REVIEW: The Adventures of Robin Lloyd is an early title from Atelier series developer Gust on the PS1 that never left Japan. It's an action adventure and puzzle game that follows the adventures of the titular Robin Lloyd in 1920s London that has got a great sense of anime style and production value. It's quite the "hidden gem," as it rarely gets talked about in English or in Japanese.

After watching this video, I proceeded to purchase a copy of Robin Lloyd as quickly as possible (last time I waited on the London Spirit Detective game it skyrocketed in price) and I am so glad that I did! I am happy to report that as someone that has ZERO knowledge of the Japanese language, I was able to successfully play AND enjoy Robin Lloyd from start to finish. Thanks to Jimmy's video overview, I had an idea of the backstory and that is about all I needed! There were a few puzzles that I was stumped on due to the language barrier and for that I just looked up a video walkthrough to help with those parts. But I would estimate that I was able to play about 80-85% of the entire game on my own accord. Obviously it would have made for a better experience if I did understand the dialog boxes, but quite honestly, I don't feel like I missed that much! The characters are very expressive through their gestures and limited facial expressions and most of the puzzles can easily be understood through visual cues. The music was fantastic and the charm this game has is second to none. I'm honestly ok with the length of the game as well (it only takes about 2 hours to beat) because the older I get, the less time I unfortunately have to sink into games. If Jimmy's video heightened your interest in this game at all, I highly encourage you to go and get it! It's absolutely worth it and even though it's a short ride, it's a super memorable ride. I really hope that this game will return to the spotlight someday! And once again thank you to Jimmy for the excellent video as always...I love finding out about these hidden classics that I probably would have never found without your videos!!

My lord does this look charming. I would love to see a Japanese team - not necessarily Gust, as they really don't seem able to do much more than moe girl-centered games these days, but somebody surely can still do this kind of thing justice. MAN, those character designs really are just fantastic. I don't think it's been done in awhile, but I know I absolutely love this sort of "Anime London" aesthetic as I'll call it. I loved _Professor Layton,_ I loved watching the old proto-Ghibli anime _Sherlock Hound,_ I love RED Entertainment's _Nostalgia_ for the DS, etc. And I LOVED discovering that _London Spirit Detective Club_ game via your Import Gaming FTW videos, even if I will never get to play through it ;) So thanks for putting another endearing PS1 adventure on my radar. Congrats on hitting the big 4-0 as well with the series. I hope you're planning something special for Ep.50, whenever you get there... (^-^)

As always, gotta agree with what you say! And thanks for reminding me of Nostalgia, both the game and old anime stuff--I think I'll bring my U.S. DS copy back with me next time I'm in the States. Just imagine if that game was released on the Saturn as intended...whew, boy. Thanks for the kinds words, and I hope to hit 50 sooner than I would at the current rate I put out videos!

Oh that's neat! I never heard that before but it makes total sense! I mean, considering they did the _Sakura Taisen_ games for Sega and the Saturn needed JRPGs to compete with the PSX, I can TOTALLY see them targeting that originally. Aw man; that would've been crazy to see back then - probably would've gotten a lot more attention than as it currently does, wallowing in obscurity in the DS library. Thanks for the fun fact :)

Robin Lloyd is also available on the Japanese PS Store as a part of the PSOne Archives, too, which is where I first heard of this game. Glad to see this video made, because I thought it looked interesting, but was never able to really be able to tell what exactly it was about. While this doesn't necessarily make me want to grab it ASAP, maybe I'll consider it sometime in the future, now.

Fortunately been relying on Avalanche Reviews and Super Derek "Goh-Mon" RPGs for my video fix. A lot of companies were ditching their wheelhouses for full 3d action adventure games around this time. I remember feeling burned when Alundra 2 wasn't 2d. That being said, there's no 3d like ps1 era, low poly 3d!

The character design is right up my ally!!! It is like the older brother from Nostalgia (Winds Of Nostalgio) from DS!! (A game maded by my favorite Red Company alogside Taito and Matrix software!) A 3DS remake with a flashed out story in colaboration with LEVEL5 would be a dream come true!! Imagine Cell Shading revamp graphics in the vein of even an Inazuma Eleven or DQVII and VIII would be on point!! The setting seems so charming too!!

This game looks pretty awesome! Love the sound of the adventure game parts of the game; looking for clues, inspecting items and objects, sort of inventory puzzles. Shame it's a short one though. Great video Jimmy!! p.s. Don't know if I've ever told you this, but I love all the graphics and overlays you work into your editing. You've got a level of polish that I feel like I could only ever dream of having.

