REVIEW: The Legend of Valkyrie, or Valkyrie no Densetsu, is one of Namco's most beloved arcade titles in Japan, and its titular heroine, Valkyrie, is one of the company's most popular characters. This fantasy based run-and-gun shooter with light RPG elements set game centers across Japan ablaze, but sadly that fire didn't carry over to international markets, as the arcade smash hit was sadly--and inexplicably--left in Japan.

This video has been such a thorn on my side for the past two months, I'm glad it's finally done with. A big NO THANKS to Viktor, who has the rights to a lot of old Namco game music, for giving me claims twice on this video, which would have blocked it in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. Third re-render/upload was a charm, I guess. This video, much like the one on Adventure, is quite humorless, because I felt it would be better to give this series the dignity it deserves rather than shoehorn in bad jokes that no one wants or needs. Next entry should change that a little bit, though. ;)

URGH. Victor is a pain. I don't get why they have auto-blocks on gameplay videos. They did that to a Pac-Mania video of mine as well. I just say that if it happens again in the future dispute it since Namco Bandai USA's EULA grants permission for youtubers to make videos of their games and monetize them, which should include games like this too.

Bravo, this is probably your highest quality production yet. I have the U.S. port on Namco Museum Volume 5 but I obviously didn't give it nearly enough time as I don't remember it being this awesome. Perhaps you're going to say it's a non-representative port in your next episode, however. Also, slide puzzle mini-games: possibly the worst thing ever.

Thank you--and I'll talk about it in the next episode in further detail, but the Namco Museum port is fantastic...I hope you'll give it another play sometime! And yes, slide puzzle mini-games are the worst. I think the first time I ever played them was in Bart Vs. the World for NES. All of that game's mini games were awful, but slide puzzles took it to another level, deep within the hellish depths of video game mediocrity.

OMG, yes yes yes. Bart vs. The World was my first encounter too as a child and I was equally traumatized. Imagine my horror years later when I collected the full set of NES games and bought a game called "Puzzle" that is nothing but slide puzzles, ack!!

Very informative thanks.I have this on Namco Museum Vol 5 for PS1, which I believe is the only time it was officially translated to English. There's something magical about this game, largely due to its wonderful soundtrack, which I can happily listen to all the way through.

Well done sir! It couldn't have been easy to get the details you did about some obscure franchise from the 80's. Ya mascot games, 1980's namco/konami/capcom/snk would just create a new character/ip and dump a bunch/most of their resources in the belief that the game/ip would catch on and be popular. Talk about rolling the dice!

Late to the game here but the arcade game looks really cool. I wonder how many games that debuted on NES/Famicom had an arcade sequel? Bucky O'Hare comes to mind and also Battletoads although that had other games in the series.

Damn this looks really cool, my first thought was, "looks like Pocky and Rocky" and then you made the same comparison. Been really interested to check out P&R, so my interest is really piqued on this one. Also, love your title card reveals. I know you love the editing process and it shows man, sorry getting this one out was such a pain though.

Ah, more Valkyrie goodness. ;) This one looks like quite the departure from the last game of the series you covered. I was going to mention the Pocky & Rocky similarity, but you mentioned that right away. That book with the back story to the game looks really cool. I like the artwork and how they tie in some of the other characters you bump into in the game. The game looks like some arcade-y fun. Great video, my friend! Can't wait for the next in the series. :)

Thanks Sam--yeah, this would have been a popular game for sure. I know I would have loved it. A shame I didn't have a chance to really experience this series until I was in my twenties...I was REALLY interested in the Namco Museum port when it was first released because the screenshots of the game looked so cool, but passed on it because PSM or some other magazine gave it a bad review. Such a stupid kid I was! XD

It's really cool that you found the arcade game! Though I would imagine Japan is full of old school goodness. I really know nothing of these characters aside from what I've learned in your previous video, and my time spent with Project X Zone 2 (which Valkyrie is actually in.) I had no idea how much story was here for an arcade game! Looking forward to the next video regarding the ports. Also, game looks super fun!

That arcade cabinet is actually a Gamest cab that has over 3000 of the best (and worst) arcade games from the 80s and 90s in it. Such a thing of beauty!

Thanks, bud! The PC Engine game is awesome, but it's different enough from the arcade original that I'd recommend playing/getting both. You can still download the arcade game on the Wii, if that's something you're into.

