*I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*
Don't you dare make this channel into a dry, humorless destination for us smart home frustrated users! There are other channels for that. Oh, the Zigbee! Corporate GREED!
I agree with @parrotm76262, I watch your channel, because you help us smart home users not feel so overwhelmed, you keep Jeff Bezos at bay, and more importantly you know exactly how to make us laugh!
I am red/green colour blnd (and can't see many shades of the blue/purple range, maybe I shouldn't have taken that job at Philips doing colour grading? 😂
When I first discovered your videos my first thought was that all the "funny stuff" was really pretty cheesy. But as I watched more of them I have to admit, they're actually quite entertaining. As a decades-long-term sufferer of clinical depression, I rarely smile and laugh even less. But watching your videos I find myself often smiling at the humor, and dare I even admit it, actually giggling at times. Btw, for extra context, I'm 60 yrs old! You're a funny man, with a real talent for creating entertaining content. It must take ages for you to edit all of your footage, let alone figure out where you're going to insert animations etc and then add them it, and then cobble the whole lot to get to the end-result. Thanks so much for taking the time to make your videos Paul!

One thing I noticed: when you compared the brightness of the bulbs, you did it at 90 degrees. The Linkind bulbs have a spherical diffuser compared to the flat end Hue, which might have made that 90degree angle test unfair.
The lux meter is measuring the light in the same way the human eye would perceive it. If hue have made their diffuser in such a way that the light is brighter from one angle than another then I think this test would perfectly demonstrate that this was a design flaw and that people shouldn't buy it. 🤷
@@paulhibbert true, but at the moment it's possible that the Hue is outputting the same amount of light or more than the other bulb overall, but we don't know. Also: this could mean that Hue bulbs are brighter than the other bulb when used as a downlight.
I am tempted to buy these bulbs and went to Amazon(.ca) to check them out, and the prices were considerably higher. The two pack was $37+$6 fee. That's a lot more expensive than a pair of Hue bulbs. Even if I remove the $6 fee, it's still more expensive than Hue.
Paul, thank you. I do enjoy your videos - both interesting and funny :-) Having recently moved home I am building a Smart Kingdom ... and am on the verge of splashing out on a lot of smart GU10s so your video is really opportune. Could I ask you to consider one thing when you do you light tests.... to also do a minimum lumens test as well. I have some GU10s and their minimum is pretty bright - this can mess up one's efforts to create just the right ambiance. I look forward to your next video. #staysafe
Don’t stop with the goofy moments Paul. That’s what makes your channel more interesting. I tend to use, ooh Apple. Corporate greed. The Zigbee thrusting had me in stitches.
My automation is more and more Node Red based and I have to say the eyesore is very much everything from IKEA Trådfri. And I'm from Sweden! 🙀 The WiFi units are pretty easy to implement via Tuya and Homebridge but running a Zigbee sniffer on Linux and mqtt is starting to make sense and it fits how my brain works, which I think is a factor for many people getting deeper into automation and smart home solutions.
Ohh the Good Stuff!... Thanks for the heads up. Ordered a pair of bi-color Zigbee bulbs W/hub for $15 with an Amazon Deal! So great! I also picked up a plug with a wireless button for $10. Oh the "cheap" Zigbee!
Do these work with zigbee2mqtt/Home Assistant? I do have zigbee2mqtt set up, and I've been looking to extend my mesh. Edit: found a zigbee2mqtt support page for them. Excellent!
I purchased the zigbee gu10s a few months ago, they are exceptional quality for the price. The only downside is the availability. Amazon only have stock every now and then and I'm only able to purchase a pack or two at a time. This is probably covid related, and I look forward to buying more when they become available again.
Paul, not sure if you know yet but ewelink now works with smartthings as a service. And I dont mean the zigbee type I mean the WiFi type. Add a lamp, link the service and everything gets imported.
