Review. Honda VTX 1800 vs Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Suzuki 

What a great tamed beast of a motorcycle! The Honda VTX 1800 has to be one of the best big cruiser motorcycles ever made. It's really hard to beat the quality, precision, and reliability of the big Honda cruisers from the 1,312 (80 cu. in.) to the 1,800 (110 cu. in.).

I have a 2002 vtx1800r. Its 2020 and it still runs like new. It's a reliable beast and riding anything else has felt like a step down,to me anyway. Most of the people I ride with are on harleys. They joked about me going with honda until our first rides with it. They didnt have jokes at the end of the rides.

all i know is i have a 2006 VTX 1800, and when i ever pull up next to a harley, the guy looks and then acts like he don't see it, which means it must look pretty good anyways.

Obviously you've spent a lot of time researching all this stuff. I found it to be entertaining. I have a VTX1800 and I love it! Funny thing is that I works at a Harley dealer. Truth is, the VTX has more power for way less money. Nice video. Cheers

I found your review seemed to be right on target ... Harley is made in my hometown and since I was a kid I've always wanted one... but when I first went to buy it, I was shocked and disappointed with the pricing, even for the smaller bikes. It just seemed I would be paying more for the name than I would for the machine. ... I've had 2 VTX 1300Cs now, and they are reliable, requiring little maintenance (comparably), and with a Hyper-Charger intake I get plenty of power. You'd have to pay me to own anything else .

I have a VTX 1800F model. I love it. If it would fit through my front door I would keep it in my living room. Since my wife left me I may try to work that out.

I really enjoy your video, lots of good Info. I just purchase a 2005 vtx 1800 f spec 3 with 6000 miles for $6000, it is in immaculate condition. I was very impressed with the torque and power. it came with Vance and Hines big shots and it sound amazing, and Honda reliability is unbeatable. I am very happy I made this choice, saved thousands of dollars. my friend bought a Harley this summer for $16000 and to tell you the truth when both stand next to each other the vtx should never feel less of a bike because of its price difference. I'm not hating on HD, but to me it doesn't make sense to pay for a bike what I can spend on a car. anyway, I enjoyed your video, and it helped me make my decision. now I'm just waiting for the season to start.

Nice video brother!!!! I have owned 2 1800vtx's . I bought my first in 2003 an 1800c I loved the bike but when my wife got pregnant I had to let her go, the good thing is I sold it to my father who put pipes on her and would let me ride her once in a while. In 2012 I was looking for another bike and found a 2008F in a Honda shop with one mile on it, of course I about wrecked the truck getting there to buy it. I have freedom performance ground pounders on her with a hypercharger. I wouldn't trade this bike for nothing!!!!

Great video, I think you should have touched base on Honda's evolving to the cruiser. Seems you've left out the Shadow, Shadow Spirit, V65, and so on. I did enjoy your presentation though. Thanks for posting! :-)

The VTX is a Great Bike , I love mine. My biggest problem is so much plastic , It shines up good But Plastic! And Its little cold nature , But once its warm, Its ready to go and go it will!

I enjoyed your video very much. It was very informative. However, I think you said that Honda started making the Honda VTX 1800 N Retro in 2005, but I have that bike and it's a 2004. I love the bike. I started out years ago with a Honda 750 Areo and I liked it very much; then, I got a Harley Fatbob in 2009 and I had lots of problems with it and it was very uncomfortable to ride. I then bought a Honda Areo 1100 and it was a fantastic bike, but I sold it and bought my Honda VTX1800 N Retro. This has been my favorite bike of all. It's a real keeper. Very sharp and very fast when needed.

Hello all. I have owned 2 VTX 1800C's and love(d) both. I had a 2002 and now an 03. Both have been flawless in performance and dependability! I also owned a Valkyrie (03 model out of Honda warehouse) which I wish I hadn't sold. Honda makes, in my opinion, the best bikes in the world...hands down! Enjoy your bike and ride safe brother.

What a great video. I own a VTX 1800 C and a VFR 750 both very unique and very special. I think I see a VFR (RC30) at the 02:30 point, did I hear CBR? No big deal as that's a great bike also. Thanks for the information compared to the other bikes. Good stuff.

