink will help with giving the TV something that is already digital, bypassing said lackluster conversion.

My TV is a 4K one also, that is what led to me eventually playing around with stuff like RetroTINK, because direct composite into my TV looks so terrible. The 5X Pro has delivered many experiences to me that I've compared to emulation. In particular, SNES with Component or RGB SCART, and Wii with the 480p Patch via USB Loader. The latter of which I've started messing around with recently.

I plan on getting the 2X Pro or 5X Pro specifically for the 8-16 bit consoles (TopLoader RGB mod, SNES, Super GameBoy, GEN & TGFX) and nothing beyond that, on a smaller 42" LG C3 OLED using HD Retrovision component cables. Is it even worth going for the 5x Pro in my case since I won't be dabbling with anything beyond the SNES?
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost 2 месяца назад
The 2X Pro makes the most sense there in my eyes. Since it supports component, you can eventually get upgraded cables for it to squeeze the most out of consoles like the SNES. The 5X Pro gives you the more robust Scanline experience, given all the customization and the ability for it to force the TV into its HDR picture mode, but it’s up to you if those features plus the other consoles and features the 5X Pro can support is worth the price increase.
@NeonPizzas
@NeonPizzas Месяц назад
@@RetroBoost Oh, so the the 5X pro is also capable of forcing HDR into the picture when using messing with scan lines? I thought that was only exclusive to the TINK4K?
@RetroBoost
@RetroBoost Месяц назад
@@NeonPizzas It began with the 5X Pro last year. Got the update sometime in the first half of 2023 if I remember correctly. It can add an HDR Flag to the output, which literally tricks the TV into thinking it’s getting an HDR Source. The benefit is that the TV enters a brighter picture mode. Couple that with scanlines and you get a great CRT simulation. Couple that with OLED, and you get the best CRT Emulation (so I hear).
@NeonPizzas
@NeonPizzas Месяц назад
@@RetroBoost Sounds great! I plan on either hooking this up to a 55" Samsung QD-'OLED' or a smaller 43" QD-LED. Not a fan of LG WOLED anymore, the colours are pretty awful compared to Plasma & CRT and they inherently have some pretty nasty black crush. QD-OLED colours get you closer to Plasma and CRT, and you can easily correct the out of box black crushing without paying for a a pro calibration. But motion blur is obviously a thing unless you settle for BFI which clears out 50% of it. But unfortunately, latency shoots up to around 30ms on the S90C & maybe even the S90D. Current LG WOLED's hit around 16-20ms with BFI by comparison. But ya, does the RT4k have more robust scan line and CRT softness options than the 5X Pro by any chance?

Cool, hope the one you found works out! I think the “generic” ones float around between manufacturers, it’s not uncommon, that is probably why you can’t find it. Whoever was making it isn’t anymore, and some other group has started to manufacture it or use misc parts in a similar or new product. That’s why you see 43 million versions of that AV2HDMI thing, as an example.

At the time that I made this video, I did like the 2X Pro over the 5X Pro for the PS2. Since then I’ve come to understand more of the 5X Pro’s abilities, it does offer a more flexible and complete experience. With the 5X Pro, playing around with any of 1080p Output modes with the Hi-Res 858 Sampling mode with or without scanlines can produce great results. The RetroTink Devices also offer more flexibility in both the type of inputs they take and the source resolutions, plus the 5X Pro’s scanline features offer great CRT Emulation, especially when paired with its ability to flag HDR. If you wanted a simple way to convert some of the 5th and 6th gen consoles to hdmi though, Portta is a great option, not everyone had the issue with the pattern like it did, it’s possible I got a bootleg or defective one.

Yes. Plus they typically add latency, at least the ones that claim to scale do. Another example of this problem is with Home Theater Receivers (AVRs): I was told that all of a particular brand had the same Analogue to Digital Video Converter, meaning an AVR that cost $500 or the top end model for $4000 have the exact same converter. It looks no different than plugging it into the tv directly running through there, which goes to show that those things probably use the same generic internal converters too. It’s just something that isn’t given much thought.

@@RetroBoost wow yeah it's SUPER noticeable, and I'd go as far to say it's pretty bad on the Portta

I feel you there, I bought one just before it disappeared. It's got so much utility with its ability to take 480p. Hope it comes back, or maybe a future iteration of the 2X Pro get's those abilities.

I have the 2x Pro and I just can't get past the flicker on 480i content. Was looking at getting the Portta for that but the combing is really bad, thanks for showing that. 5x seems to be great but getting one and affording one are two different things it seems. My favorite solution for 480i is the the GBS-Control, specifically the ODV one (it's a horrific looking Orange Box) but man does it make PS2 games look their best even the 480i stuff.

Odd, as i use the Portta and i don't get those lines. I wouldn't use it if it did. Looks like interference lines..nasty

I was wondering if it was noise/interference. With the same cabling pathways, I don’t get them on my retrotinks or my startech usb capture card. I even tried using Ferrite Beads. Did not get rid of them.

Knowing that it might be noise and/or potentially a defective unit, I wasn’t holding that too hard against it. And as I said, it was only really noticeable on 480p content with solid color. 720p content looked excellent.

@@RetroBoost Mine are older units and maybe with the parts shortages the internals have changed. What i will say is that I found the Portta to be a little dark. Using with the Xbox for 'Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance' the image was so dark and even adjusting the TV would not fix the issue.

@@RetroBoost Maybe you should put the portta in some kind of metal enclosure and see if it helps. Maybe even wrapping it in a couple layers of aluminum foil. Maybe it just has weak shielding?

Those generic converters add a huge amount of variable input lag, terrible for playing videogames.

I didn’t notice any with either the AV2HDMI or the Portta, but with so many different manufacturers making their own AV2HDMIs, I can definitely believe that. I could’ve gotten lucky with my experience. I did play more than what was used to make the comparison footage just so I could see if that was the case, but didn’t note any with what I played.

At the time of me getting mine, Bob from RetroRGB had done a feature on the Portta and was a very good device with no lag. It does appear that the internals have since changed and is perhaps no longer a good choice.