Started watching your channel because of the excellent focus on sound and sound quality (I work as a sound designer) but stayed for the running gags and great reviews. The humor and production quality is a big difference from watching overly serious review channels.
Keep up the good work Paul. Ignore the twerps who give you a rough time. You speak sense. And...goof away! Entertaining and informative. Balls to those who don't get you or what you are trying to achieve. Rich
Despite the fact that I don't need lights I love the combination of logical and entertaining. The Berts of the world are just fodder. Keep up the fantastic work.
Haha. This was supposed to be he-man's debut on the channel because I filmed this one ages ago. I actually thought when I was filming it "is this too goofy even for me?! I've got my shirt off for christ sake" then I shrugged and carried on 😂
Laughed so hard at this one. It's good to see the prices coming down in the west. In my area in Asia, cheap home IoT stuff (mostly Xiaomi) has been available for at least a year, perhaps two not sure. And I was considering starting an informative blog about it because especially then it wasn't intuitive at all. I learned as I automated my entire apartment with motion sensors, zigbee (ooh!) and wifi bubs & switches. Amazing stuff. I didn't understand why none of my family and friends back home were talking about smart home stuff. When I mentioned it all I got was: yeah that's what I need, a lightshow in my living room... So ignorant, so sad. But then I found your channel and I could never do a better job than you Paul let alone make it this fun. Keep up the good work bro.
Hey man, i got a question, i love your vids. I have a lidl zigbee starter kit, bus i want to add zigbee rgb light bulbs. I saw on tour video that the linkind hubs are good but the rgb bulbs are nog zigbee, only wifi. Can i still link this light to the zigbee lidl hub? Or what zigbee bulbs in the same price category can i use that are a nice high luman?.
Just found your channel.. funny as heck and that Blue Blue Blue sketch reminded me of monty python!!! Great channel and very informative.. pretty much my whole home is setup with Fibaro controlling light, heating, hot water, garden lights, security lights etc and can’t imagine how we lived without these home comforts...
Paul I just got myself a couple of starter kits and I'm completely bewildered by the pairing process of the LED light bulbs that I got from the starter kit. Initially the remote worked out of the box with the light and the included zigbee hub pluged into my network, but the moment I tried to set it all up in the app it all started to go a bit Pete Tong. For the life of me I can't pair the LED bulb in either the LIDL smart home or the Tuya Amart app. I did manage to add the remote but it then it stopped controlling the LED bulb (which worked out of the box). I've tried reseting everything a couple of times and also attempted the manual reset of the LED bulb (switch it off/on a few times until it blinks) but for the life of me I can't get it to pair. The fact that there are multiple White bulbs in the 'Lighting' section of the apps doesn't help, but I've tried all of them a number of times and also tried to detect the devices manual countless times but it ain't having it. FFS! It's doing my head in. How is it possible to be able to add both the LIDL Zigbee hub and remote to the smart apps but not the LED bulb. Arrgh!
I finally managed to pair one light bulb after flicking the light on and off (dimmer) switching countless times (I kid you not), phew! All I can say is good thing I also order a Hue hub as a backup for my Hue motion sensors, purchased a while back when I got a fab deal on them, cause it was a doddle to pair all the LIDL lights to the Hue hub! 🤔 This really makes me wonder about why it was almost impossible to pair with the native LIDL hub when it was such a breeze with the Hue hub and perhaps this is the reason peeps speak so highly of Hue which in my first attempt "just works" LOL Also one observation I made is that although the LIDL lights appear to be very bright, the issue is that you can't seem to dim them quite as much and so it all depends on use cases. For me I am big on low key mood lighting and the LIDL lights can be to bright even when I set them to 1%
Thanks Paul. Much appreciated. Your videos have helped me immensely throughout this pandemic year. I have learned a lot from your content and had a lot of fun implementing what you presented. I wish you and yours happy holidays and a much improved healthy, safe 2021. Keep your videos coming please. I always look forward to the next video from you. :-)
I'm looking to make my home a smart home for the first time, but which bulbs/products would you say are the best at a reasonable price I'd prefer to use zigbee not WiFi
What are the best zigbee bulbs in the present day? Ideally ones I can connect to hue hub so I don’t need a new hub. Or should I just buy a dongle for my home assistant like skyconnect which will act as a thread border router (I don’t have new gen echos or HomePods as I’m a cheap skate)
Nothing gets me out of bed this early on a Saturday like a man with a British accent hip-thrusting to “OH THE ZIGBEE”. 😉😆 Hope you and Nisha have a great holiday, Paul!