I love this channel, I can explore game's that never hit my land of Norway, I get the thrill of playing games as new on emulation or original console if I can get my sticky hand's on a copy off the t'internet also part of the fun is navigation of menu's when I can't read Japanese it's a mini game in it's own right!, Then again I am easily amused...

Awesome, glad to hear that! Let me know your thoughts on the game if you have the time. Also, sorry to hear about London Seirei Tantei-dan, just looked at ebay prices and...Jesus. It's not the easiest game to run across, but whenever I do, it's in the $1-5 range. I'll pick up a spare copy if I see one again. I just picked up Brightis not too long ago, actually, as it was something I've been interested in for a while now--it's pretty cool, as is anything from Quintet and/or Shade post Tenchi Souzou. I don't think I'll do a video on it, since the Ultra Healthy Video Game Nerd did a more than adequate job talking about it over on his channel. Maybe check out that video sometime?

this seems like an interesting game! unfortunately the closest thing I could find to a translation was a random blog post someone did translating the intro so... I suppose if they get the retroarch translation service working good enough that might be the way to play this one! (or if you're brave enough to try it in original Japanese, while I was looking it up I believe I saw it on PS3 PSN for download in Japan!)

Your production skills on this one were off the charts! The game looks like a real charmer, I don't think I'd be able to power my way through the puzzles with limited Japanese knowledge though. It was funny you mentioned the style similarity to Tail Concerto as that was what was going through my head while watching this. JESUS, HIDDEN GEMS FOR PENNIES lol, does that work?

Thanks, man--and funny you say that about "production skills," because I thought it might be the opposite compared to usual! The puzzles aren't too tough, maybe only two or three might be tricky without knowing what's being said or displayed. And if you give yourself to the lord the PlayStation One, you get hidden gems for your offering of pennies...that's how that works.

@@ImportGamingFTW It's quite tempting really. Seems to go for as little as £2.50 on UK ebay. Although it's bound to get a Jimmy Hapa price bump soon after people see this and demand rises. Luckily I have the old ps1 that had really weak region locking so getting it working would be real easy.

Only two chapters? That's a shame. It looks like such a cute game though. And with a pricetag like that, I'll try to hunt it down for sure. :D I don't really mind short games, but yeah, getting this back in the day for full price would've definitely been a disappointment. Especially without any real extras or replay value I guess. I'm actually surprised there's this much merchandise to be found for it. By the way, I'm sure you've heard about it, but Goemon's in Smash Bros. as a Mii Swordfighter costume, with his giant kiseru acting as the sword. It actually works surprisingly well. It's not the reprsentation I wanted, because the actual character with Impact as his final smash, along with a stage based on Oedo Town or something, and some awesome songs would have been awesome, but hey, at least he's in the game in some form, so I guess Konami hasn't forgotten about him yet. Maybe we'll get a Goemon collection like the one we got recently for Konami Arcade Classics, Castlevania, and Contra? I kinda doubt it, but it would be awesome. It's kind of weird how no Goemon game is currently part of either the NES or SNES game collection currently available for Switch Online members, which is the case for Castlevania and Contra as well (and we do have some Konami games in there, like Gradius and TwinBee). The 8 games I would probably choose and would make the most sense are 1 and 2 for the Famicom, 1, 2, and 4 for the Super Famicom, and Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu and Ooedo Daikaiten for the PS1. Maybe Shin Sedai Shuumei, that game was surprisingly good despite its kinda cringy, edgy character designs. And Sarawareta Ebisumaru for the Game Boy as well, that one was probably the best one of the Famicom game style.

I guess the problem with the PS1 library is that while it has the most interesting and varied library the graphics in all the 3D games really haven't aged well. A shame there isn't some import software that converts PS1 graphics into PS2 at the very least.

I've always planned on that game being my first "Halloween special," if you could call it that. Seems like a good game to play, although one you would need to know the langauge to fully enjoy. Is that a Lupin III reference I see with the title cards for the cases?

I think you can still enjoy the game with little Japanese language skills...probably with none at all, really. And I'm not sure if that's a Lupin the 3rd reference or not, but it probably is, as a lot of the visual and audio flair reminds me of Lupin...hell, even the cover with Robin holding the gun kind of makes me think of Lupin.

The game looks really fun, its just the character designs that are a little off-putting to me. Everyone seems so....smiley. :D

Yes, but I'll have to bust out the dictionary here and there either for kanji I don't recognize or phrases that I don't quite grasp. I should have studied more when I was young!

He is a very pretty boy. According to that fanbook, he was originally supposed to be 25, but they changed things last minute to give him more curiosity-seeking youthfulness...which adds to his prettiness.
