Zvezda continue their unique range with the Maus German super-heavy tank kit. This gigantic kit has 18 parts and builds up into a fearsome behemoth, ready to strike fear into the hearts of Allies everywhere. In this episode of Fog of War we build it, look at the history, and even dig up some unofficial stats for fielding it in Flames of War.

That looks like a great model! I need to get myself a couple, if only to go with my Ratte. I would probably actually field them myself, but then I'll almost always choose novelty and silliness. Which the Maus looks to have plenty of.

It was a great build and these silly tanks are always a lot of fun. They were always listed as escorts for the Ratte, so that would be a sight to see!

May get this kit to use as an objective for my 2nd irish guards to fight for in games, yeah the Russians found it, but since my Irish guards can potentially face other allied units etc.... there won't be much of a historical problem

There is the unofficial stats, but I can't see Battlefront including this in the game officially any time soon...

Built two and realised that the part A1 is what creates the unsightly gap at the front plate and affects the construction slightly. Found if you leave that part out totally and fit the side skirts first to the tracks and then put the hull on it fits perfectly and there is no gap and it does not affect the kit. Apart from that I love the kit and it is a superb addition to German forces for 'what if' games

Is that the internal connector thingy? That is the piece that seems to force issues with fit, so I suspect leaving it out if you are gluing the kit would work OK.

A video game tank long before video games were invented... It will be interesting comparing your stats to the ones it will get in "Clash of Steel".

Yeah. Those were the Late War Leviathans fan-made stats of the time. It will be interesting to compare.

Looks like a lovely kit. But the problem is as you said. Its over the break point for when armor is useful and turns into a liability instead. A interesting vehicle but not nearly as good as a King Tiger or a Panther

Yep. I guess that's why post-war tanks went for the MBTs and the Heavy tank concept just died off.

Well the British had the chieftain as sort of a heavy support tank, but then again it wasn't so much a heavy tank as a assault gun with tank characteristics.

Chieftain was an MBT - big and heavy but a standard tank. Are you thinking of Conqueror? The Brits used Conqueror and the US had the M103 Heavy Tanks, but as MBTs became more capable these were withdrawn from service.

Ah you are correct, i miss remembered the names. Yes and in doctrine they where different from the Heavies of WW2, they where no longer breakthrough tanks but support platforms with higher firepower to counter the russian heavy tanks, but since the russians ended their heavy tank program their usefulness quickly fell off.

It's all those tank names starting with "C" from the British. A hangover from the old "cruiser" tank days! But you are right about the roles changing. The heavies post-war were designed to mount bigger guns, but as MBTs started mounting the same calibre of guns, heavy tanks were just liabilities.
