REVIEW | London Seirei Tanteidan (1999, PS1) | A Japanese RPG Set in 19 Century England 

I can't believe this still doesn't have an english translation. Really, this should have gotten an official international release. These are themes and characters that just about anybody can connect to, and JRPGs were certainly profitable and popular at the time. I'm actually a little baffled that this has never made it out of Japan.

Hello, I’m currently working on a translation patch for this game. If anyone out there is fluent in Japanese and interested in taking part in the script translation, please feel free to reach out. I am currently working on the ASM modifications and hope to have a script dumped in the next few weeks.

After 30 episodes, I finally take a look at a proper Japan-only RPG. Sweet baby Jesus, it's a Christmas miracle!

Oh my god. This could so easily be rereleased today. Translate, clean up the weird artifact issues on the scanned backgrounds (who made this, Lucasarts and Sierra?!) And boom. Instant classic. I could understand if this was 3D and its harder to restore and sell a 3D game to modern audiences but this looks fresh even today! Im sure the professor layton crowd would love it.

I'd love to see a Tales of '98 by John Madden game. NA needs more football JRPG action RPG dating sims/visual novels

I've managed to beat the game even though I don't speak Japanese. I used google translator on my smartphone and I was literally taking picture of every single dialogue and text and I was selecting text (Japanese signs) and translated them on the fly. The method seems complicated but it is not. It's slowing down conversation parts by 20 or 30% because of constant picture taking but that is just about it. Sometimes that translator will roughly translate text very well, but for the most part it will have a various degree of success, but I was managed to understand what I needed to do to progress. And eventually, after several episodes in the game, I got to know the game mechanic and the way it plays (delivers quests and everything) so playing became easier. Luckily, the game itself isn't hard nor the battles are complicated so eventually you get to learn what section in menu does what. I really wish London in game is bigger with more buildings to enter. Also, some parts of the city were heavily utilized through many quests while others were probably once during the whole game. And rooftops are pretty much useless through entire game. You can walk on many rooftops but the quest forced you to step on the first rooftop maybe once and that is it. But nevertheless, it's a fun JRPG, and I really don't get why Bandai didn't localize it.. I mean, it's a game set in London, and nobody there speaks English? :D

Been going through these old videos to see which games, if any have gotten a patch by now, sadly this one isn't one of em ! Still great to rewatch though !

Nice Jimmy!!! And the protagonist really looks like Jimmy!!! This game blew me away!!! You know when we wish such a kind of game exists (London setting and all) and you stumble at something ALMOST THERE!! (I'm talking about you NOLSTALGIA!! Why? Why did you not used a nicely 2D sprite work like this game!!) And the music playing at the begining and end of this video melts my heart!!

Hi Jimmy!!!!! Here is me again!!! I somehow (thanks to God really) managed to find a way to playing this AMAZING game!!! I'm exploring the town after partner with my Buddy!! Loving it so much!! The downside is that I do not understand a word of japanese!! So I'm missing out the dialogue!! But the setting is fantastic and pulls me in every time a played it!! Another thing is the MUSIC!! Great and compeling all the way trough, helping imerse ourselves in the journey!! One music that BLOW my mind was the first dungeon music !!! So cool and atmospheric!! It is so damm good that I've come back to hear it again, but the music changed to the same town music that was playing before (witch is in itself so good to!!) Well, I wil just finished by saying two things!! One, This is my ALLTIME FAVE RPG in psx so far!! i do not care a bit about what people say!! It is like my favorite saturn RPGs (Tengai Makyou IV and Gulliver Boy!!) despite all of then being in japanese (the gist is about 20% understandeble, and in cutscenes it scales up to 60% I think!!) That is why I'm somehow trying to learn japanese!! The second thing is..... Where do I find the HAPA-VISION television???!! It seems to be a quality product trough and trough!! Strong BoF3 vibes with this aesthetically, beautiful game. If I didn't know what this was and only saw gameplay, I'd assume Capcom retained the license and made a Little Nemo RPG

I'm also one of those people that feels the golden age of RPGs was the PS1 era. There was some great stuff on the SNES and Genesis, but so many of my favorites were on the PS1. I really like the look and setting of this one, and it's really awesome that they added a Wayne's World reference and let you save anywhere. Really wish more games would let you do that. This one is definitely going on the wishlist.

