The fourth video in my Ricoh GXR series covering this amazing and unique camera system. The Ricoh GXR A12 50mm f2.5 macro module is a fantastic lens in a small package, and besides the M mount module, the one I wanted the most to try. And it really is amazing. Optically at least. And the 12mp sensor performs well, at least for the age. But there's some things that are not so great, andI go over my thoughts in the video. Let me know what you think and if you have any questions about it!

I liked the GXR 28 and 50 so much that when the first body bricked after intensive use, I bought two more bodies. The lenses, particularly the 50, are exceptional, and the colours are punchy and vibrant. The macro mode is highly useful, too. Ricoh ergonomics are among the best out there, with matte, grippy surfaces, all the buttons where you want them, and grips that feel right in the hand without being overly large. The bad bits: autofocus is kind of slow, and shot to shot time is long. The buffer fills up after only a few images and you can't take more pictures until the buffer is empty.

Wow, those images are gorgeous. There’s something so pleasant about the way it renders green tones, especially in the leaves of the trees. I’ve always been fascinated by this system!

It does make some pretty images. Definitely a cool system! Stoked I've been able to play with it as much as I have.

Excellent review Snaps! I enjoy seeing how these older digital hold up! Great find and seems still a valid camera for specific occasions!

Thank you for the video, I took this module out from my old box and try it again. I love this 50mm module, plenty sharp and beautiful color rendering. The focus is a little bit hunt, maybe a lack of transmission signal from module to the camera body. I used light press shutter to pre-focus at some distance, and then hard press shutter to use snap focus. I think the len is less hunting that way. It is a macro lens after all.

Fabulous video! Thank you! Long time GXR fan, although I only have the A12-M mount (three of them actually).

Stocking up seems like a good idea... they seem to be harder to find nowadays. Right now I just have the M mount and this one. I really enjoyed the A16 module but just didn't use it very much so sold it. Now I'm kinda kicking myself just because they're tough to find.

Great review! I picked up one of these specifically because it’s pretty much the easiest and cheapest way to get a hold of an ir-converted camera. Bought one with the 28mm ffeq lens, then got an ir-converted module on eBay for around $100. Fun little camera! Hoping to get the little evf that goes on it too, but they cost more than the rest of my kit combined!

I bought the EVF and sold it after a few months. I was using it for manually focusing with my M mount module and vintage lenses, but it just wasn't that much easier than just using the rear LCD. If it were cheaper it may be worth it, but at the current prices - yikes!

Thanks for reviewing this is the one module I don’t have that I’d be interested in, the 24-85mm module is a really nice combo beats my Lumix GX80 w/Leica 12-60 combo for stills hands down for me the difference is the glass Pentax/Ricoh really don’t get the credit they deserve for their optics. Will be selling the GX80

It's been interesting seeing your side by sides. Optically this module really is nice. It's too bad it's the A12 instead of A16 sensor like that 24-85, but it still holds up. That A16 is great though.

I know how you feel. I have always liked the Olympus e 20N. I also like the Nikon P7100. There's just something about the nostalgic cameras that I just enjoy. I shoot with older cameras. Fujifilm x-e1, and nikon P7100. I love the way the images look. Reminds me of my film days with my Nikon D200.

I really enjoyed my Olympus e20n! I sold it only recently to fund another fun camera, but it was really good and a joy to shoot with.

I love my Ricoh GXR! I have the A12 M mount module - so I can use any vintage lens I can find a converter for. The only thing I don't like about the camera is trying to use focus peaking in bright sunlight. I need to get the eyepiece but they are rather expensive :/
@snappiness
@snappiness Год назад
I bought the viewfinder and ended up selling it after a few months - I just didn't think it helped that much honestly. I don't know if it was because the resolution was low, or the way that the peaking works in the camera, but it felt just as hard. Some people sware by it though

If you want to try a rather amazing old digital camera I suggest the Canon G10 15 mpixel camera. If you use it for landscapes it does a truly amazing job. If you use it with care on people, say posed, you can use not only the built-in flash but it has a hot shoe and works wonderfully with that. Since the sensor is small if you shoot wide open or near that the lens is very sharp and the zoom is excellent. Really good value camera. It cost nearly $500 dollars when released. Feels like a film camera and like old film cameras no info in the viewfinder just a little odd light that may catch your eye for slow shutter speeds. Has full manual controls, live view on the screen. Not great for highlights, or low light. But it really works well, not for moving subjects unless you trap correctly.

Great tip, thanks! I do eventually want to try a G series camera. I grew up with the cheaper Canon point and shoots so I think I'd like it.

THIS! I CAME TO COMMENT JUST THIS! i've only been shooting for 6 months and the G10 was a gift, and i absolutely love it. the more i learn about photography the more i fall in love with using it, the presets are really fun to use (my favourite is the positive film preset) and its been nothing but reliable and a joy. got mine for £90, so probably about 110 freedom eagles :)

I can confirm that a 35mm-ish macro is very nice on APS-C - I got the 35mm Limited recently and have been using it on my K-3 ii. To me it's like a normal lens of that versatile 50mm equivalent field of view, combined with the option of going as close to your subject as possible.

@@fricki1997 its so sharp I'm sure it does an excellent job on that field as well; the macro capability does help too of course. But it does so much more. I have the 20-40 ltd, the 50-135*, and the 35mm macro outperforms them both in IQ. Yes, you *should* use it more!! 😂

Been hearing about this lens for years now :) one of these days I'll try it. I just recently picked up the 35mm da plastic fantastic and have really been enjoying that one
@XXX-vy6xv
@XXX-vy6xv 2 года назад
@@snappiness the only issue I have with mine is that due to the long focus throw it takes long to focus while in liveview. It does much better while focusing through the viewfinder though!! Other than that its excellent and the 1:1 macro is a welcome plus, although 35mm is not so helpful if you want to get close to anything that moves. The plastic fantastic is supposed to be a very good lens of course (based on the older 35mm FA lens if I'm not mistaken?)...maybe you could do a comparison some day 😃

So I guess this is the third GR, along with the 18mm GR and the 26mm GRx. All we need now is a 50mm GR (or module - was there a 50mm module?) and you could have a whole kit lens worth of GRs, one in each pocket.
@snappiness
@snappiness 2 года назад
A true pocket 33mm would be nice, this one really isn't pocketable. And then there aren't any longer primes than this in GR world except with teleconverters. There is the 16-85mm APSC zoom module though.

Was this on the final firmware? I don't remember the AF being that bad on the 33. I also remember there was an additional button you could hold down when doing manual focus that would cost the manual focus to rack faster.
@snappiness
@snappiness 2 года назад
I'll dig through and try to find that option! That would be really helpful. It is on the latest firmware. I do shoot mostly in lower light situations, early in the morning, in the evening, indoors. So that could be part of it too. In bright lights it's still slow, but pretty accurate. My experience at least.
@johnbudd5526

Hold down macro button while turning focus ring, it flies. It’s one thing I believe is very well executed on this module, though others have commented it should be reversed, ie default on high speed, hold macro button to slow down, but I like it just the way it is thank you very much. Enjoyed your review, too.
@snappiness
@snappiness 2 года назад
@@johnbudd5526 Thanks! That's super helpful. I'll play around with it. I don't mind that it defaults to slower because especially for macro that's what you want it on.

3:37 You get less background blur not because it's 33mm but rather because it's an APS-C sensor and you have to multiply the crop factor to the aperture, in other words it's equivalent to 50mm/f3.75 full frame.