Have an 06 R model. I love it. I just wish Honda would use nicer controls on these bikes. They are nearly identical to the rebel. It needs some Rune controls and less chrome plated plastic.

Does anyone know how much horsepower this bike actually has? I have heard everything from 85 HP to 107 HP. And if one would add a hyper charger air intake, power commander and different exhaust, how much horsepower would that add?

Honda is a serious contender no doubt...

Very interesting video.I am American.I own 3 Hondas; a Magna , a Shadow and a VTX 1300, which I just bought a few days ago. So far I like the bike but time will tell. It is interesting that Honda discontinued the Magna which was it;s muscle crusier from the early 1980s to mid 1990's. The Shadow has remained popular for more than 30 years but only comes with an 750 engine and is a bit under-powered compared to the Magna. I agree that Harley Davidson has a cult like attraction for Americans,especially in southern states I don't understand it,especially given that one could buy an equally powerful bike like a Goldwing for less money.

Good vid but the m109r is a Arlen Ness type look motorcycle nothing comparable in terms of ride comfort to the vtx1800 .you can add bags to the m109r bike and make it look beautiful ( look up Corbin or Tsukayu saddle bags) as for the vtx1300 since the bike is lighter and less powerful it doesn't need more braking power it's actually very decent for what it is..I'm happy to say I own all 3 and each one has its own characteristics the VTX 1800c stock shocks works fine for me ,setting 2 is good for riders about 220 lbs ( give or take) 3 is for heavier riders and or of you put bags on the next up is if you have a passenger and gear on your bike , winding Country Roads I loved on my stock shocks I just recently came back for a 1000 mile trip and had no issues, my m109r is a different beast it's great for a city or highway, but for long distance your arms will be hurting after an hour or so also don't forget it has a stock 240 rear tire, the vtx 1300c is more of that chopper feel it's lower to the ground has a lager yet narrower front wheel yet it's fun to drive you can also take this bike on a long trip and be comfortable just remember you have less power and it's carbureted.ill be honest I like them all and they each have a different feel to them but if you want an overall comfortable bike with loads of power the vtx 1800 is for you ..BTW another negative about the vtx1800 is the gas tank is not as large as it looks( look inside the gas tank and you will see why) I was getting about 120 to 135 miles per tank full. If I time my power commander more o probably can get more.

The HONDA VTX 1800 is a Magnificent Motorcycle, wonderfully reliable and durable. Harley Davidson has a history that begins in 1903 AMERICA, and is UNINTERRUPTED through today May 18, 2021. Those facts literally COMPEL a huge number of people to buy the Harley Davidson AIR cooled machines. The water cooled V-Rods were mechanically superior, and far more reliable, yet would not be strong sellers, and in fact were discontinued a few years ago.

Nothing wrong with VTX but... Japanese cruisers lack character. They are either "small" 400-800cc "small man's cruiser" kind of small potatoes or huge bloat machines similar to HD but zero character. Japanese cruisers are like a modern mustang v8 lots of power and refined engineering and zero character. HD is in tricky waters with the new M8 motor and people have complained that it is "too Japanese" because it is balanced to the point where it has no character. Some vibration and sound are very important in a cruiser. HD has two issues: 1. price 2. weight the kept getting bigger and more bloated compared with the bikes in the 70's. Overall, entire cruiser market overpowered and bloated - 2 wheeled SUVs.

Differences of the 1800 vs 1300 vtx..The 1800 was a double pin crankshaft engine and could not reproduce the American classic vee twin sound, However the vtx1300 was a single pin crankshaft, and therefore could produce the highly desired sound.

Would have been a better match to compare the Harley vrod to the vtx. Much more similar bikes.

Honda entered the USA with a very good range of Motorcycles in the early 60's which ranged from 50 CC to 305 CC...the Moped you showed was from the 70's Honda History is very different from your Portrayal of it.

Had a vtx1800 for many years sold it and bought a raider. Vtx is a awesome bike but lacks inspiration and aww. Too plain looking

the rumors are Honda was paid off by harly to stop making this bike (just a rumor) I owned a vtx1800 and loved it I now have a 1300vtx and love it as well ,I also own a m109r and the two bikes could not be more different..one is great for city or relaxing drives the other great for sprints and fast highway runs...suzuki doesn't have a problem with the clutch they have an issue with the trans. (2nd gear to be exact)
