Ricky and Roscoe do actually like each other. Despite all their back and forth bickering I get the feeling that Ricky is the only one Roscoe can really relate to and talk to. Which is why they always argue because they know there won't be any hurt feeling long term between the two.

Best advice for a young man starting out in any line of work, but especially the trades... "Nobody cares. Work harder." Leave all your outside life at the gate. It'll still be there to pick up when you walk out at the end of the day.
