Karl Pilkington is the type person that, with his skewed view of the world, and his imagination, will come up with some amazing scientific theory in physics or something that blows all our minds. Then we'll see pictures of him sticking out his tongue. Breakthroughs come from the imagination.

Funny you should say that, as Louis CK is my favourite American comedian, I had Lucky Louie Shipped over, because it was never on in Britain, but why would it be? it's really funny. But yeah, Ricky Gervais also lead the way to Louis for me, so Gervais is kind of like a gateway comedian like how a bit of could eventually wind up to you blowing a guy for a gram of cocaine. Haha, yeah, I've seen most of Louis' stuff. Very entertaining. I also like it when he is on this show, he fits in great.

It's brilliant about the giraffe, because now we know that giraffes use their lengthy necks for male sparring purposes, and that they actively crane downwards to eat low-hanging leaves and fruit. In his own way, Karl was right yet again!
@WarKoreanZombie
@WarKoreanZombie 12 лет назад
There are no confirmed theories on why Giraffes evolved long necks. To eat from the tops of trees, and fighting for male dominance/female attention are the two most common hypothesis. Some biologist suggest it was a combination of both.

I don't believe it was named after the sound it made, possible it didn't even make a sound, there wouldn't have been anything surrounding the universe for the sound waves to bounce off of, unless we're talking about sounds that occurred within the expanding universe rather than sounds from that particular event. Still though....clever statement my friend ^_^

@jaymiddleton1782
@jaymiddleton1782 7 лет назад
The answer is that there was no intention. It was coincidence. Of course if your neck is longer you can reach more leaves, and if you can eat you don't Starve. Eventually it's only long necks left. They didn't grow longer necks with the intention of reaching higher leaves, just like we didn't develop opposable thumbs with the intention of holding a pen. It just works out that way.

Transcription, "Karl -what happened before the big bang? Ricky -Nothing. Karl -There must have been something. Ricky- There wasn't." How is that putting words in his mouth? The only fact there is that Ricky is saying there is nothing before the BB. Im just saying for him to assert that so definitively is not right. Is that so hard for you to grasp? He hardly stated it that definitively. He didn't say "I know there was nothing before the big bang." He just said that there was nothing before the big bang. Which I think you'll find is what the vast majority of the scientific community would also tell you as opposed to prefixing their every answer to the topic with "Well according the big bang theory". If you have another theory about how the universe then fine but there's no reason to nitpick. Especially when there aren't any actual nits.

Karl's way kind of leads to truths, unintentional but brilliant. "Why don't giraffes build ladders?" explains nothing about giraffes or evolution of giraffes, it does however explain why humans are not evolving physically - we invent our way out of the selective pressures as often as we can.

ok....here's the thing.....matter exists in space and bends space and space has all these properties.....but if space is the necessary framework within which matter relates, and is itself filled by a soup of dark matter and sub atomic particles....isn't there a level of emptiness or nothingness that is beyond the level at which physicists describe space? I.e. isn't Karl right if we take his definition of space charitably? I reckon Heidegger and Sartre would back me up on this.

Actually Ricky's last explanation about the giraffe is not Darwinism (in Darwinism mutations are random), it's Lamarckism (the idea that we develop organs for certain purposes).
@lemmypop1300
@lemmypop1300 9 лет назад
But random mutations can produce the same effect. Those who are in possession of those traits that allow them easier access to food or make them resistant to certain illnesses etc. are usually more successful in passing their genes to the next generation. Ricky probably understands this, but he is not a scientist; hence, he isn't really good at explaining scientific ideas.
@cleoz9274
@cleoz9274 9 лет назад
***** It has to do more with fact that he used the infamous giraffe example, which in the 19th century was used to ridicule Lamarckism for it's deterministic and purposeful ideas. Or how Aristotle used the 'idea of a cow eating grass on an idea of a field' to poke fun at Plato. So it's not even what Ricky said, but more like the example that he used so nonchalantly is a historically laden example which biologists rarely mention just because it's in bad taste as it points to a chain of bad ideas and misconceptions that early biology was filled with.
@cleoz9274
@cleoz9274 9 лет назад
***** Would you use migration patterns of Jewish and Semitic tribes as an example when talking about human migration patterns in general? I wouldn't. Thanks to mister Goebbels, and films like Der ewige Jude. Same thing with the giraffe example. It has been historically compromised to talk about it seriously. I mean, you can talk about it seriously, but after explaining yourself a bit more. That's it.

mathematics should not define cosmology, but should be able to explain observations. for things that patently cannot be observed, e.g., black holes, any math leading to them must be considered as not modeling reality unless observations confirm that it does, which leaves black holes in the dark permanently, along with their fairy-tale cohorts, dark matter and dark energy. caveat emptor, randychimp

Sorry Ricky, but plenty of stuff was going on in M-Space prior to the big bang. BUT, all that existed BEFORE time and space was created. There was all sorts of shit going on in the 7 dimensions of our WHOLE universe, a long time before our universe began. So all that stuff was/is outside of our frame of reference, because "time" and "space" have no meaning prior to the big bang.

And for you to say scientific theory is as close to fact as anything is vague and untrue. Phrenology was valid scientific theory in previous times. I think you'll find that's the biggest load of bollocks out there.

I'd love someone to explain the big bang to me. Nothing turned into something (in fact, everything). The universe expanded to a huge space FASTER than the speed of light. It is NOT travelling at anywhere near the speed of light now, but it is now accelerating. WTF???
@reinforcedpenisstem
@reinforcedpenisstem 9 лет назад
It can't be explained in a RU-vid comment because it is complex. If it were an easy explanation, the religious might then understand what they were arguing against.
@curiousmind5632

The space expanded faster than the speed of light, but objects within space can't move through space faster than the speed of light. (Distant areas of space are still expanding away from us faster than the speed of light, and in that space are stars that we'll never be able to see because the space between us and them is expanding faster than light can travel!)
@BeerGogglesReviews
@BeerGogglesReviews 9 лет назад
curious mind No, that doesn't work. If the space between two objects is expanding faster than light, then the slowest something can be going would be at least half that. If A travels from B at half the speed of light, then C must be travelling away from A at double that. So what about X, Y, Z, etc along that line? Also, what is space? If it is empty, then how can it expand into nothing? If it is something, then how can that travel faster than light?

***** OK mate I weren't there. If there was a singularity, it also would surely need to come from somewhere wouldn't it? Merry Christmas though mate.
@CharlemagnePalace
@CharlemagnePalace 9 лет назад
BeerGogglesReviews Nope, as far as we know energy can only change form, not be created or destroyed truly. Saying "it must have come from somewhere" doesn't really apply here, because before the Big Bang time and the laws of the Universe are so fundamentally different from what we understand now that even the concept of something having a start or end (even just a conversion of matter or energy 'starting' or 'ending' the way _we_ describe things starting and ending) might not even apply. That's why science can't really examine beyond, or say anything about what happened before the Big Bang because there's no way for us to even begin to be able to test it. I might be wrong, but currently science can't examine past the Planck time, so nothing definite is said about it at all, and certainly not that it's "nothing", Ricky was wrong. This isn't even a good analogy, but if you want to slightly understand what that might be like, imagine if you were working on a toolbox with a screwdriver, and the toolbox is sitting in a shadowy corner where you can't see it, and everytime you went near it with the screwdriver, the screwdriver turned into the concept of love. Now tell me how you fix the toolbox.
