We used them for onboard generators for light ship duty. A caveat: When a ship is totally dead, no juice in the batteries, we used a hand started single cylinder air cooled diesel to charge the 24 v batteries. Once charged we could start this small cat to run the compressors, thus the large diesels were started with compressed air. Once this little Cat was running we had lights and ventilation. To hear it start up was pure music to some hot sweaty engineers.

When I worked at international if you wanted to enable the 6th gear in the allison you would have to bring the truck in and fill out a request form with all the specs on the engine and drivetrain to check the calculations to ensure driveline speed wouldn't be exceeded by the addition of the 6th gear as well as adding a max speed limiter. Once it was approved by engineering the request would be sent to allison to create the program and reflash the tcm enabling the 6th gear. Was around a $600 charge here in Canada.

Hello there! Thanks for the positive info. I have heard all kinds of negative reviews about the 3126 cat engines, which makes me kind of want to shy away completely... but reading a post from someone like you who actually own the engine, gives me hope.... My question is: would you recommend a 2000 Freightliner, 3126E 185hp, with 245k miles on the motor...... Automatic, clean engine, zero rust, clean interior? If so, how many more miles can I expect out of it? Please let me know something. Thanks.

What is good about inline 6 s when it comes to plant engines is you can make a modular engine with fewer or more cylinders but using a common architecture. It is more complicated making a V8 and a V6 and a v4. Plus inline engines are simple and 6s are smooth, but those long cranks can be expensive to make well. Great video Rich. That oil pressure driven injector system sounds interesting.

@ethanonorato

I have 2 single axles one with 466 one with 3126. The cat pulls a lot harder has less idle vibration and pulls a lot better at low rpm. The 466 is probably the best small truck engine ever built. Mine is also one of the high pressure oil model 466. The 466 has a lot more injector rattle, poor low end power and a ton of idle vibration. Navistar hpop engines always struggled with air in the fuel rail and should have had ruglated fuel returns from the factory on them. The 466 is probably still more reliable in my mind and I would say starts a little better in the cold but both start pretty damn good

Biggest problem with Caterpillar engines was that every time management changed, they moved production back and forth from Mexico. Mexican made parts were always needing to be reworked or scrapped. Most engine production for on road engines used to be at Peoria, IL. Now the factory is just a shell as production was moved south. Trying to make EPA requirements didn't help either. Best engines for quality were 3406/3408.

Thanks for the info! I have a 2003 Stewart & Stevenson M1079. It has a 3126/275HP mated to a 7 speed Allison trans and transfer case (full time 4x4 with 70/30 limited slip xfer case. Put the Allison in "Mode" and it locks the xfer case 50/50). Ours has about 28,000 original miles on it and runs like a top. Also, this variant has a factory installed exhaust brake--which, works well at our weight. We keep the oil clean and change it once a year, as we never drive it more than a couple thousand miles annually.

That's what I was gonna do with a 2001 bluebird TC2000 with the 24v cummins I have too many trucks to maintain so chopped it up and took the motor and the allison transmission with it and its sitting in my garage. I paid 1200 for it. Looking at buying a 2015 Bluebird vision with a 6.7 cummins and allison transmission with a slight wreck where the door opens for $5000 Delete the engine and turn it into a mega pickup with some giant tires on it lol. The bus models I think only run about 200 ish hp so I have to tune it and whatever that 5.9 makes 190hp and the c7's make 210 not sure about the specific specs on that bus. I'll see how this goes.. P.S might put the 5.9 in an old G wagon or range rover or something of that sort lol if I can find it for cheap.

GREAT VIDEO! I HAVE TO TELL YOU MY OWN 3126 FUN EXPERIENCE!! A FRIEND OF MINE WAS WANTING TO BUY A WRECKER WITH A 3126, BUT WAS TOLD BY THE SELLER IT HAD "STARTING ISSUES"! MY FRIEND ASKED ME TO LOOK THINGS OVER BEFORE HE BOUGHT! I LOOKED THINGS OVER AND FOUND THE PRIMARY FUEL FILTER MISSING, BASE AND ALL AND THE LINES SPLICED TOGETHER! BEFORE EVEN TRYING TO START WE FIXED THE PRIMARY FILTER AND PIPING AND CHANGED BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY FILTERS. WE PRIMED AND BLED THE LINES AND FILTERS AND THEN STARTED IT UP! STARTED EASILY AND WAS RUNNING FINE FOR ABOUT 90 SECONDS THEN IT WENT NUTS WITH A TERRIFIC OVERSPEED! I GOT TO THE KEY AND THANKFULLY IT WENT DOWN OK, WITH MUCH SMOKE BEING MADE! LOOKING IT OVER WE DISCOVERED THERE WAS SOME EXTRA PLASTIC PIPING INSTALLED BETWEEN THE CRANKCASE BREATHER AND THE AIR INLET TO THE TURBOCHARGER! THE ENGINE HAD A TERRIFIC AMOUNT OF BLOWBY AND THE SELLER COBBLED THIS UP TO CHANNEL THE BLOW BY BACK THROUGH THE ENGINE! LOL NOT A GOOD IDEA, AS THE OVERSPEED WAS BEING FED BY THE BLOW BY!! FORTUNATELY MY FRIEND DECIDED THIS WAS NOT A TRUCK FOR HIM!!! LOL

