According to tradition, the sage Vyasa, a character in the epic, first narrated the Mahābhārata to Vaishampayana, who then recited it to King Janamejaya at a snake sacrifice. The Mahābhārata is an ancient Indian epic poem that is considered one of the most important texts in world literature. It is believed to have been composed in the 4th century BCE or earlier and is made up of 100,000 verses. The story takes place in the Indian subcontinent and surrounding areas and includes the Bhagavad Gita.
The Mahābhārata is told using a story within a story structure, known as a frame tale, which is common in many Indian works. The first section of the epic states that Ganesha wrote down the text as Vyasa dictated it, but scholars believe this was added later and is not included in the "Critical Edition". According to Testbook, Vyasa may have approached Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, with the request to write the epic, knowing that Ganesha is known as the remover of obstacles. Ganesha agreed, but only on the condition that Vyasa would dictate the story without pausing, and that he would understand each verse before writing it down. Vyasa would dictate the epic continuously, and when he needed a break, he would compose a complex verse to give Ganesha time to think about its meaning.
