After a busy afternoon of thrift store shopping in Atlanta, Nelson Sullivan returns to Funtone USA World Headquarters to show the gang there his loot. Video by Nelson Sullivan
I find Nelson's videos so comforting and I'm not even sure why. I have bad insomnia and I always find myself watching them when I'm having trouble sleeping.
Denny Benz He probably doesn’t appreciate it. I’m sure he wants along with other celebrities to be in control of what’s out there. Even though he speaks highly of Nelson (Why wouldn’t he) he still probably wished they weren’t out there. I wonder if he even talked about Nelson publicly BEFORE the tapes came out. I feel like now he’s obligated too.
It's apparent from the videos that many of the folks being taped didn't want to be, if only for aesthetic reasons. After all, the performers among them were usually not made up for their closeups, the lighting was always terrible, and Nelson's fisheye lens distorted everything. And RuPaul no doubt feels that his stage routine in the mid 80s wasn't all that slick.
Thanks. Love seeing more new material. It always takes me back to how I felt at the time, which was happy but also somewhat uneasy over what was to come. I get that with him as well, in these later videos. I'm sorry he didn't get to see the changes of the world but also glad he didn't have to see them. It's always a bit eerie to me though how much more modern he feels than a lot of what is around from this timeframe.
Times were definitely different, I was 21 in 1987. I use hit those thrift stores back in the day, they were practically giving things away, they were so much fun and amazing.....wearing vintage clothing was all the rage in 1987!!!!! Then my boyfriend told me about a show he had seen on PBS called "Antique Roadshow." He said, u can say goodbye to all "those good finds" u find thrift stores, he was right....
Every time I watch days I'm amazed… I love going back in time and that was the best time in my life I was in my 20s and I wish so much that Nelson could have lived to see how far ahead in time he was doing this and he is so damn good at it! I believe it's his brother that is putting these up and I sure do appreciate it I just love him and the videos and his friends & the life he shows us I've never been to New York it's always been a dream before I die and I just love the old New York! 💕
Love your vids and Nelson was super cool, love his style✌A person so full of life gone less than five months after this😢He sure lit up this world, lot's of love to him❤
I'm addicted to these videos, something about the year 1989 intrigues me. Maybe it was because it was the only year of the 1980s decade that I was old enough to remember strongly. There are things that seem old about it and yet futuristic at the same time. I do remember my family flying to Orlando in June of 1989 for our trip to Disney world and remember people smoking on the plane. I know Nelson films a video on his drive back at a McDonald's and I remember that in 1989 McDonald's put everything in these styrofoam containers that were not biodegradable. Anyone else remember that?? RIP Nelson
Nelson wasn't very robust, and his crowd maintained what would be an exhausting lifestyle for those of us who lead more mundane lives. And traveling about carrying a video camera at arm's length while narrating the action being recorded saps one's energy regardless of physical conditioning.
I just love Nelson but sad news he's also been dead for years he died from a heart attack in 1989 I'm sure he would love to be here watching his videos this as he is getting really famous and probably would as famous as pewdiepie if he was still alive today RIP Nelson you will be missed
*Even tho Nelson is no longer with us. His videos continue to inspire the new generation; people like me. I'm glad Nelson passed in an much simpler time before 9/11, Isis, & Donald Trump. RIP.*
Don nix well I mean everyone thinks he is evil but he isn’t. He has already done a lot for our country and made things better for us. He isn’t racist just because he doesn’t want illegal immigration. (Cause it’s fucking illegal and they could do it legally) And he is trying to make the green card process easier to get through. He’s also protecting our country from outside countries we had issues with in the past.
RYKERS DAD 420 AKA FATDABZ I have not forgotten about Obama, how could anyone forget a president who did nothing to help people In the black community he claimed to care about. There is no way I could forget about the president who ran up our debt more than all previous presidents combined.Don't worry, I didn't forget about him.
$1.39 for a 2 liter of Coke! In my town a 2 liter of Coke that is not on sale is $1.29. It is crazy how some things were more expensive back in the day than now.
Candler Park Market looked bigger back then, and was definitely more packed with stuff. Now, it's a great place, but a bit more sparse...seemingly smaller.
Marcus Smith I remember my mom buying those leggs too!!! Do you remember going to McDonald's in 1989 when all the food was put in those non biodegradable styrofoam containers??
I never knew he was a famous person I thought he was just a person who recorded videos of him doing things. But I searched him up he is photographer wow and he dead.
Dick Richards...his childhood friend and the one who uploaded all of these videos. He died 2 years ago though 😥. www.artsatl.org/obituary-funtone-founder-dick-richards-first-to-televise-rupaul/
I hate to be _that_ person, but I just love Nelson and his videos so much, that I just want to know everything....did he contract aids? Is that why he passed?
William A I have seen still pictures other people took of him while he would shoot like this. The camera was huge and it looked odd but he was a master videographer way ahead of his time. I think by 89 he had gotten an 8 mm camera that was a little less awkward looking.