300 pounds for a lemon tea! Even for London prices that better be some good tea! Good to see you can get those famous British favourites Lemon-pan and Cherry-pan from the pub! Well at least they got the sandwiches and roast potatoes right. Anyway this game looks great. Shame it didn't get a release outside of Japan.

I couldn't agree more, the Playstation 1 era had some really wonderful RPG's and it's a damn shame we didn't get this one as I feel it could've been a decent hit, if not a somewhat rare title that Re-Sellers would overcharge for. Fantastic RU-vid film-stuffs, Hapa-san! :D

Oh! Community POM is such a cute game! I really need to go back and give that one a proper playthrough now that my Japanese is better than when I first attempted it. Haha. I have watched someone play through it here on YT though. And another Alundra fan? Nice! It was one of my favorite PS1 RPGs back in the day, besides FFVII, of course. I really am digging the aesthetic of this game! You mentioned that you can save anywhere in this game, which reminds me that you can also do that in リトルプリンセス：マール王国の人形姫２. That game also has some interesting humor. Have you played it?

Man, this game looks sweet. Shame there's no translation patches available. PS1 had some of my favourite RPGs like Wild Arms and Suikoden. There's a load that never even made it to the UK though, let alone leave Japan. You do good work bringing games like this to our attention Jimmy. Now who we gotta petition to get this a western release on steam or something?

Hi Jimmy, another awesome video. (and of course another game I had never heard of and one I wanted, lol) Speaking of which tracking down a copy of this game is a bitch considering how cheap it is. I had to resort to searching for it in the original Kanji(?, correct me if I'm wrong about that) I managed to find it on Amazon using this 倫敦精霊探偵団 and got my copy for under $20. Keep up the great work, and I'll sit waiting patiently for the Valkyrie video that I hope to see one day. Oh, and I saw you talking about El Dorado Gate below, I was always interested in it and look forward to you reviewing the series one day if you decide to.

Even with the bell ticked I'm still not getting updates when they happen. :/ Anyway, this one really looks like something right up my alley. As a fan of 32-bit JRPGs and being a Brit I'd love to see how my country's culture and history are interpreted in that style. Plus I love the isometric sprites, the bizarre yet ordinary setting, and the unconventional heroes and villains. Can't find it on eBay atm, but hopefully I can pick this one up in the future, just need to get on with learning Japanese. Dunno where to start though, written language or verbal? Both are going to be a challenge but I can do the latter on the bus to work easily.

I feel in love with the look of this title last year after seeing some game footage but until today I had no idea what the story was about. Now I'm just angry at myself for being a lazy fucker who dosen't know Japanese. I want to play this sooo badly.

Hey Jimmy, have you done a series on The El Dorado Gate for the Dreamcast?

I dunno why, but I just lost it when "buddy" or "Aibo" gets run over by that lady exiting the room and just the idea of this little kid taking the abuse of everyone around him, like they don't even see him and he just shrugs it off. I'm only a third of the way in, and I think I regret never having played this game already.

Would be great if this was released in english. I like a short RPG.

Nice more great games ! Althought i have to say there is something odd about the game when it comes to the sprites and the background,they don't match well,the sprites are too vividly colorful while the background is more realistic and paler....still would play the game. Also the jokes felt kinda out of place,probably cause you didn't change the tone of your voice so they felt kinda awkward,blending with the rest of the smooth description of the game but other than that cool video,totally will watch again during summer break~

Wait, you have a hard time going back to JRPGs from the PS1 era? Seriously? I've played games like Threads of Fate, Parasite Eve, Grandia, Final Fantasy VII, and FF IX for the first time all within the past 5 years and really enjoyed each one. I was born in 1989 and was mostly a social gamer growing up so I missed out on a ton of great single player games. The PS1, N64, and PS2 were my childhood, and even just playing local multiplayer games with my friends was a blast.