Hi Paul, Merry Christmas to you and the family. Im doing a new house build, I put clipsal Cbus in the last house with Minder for Automation. Which way should I go this time. Is there a 1 holistic system or several. Any help would be great. Love your video's Cheers Garry🇭🇲
Hi Paul - any chance you could do a video giving tips on the best way to ensure no WiFi dead spots around the house please? Would be soooooo useful given all this smart home stuff relies on it so much. Thanks!
Good Evening Mr Hibbert, I hope you and the family are well. Quick question. I'm looking into replacing my IKEA E27 White Spectrum lights with RGB lights. Shall I just wait for the Linkind RGB lights to come out? Or can you recommend any other make? Apart from Phillips Hue of course! No one likes Philips Hue!
hi paul great video hub £9.50 2 x Innr Smart Bulb White B22 £19.99 All conneted 1st time will try some cheap zigbee switches any idea where I can get cheap sensors, pir etc? keep those videos coming my saturday routine requires it!
Well i tested my hue setup just no watching it. Sure i miss the comparison, but they can do purple. I do not see any blue shine or reflections. Not a hue fanboy,. I bought into hue soley because of hue sybc and want to expand my setup with cheaper lights now. These lights shown here seem to be an option for this. Thx for the video
Have you done any comparisons of the various brands power consumption when powered up but the lights are off? Worth investigating and you may be surprised especially when you add them all up.
Hey Paul! I dont ever really subscribe and rarely comment. Your videos have been entertaining and informative. I am having a house built right now (first home) and have been watching and learning. Keep up the good work!
Hey Paul, which GU10 led RGB bulb dims the best. Not necessarily the brightest but the one that dims the smoothest over the whole range down to the lowest intensity?
Thanks for the video Paul. Merry Christmas 🎄 my missus treated me to the Amazon Echo 4th generation with premium sound for Christmas so just stepping into the smart home world for the first time.
Paul thanks 4 all your advice 👍🤗 Is it possible sinds you also nows how something should sound ! ! Can you make a test for soundbar with the google chromecast in it ? 🤔
Is the build quality and longevity of the zigbee stuff good like the philips hue products? Only asking as i have bought cheap led products before and they have either been faulty or not lasted any longer than 6 months.
good stuff Paul :) if you could, would be nice to do one video comparing color ranges and luminescence of different zigbee compatible RGB E27 (or others) bulbs. It kinda sucks buying some without trying their color spectrum first and be later disappointed :)
Hi I have started watching you over last few months. Love your videos informative and funny. I have brought the hub and bulb set however there range is limited I need some zigbee e14 bulbs that work with the hub in this video can you or anyone recommend any alternative brands? I've seen innr brand on amazon.
Hey Paul. i just moved to a new house with limited internet access. I have lots of smart lights, both wifi & Philips Hue. but i have not installed any because of my limited network. which light use up the least space on my wifi?
Hi Paul, any updates regarding RGB GU10 bulbs, either ZIgbee or WiFi? I've been looking at the LePro WiFI ones on Amazon but I'm concerned about their reliability. I've already got some Hue stuff but looking for cheaper alternatives which are still just as reliable.
Referencing one of Paul’s previous videos on Lidl smart home gear, I was just in the store and found myself walking round muttering... oohhh the zigbee! Hahaha 🤣 what have you done to me. 😆
Paul, I want to make sure I’ve understood you correctly. Since I already have a Phillips Hue Hub for one device, I can in essence use these light with it then bring into my HomeKit app?
