Power can be gained by applying the maxim "might make right", which we know is not true. For example, if a Republican in the NRA receives a large sum of Rubles and then reinvests the millions in the GOP for a Presidential election, they are breaking the law by allowing a foreign power to fund a Presidential election. Some believe it isn't a crime until it is discovered and found to violate the law by a jury of their peers. By my "pure rules", they broke the law at the time the crime was commited. This kind of cheating is rampant today. The GOP resorts to using handsome, well-spoken men to claim bald-faced lies (think crowd sizes) to call poor-quality products as the best that has ever been seen in the world, possibly in history. Technically a politician lieing is not breaking the law. By my reckoning knowingly lieing to the American public is cheating in an under-handed cowardly way. Once, the GOP had brilliant policies and communicated them in the public arena for the public to make an informed decision. They used to win playing by the rules of the game, by applying sportsmanship. Today the GOP claims describing their policy would lessen their ability negotiate a great deal for the "forgotten man". Truth is that the public would run them out on a rail if they knew the ultimate goal. If you want to consider your issue with gaming and purity, please feel free to do so.

@ Is "winning" the goal? I think you have to look at what the real goal is, which I would argue is not winning but winning in order to get the society you want. If you "win" and place someone in there who is going to strip you of rights, democracy, and damage the country's integrity, ability to do business with others, destroy the middle class, normalize corrupt behavior, normalize social polarity and hatred... I would say you are kidding yourself if you think THAT is "winning". You really aren't winning anything at all other than your own destruction and living in a world you will hate. Yes, they DID. All the voter suppression stuff(voter ID, etc) only counts in states where that became an issue. The GOP won thousands of elections(remember the big "shellacking" when they took half of Congress?). They won mid-terms, they won at the state level and the federal level. The only things they lost were stuff like the White House(when Obama got re-elected). The result: Trump got to spend a couple of years with near-total control over 2 branches of govt. and all the idealists on the left were powerless to stop anything he did. As he said: The right wants to win elections(which gives them the power to do things), while the left keeps trying to win arguments(which doesn't matter if you don't win elections and worse, when trying to win an argument has you doing things that cost you the election...it winds up looking like you lost both the election _and_ the argument in the eyes of voters.

@@54tisfaction You're not understanding what I'm saying. I'm not even contesting that the GOP pulled all kinds of shady stuff(gerrymandering, etc), but they couldn't do that everywhere. One of the biggest problems on the left has always been turnout, particularly in elections that aren't national(ex. POTUS). Gerrymandering, etc can explain major losses in some parts of the country, but not others. The GOP goes for *total* victory. Gerrymandering doesn't explain how people like Scott "F the Unions" Walker repeatedly won in one of the most pro-union states in the country. It doesn't explain voters allowing the same party that used unemployment benefits as leverage to take both Houses of Congress. It is just a fact that while yes, gerrymandering and other schemes have done some damage, the bulk of the damage has happened because too often, the left simply doesn't stay engaged after new Presidents are chosen. In fact, in 2016 we saw what happened when the left didn't show up for that, either.

I think it’s the “play to win” mentality. He will destroy a good policy and make people scared of it if it suits the end goal, rather than help provide objective truth about the pros and cons. He is saying he’ll run smear campaigns not caring about the actual truth or what he believes, it’s a campaign that makes people feel how he wants them to feel to accomplish a larger goal. He admits to manipulating people to get a win. He will vote for something he doesn’t believe in if it means getting a win. And I think in his mind, the end goal is important (and right) enough to justify that, but it seems kind of icky to operate that way as it’s not something a totally moral person would do. And it feels like he’s downplaying how important individual policies are for those affected by it. Saying you’ll run a smear campaign on healthcare to get to a larger goal feels kind of shitty when you think about how many casualties that leaves along the way, and how many people you have to step on.

Moss Linden, would you take that further and say that Trump is not merely saying out loud things that are quietly believed by not only the broader GOP, but in fact by a sizeable part of the American public? One of the more disturbing things I’ve learned about the phenomenon of Trump, since he was elected (I knew almost nothing about him before that), is that he is merely a canary in the coal mine, and the toxic gas he is alerting us to is spread through much of the GOP. And a major implication there is that even when he’s gone, the problem hasn’t gone. But now I see it’s far worse than that. The source of the toxic gas isn’t even the GOP itself. It’s a large chunk of the American people themselves. Of course at that point I have to stop calling it “toxic” because my respect for any set of political policies is lower than that for the democratic process itself. So if enough people want the kind of thing that Trump has brought - even if there aren’t enough to win an election - I can’t (or won’t) just dismiss them as bad or stupid. To be clear, I think both _Trump_ and _Trumpism_ are bad *and* stupid, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to all his followers.

Yes and no. It resembles a game with rules, strategy, and an outcome. Campaigns lend themselves to being talked about in that way: games as metaphor. But his discussion of the consequences of another Trump term make it very clear that while this is a contest, it is no game.

I think they are sincerely terrified for the country and if they want to help us oust Trump and Republicans that’s fine with me. However once we do we can never let Republicans of any kind get power again.

Jorge Galvão He’s saying that the “meta” of elections, so to speak, is to win the election, not to be the most morally upstanding. He’s saying that the Democrats should swallow their pride on the left wing issues that scare off moderates and focus on getting the votes, because that’s how they’re going to win. But they ARE playing by the rules. The rules allow for - even demand - gaming the Electoral College, and it got Dolt45 a "win." It's like when you need to park in an illegal spot to keep your job (or win a million dollars, or whatever,) the cost of the ticket is something you simply build into your strategy. If breaking Rule X *disqualifies* you from winning (because the rules say so explicitly and will be enforced,) then you find another way to do it. We need better rules, and the certainty that they will be enforced properly (you also lose if they get applied when they shouldn't, like with Federal Income Tax.) @@jejunestar9318 they worked in 2018. You run to win the race, district, or state. There's no such thing as a national race. So you have to break it down and win votes in pockets, clumps, and lumps. Swing votors are a small minority but they swing elections. Especially when young voters and inconsistent voters are never reliable. Except to disappoint.

Gerrymandering is simply one tactic in a strategy the Republican party has been executing for decades. You're only viewing this through a narrow window when the picture is much larger and even more disturbing. Yes, gerrymandering like the GOP has succeeded at is nothing short of unAmerican and unpatriotic and a betrayal of the Constitution, but the way they got to where they are today involved much more. From conning evangelicals to most recently our blue collar workers, their strategy requires much more than just gerrymandering and their is no denying they're plans have worked so far.

Politics is very grey area and u need to understand it to its core w experience. Warren n bernie are more qualified bcuz they have been in politics for many years now. You already have a president elected who has no prior experience as politician n has admitted that the work as president is alot than he had thought. Yang has good intentions but he wont be able to fulfill half of the things he promises bcuz others will have influence over him that will eventually stop him n find himself a pool of coruption.