The 3126 is a good engine. Has buttloads of torque for a small diesel. We had one in a kodiak 6500 rollback. Truck could pull a house down. Was a great engine.

I’m kind of curious myself. It’s such an anemic engine, I’m wondering what exactly you have to do to get at least into the 200 horsepower range(I think they’re rated at 110).

had a 3126 cat in a 2003 freightliner FL-80 was a great engine only problem i had with it was the injection pump went out 1 time and also blew a turbo at 1,015,000 miles when we had to give the truck up due to the crashed economy my brother and I had racked up 1,026,000 miles on it still running strong

The 3126 engine is pretty dang reliable. Over built like a tank. Keeping good clean engine oil is a good thing to do for them. We have 20 plus year old busses running thm still on the orginal engine with drivers who don't stop untill there is an issue. We also had an otr guy who stayed ontop of his maintenance that went 1 million miles before having is drop a new on in his truck.

Inline 6 has 2 huge advantages, first is the longer stroke for torque, second is that it is a naturally balanced engine, no primary or secondary vibrations.

The cat IT62G loaders had this engine in them. Another issue was the gasket at the oil filter housing would bypass sending dirty engine oil threw the injection system.

HUEI was introduced on the 3408 and 3412 in the late 1980s next to the 60 series. During that time Cat was trying to find ways of reducing fuel consumption in mining applications and at that time developed engines that were far ahead of their time and Cummins was biting their tongue trying to keep up with their KT series and 1710 engines. Cat sold the patents to international in early 1993 to build 3 different engine, the T444E, DT466 and 530

@walkerv8530 4 года назад
@@TheBrokenLife it was gonna happen eventually ford had the 6.7 itself developed and running 10 years before anyone new about it , this is info given to me by an engineer that tested it before he went to gm to work. I imagine the only thing they had to do was the emissions side of it once they new what tier4 final regulations were gonna be . Mack trucks lost tons of sales when them and Caterpillar had a falling out which was around the time volvo purchased mack from Renault, stuff happens. Emissions are what is really to blame here , the electronic diesels were already some clean burning engines govermant fd that up just like they screwwed up a gas can .

Kyle Giannette I got both blocks, they are basically good boat/generator engines that got dumped into a pickup, only buy if you intend on running them on heated used kitchen grease or used motor oil, since they came with two factory tanks it is an excellent conversion for a novice mechanic.

Allison 1k/2k/3k/4K all can be changed from 5 to 6 speed using programming. Depending on model yr.. you need software and cal ID to do so. Same internals on clutch packs and planetaries. GM is a different beast due to GM has the Allison rights to their product when the buyout happened.

I am currently driving a Bluebird 07 with a Cat engine. It is the hardest cold start engine I have ever seen. It gets below 50 F and you don’t have the heater plugged in you will be cranking for a long no time. But, it is the strongest bus of all the buses in our yard. The body is rusted pretty bad and lets air in like a sieve. When we retire this bus I want the engine and now I am even more intrigued after this video.

you did a very good review! I worked on a lot of those myself as a caterpillar mechanic on the truck engine side. You hit on the main issues which are the heui system itself. I saw quite a few issues with the IAP sensors as well as the driver that controlled the actuation pressure. That was usually my main go to on them. Also quite a few issues with blown injector O-rings that would leak off engine oil and cause running issues. Using 10 weight 30 oil in the winter will dramatically help starting this engine, and so will changing the oil at less than 7000 miles. I resealed quite a few rear engine covers on these, this was the start of cats use of anaerobic sealer on everything. While a dramatic improvement over the 3116 engine, I didn't see a lot of these that were still around by 400,000 miles. The DT466 / 530e engines were better in my opinion. keep very good fuel filters on any unit injector system as it may be the difference of getting 150,000 or 400,000 miles out of the injectors!.