For a 1989 arcade game, it certainly is pretty impressive. Just a shame we didn't get to experience it in our youth--it would have been a big hit, I think. And don't worry about the question part, it's not a huge hurdle. "enjoyable till the last drop," you say? Well, I counter by asking you which body part that drop is secreting from?

It always feels like a holiday when there's a new episode of Import Gaming FTW! :) Awesome episode as always! It's masterfully written and wonderfully edited as usual. The game itself looks really fun as well. I was going to say that it did remind me of the Kiki Kaikai series, but I was almost entirely sure you were going to mention it. :D I'm really looking forward to the next episode, as this really looks like a game I would have a blast playing, especially in co-op with my girlfriend. I'm visiting Japan once again later this year, and I'll keep an eye out for one of the ports, probably Namco Museum Vol. 5, if it's not that expensive. I was somewhat interested in that series anyway. But maybe you'll tell me in the next video that that one is the worst, so I'm not so sure. :D I also still don't have Valkyre no Bouken yet, so that's one I should be looking for as well.

D'aw, you're too kind sir. If you find Namco Museum Vol. 5 in a Book-Off, it should only run you about 1500 yen, so you should be able to find a good deal on it. I'd also recommend looking for Namco Anthology Vol. 2, though you should expect to shell out between 3000 and 4000 yen for that one. Spoiler--Namco Museum Vol. 5 is the port I'd probably recommend most. ;)

Can you also do the review of PS1 ワルキューレの冒険時の鍵伝説 (Valkyrie no Bōken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu) It is remake of Famicom version (I doubt many gamers had remember that..) It feature only on Namco Anthology 2 (ナムコアンソロジー2) exclusive on PS1( kind of exported laterly on PS3).Quite special on remaster the original and given us more story background.

Of course there are arcade games from the era with more complex, deep game engines than this, but it its nice to have a bit of RPG depth in an action game. For myself, I can beat this game in three credits, so that's 300 yen there. I don't imagine anyone would have to spend more than ten bucks to beat the game.

Yep, Whirlo, which I hear is a very expensive game these days. The original Japanese version, Sandra's Great Adventure: Encounter with Valkyrie, is a really cheap and common game by comparison.

Quiet the story for such a game,everybody know that Valkyries before the new millennium didn't need any reason to get to earth and kick asses...but daaaaamn,the art and character design ,there is something about it i cant help but to admire. Even the bad guys are cute and even Kamus himself is all like...daaaa'hhh~ Probably wouldnt play the game cause of all those stuff on screen kinda gave me mini panic attacks and I am more into easy going platforming but would definitely steal your Valkyrie figures. I give this video a "good time video" out of "Ogres and little girls don't belong in the same game"....that's a good score,so keep going ^_^

May I commend you on your (to my ears at least) excellent japanese pronunciation? I guess you live over there as well as speak fluently. Still, many do and not everyone sounds so japanese. But not only that, also the pronunciation of that weird side character in the plot description with an eastern europe sounding name. It sounded spot on. xD But yeah, overall very very very well done videos. It should be illegal, that you have so few subs. I'll try my best to spread the word, but yeah... still not enough.

I don't know if I'm just imagining this or not, but I THINK I found a picture of an arcade cabinet a long time ago, but the pic was so tiny it wasn't worth using. Searching again for this video, I didn't find anything...I would have loved to have been able to show the real arcade cabinet or components. As far as the mobile games, I was totally down to download them and do videos on them, or at least mention them, but it seems that they've been pulled from the Android store.

your kidding, there is no way to get the mobile games? that suck. there are a few moblie game I have been looking for (ladystaker, athena full throtile and the valkyrie games). Is valkarie a rare arcade game? I ask because I cant fined images of it anywere, as well as other arcades like Athena, Phelios and other japanese arcade games.

Valkyrie deserves more but even if bandai Nanco will release something new it will be another clone of Zelda breath of the wild although it would be better to make your own character and partners of various races like in FF legend series or in your case Makaitoushi SaGa

It was a label they used for their home console releases, but I'm not sure exactly why. I feel like I looked it up and found the reason, but just forgot.

Haven't watched the port video yet, but I'm guessing the arcade version is easier then the PC Engine version. I have that version and thought it was really hard, maybe I just suck lol.

Ha ha ha, well, kuso is considered a curse word, but it's used very liberally and doesn't really hold the weight of "shit" in English. Most "curse words" in Japanese are like that...it's more context that affects how harsh/strong a word is rather than the meaning itself. At least in my experience, ha ha.
