When it comes to death metal, it's all about the -ations for ya boi here. Incantation, Suffocation, and Immolation... the later of which this episode is all about. They're maaaybe my favorite death metal band depending on which day of the week you ask me, and they've put out a gosh darn truckload of great albums over the years, and I did a really exhaustive retrospective of their discography, so give this one a listen, you goof!
I cohost this wacky podcast, bringing you all the news the LAME STREAM MEDIA doesn't want you (the people) to know about (and by that I mean it's all goofy news stories about public nudity and alligators eating people). hatebus.libsyn...

Immolation is phenomenal and underrated asf. Probably my favorite “OSDM” band.

One of the best death metal bands out there, clearly top 10 for me. They also slay live, Robert's antics are just awesome and Ross is the man. I saw them with Marduck a few years ago and they were just awesome, blew the later out of the water. I have to say that Marduk had an absurdly good sound live and at least the played Wolves and Materialized in Stone (I know, that one steals a lot from to enter the infernal fire from Bathory, but it's a great song).

My favorite podcast, even on an episode like this where you cover one of my favorite bands I still discover some new bands and you shed some light on albums I don't listen to as much such as "Shadow of the light"

That album blew my mind when it came out. I know a lot of people got into Immolation with Majesty and Decay but for me Shadows is the peak of the latter half of their career along with the Providence EP.

I thought heard of Immolation when reading an interview with Cannibal Corpse and Alex Webster said they where his favourite Death Metal band. I thought "well if they are good enough for him they are good enough for me" Karl Sanders sung their praises too. They are the band I see getting the most praise from fellow bands. All we need is Eric Rutan to produce one of their albums Is There a way I can contact you privately? I would love for you to come on my podcast 🤟

my first listen to immolation was close to a world bellow which was the actual (newest) album back when i listened to it, when they play something live from it i usually tend to get very lively unlike the other productions

Still need to listen to them. Anti-Christianity is overdone imo tho. Its far more controversial to have anti jew or anti muslim lyrics.

Yeah, their lyrics don't really fit the super-dark atmosphere they're going for, but the music and the vocals are exceptionally solid.

Lengendary DM band. One of the pillars. Still active, still killing it live. Monumental albums, especially UNHOLY CULT which is the pinnacle of their Trilogy. Once again they end the album with one of their fabulous long & despondent songs… Classic Immolation. Saw them live 4-5 times I think

There was a theory going round in the UK music press in the early 1980s that any band whose name ended in -er was bound to fail or at least not get 'big', and on the whole it proved to be prophetic.

Props for giving Shadows In The Light praise. I honestly feel that album is way too overlooked and underrated. I honestly think it's the last great Immolation album. Everything after that got too polished.

Yeah that's wacky ol Matty Fox, some pretty funny stuff. I actually haven't heard Excrement but looking at it now, I've definitely seen the album cover. I'll give it a shot since I like a lot of that weirder Finnish stuff like Euthanausea and Vomiturition and what not

I got that Excrement EP on now, the lead guitar reminds me a bit of Depravity. I'm actually enjoying this quite a bit, didn't sound like what I expected it to sound like. I think I had the cover mixed up with that first Defleshed EP. There was that old Swedish band called Excretion... I'm not sure what the deal is with kinda melodic bands naming themselves after poop.

Too bad you glossed over Unholy Cult. That's where they started to shift style/sound. Album feels cold and songs about self reliance and politics instead of mostly anti-religion. Unholy Cult is underrated in their catalog and better than Harnessing and Shadows where they kinda fumbled around mixing old/new styles with whispered vocals. Maybe you started with Shadows and worked your way back. All Immolation albums own making it hard to give even their weak albums like Harnessing less than a solid B grade.

It's been years but I think the first one I heard was Close to a World Below, saw it as someone's avatar on a forum when I was maybe 15. Unholy Cult I do like but I haven't listened to it nearly as much as the old Hernandez albums or the debut, probably should give it another spin

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 For me they tried to streamline their sound on Harnessing and Shadows. Then on Majesty and Kingdom they convoluted their ideas, and Atonement comes off as an excellent hybrid of old and new styles to reach a somewhat broader fanbase. They never should've opened for one album wonder, Mayhem, a few years back. Keep up the excellent work. Don't start doing reviews for Grave Miasma or something else cool.

Hell yeah, they're amazing. I've been meaning to do an Agatus episode at some point to go along with the redo of the Zemial episode I did a while ago. The Eternalist is one of my favorite modern albums. I've hung out with Archon Vorskaath a little bit since my buddy set up a Zemial show here a few years ago.