You have to be careful with homekit. I'm 99% sure they block non-Hue devices that are connected via the Hue bridge, so I THINK the answer is sadly no :(
Another brilliant video Paul. When I got the notification on my phone I walked home from Christmas shopping just to play it on my telly. Suppose I'd better finish off the Christmas shopping now or people will be disappointed...
When you mentioned that Philips Hue can't do purple I thought "oh ok then it ain't me". I've got myself the starter kit with 3x bulbs and the recent Hub during Black Friday to test them out and start dabbling with home automation and smart lights...thing is I do design for work and photo/video editing as a hobby, so I'm kinda obsessed with colors. The first thing I did when testing them out was purple because it's my second favourite colour and guess what? It couldn't do it. To some it might not be a huge deal but for me when I ask it to Alexa, or try every single inch of the color wheel in the Hue app, only to get a pinky color or a dimmer blue(which is NOT purple at all) it's kind of a bummer. I kinda like the setup, the automation, routines and stuff but I'm thinking of returning them to Amazon because if Hue is considered to be the best ecosystem around and it can't even do purple for the crazy prices their stuff is sold at I guess it's just not for me. I know they can't be perfect but they've been around for a while and missing a color entirely isn't something I'd expect for such a premium tier product...not to mention some of the colors are way too dim.
@@paulhibbert yeah I mean, it's pretty obvious that they totally lack that color so those that don't see it are either fanboys or colorblind...we all like specific brands over others but this is kinda evident. I know that returning them just for this might seem like too much but again, given their price which is justified only by the fact that they're "the best" (at least according to most people) I expected to have all the colors there and with decent lighting values for all of them. I'm aware that some colors are inherently dimmer than others but again, from what I heard I expected a bit more.
Thank you for the entertaining content. Please measure the PWM frequency of the future zigbee bulbs you are going to review. All smart lights except Hue gives me headache from flickering. Hue works at 1000hz, which is the reason you can dim them to very low 5% and still not see flickering. Put your phone to slow motion camera mode and see yourself. I do not like the high price but have no other option than Hue that I know of.
@@paulhibbert 1. set your iphone/android phone to slow motion (like 120 frames per second) and you will see strobe/flicker. 2. or take a 1m white cable and quickly rotate it/swing it... With cheap lights you will not see the cable continuously just at some points. This is why cheap lights cannot be used in industrial settings with rotational machines, since when the rotation speed matches the flicker, you will not see the machine rotating. 3. Another good indicator is that the light can go down to 5% brightness. Ikea smart lights can go to minimum 20% since they use 600hz PWM, which is above average. I found some zigbee Chinese lights claiming 1000hz PWM but it was fake. For non smart lights, look for Philips EyeComfort lights. Philips can charge these prices and they know it. Corporate greed!! ;)
I wondered about the camera test, but I'm confused, because Philips have been the worst for strobing when I've been filming out of any product I've ever owned. I demonstrated it in my original "Zigbee is a con" video but I've never been fully satisfied my findings were completely scientific.
Going off topic here but why don't amazon put an IR blaster in their echos. This would be an awesome idea. What's your view. Is it not possible or just too expensive.
Wonderful video. Much appreciated as I am about to dive into the home automation world. Starting with a Hubitat, to keep it local but i will need, she who should not be named at some point in the future. Paul, could I ask, I would really appreciate an update review on the Hubitat c-7 .
Hey Paul. I love watching these vids and having owned Amazon Echos since the outset and Hive heating for a few years too, am only now starting to venture further into home automation. I have been wondering; is Hive any good for anything other than the heating? We have bulbs which are great, but expensive and the camera, the price of which makes Phillips Hue look affordable. I find myself looking for devices compatible with SmartLife as I don’t want to get bogged down with too many platforms. What are your thoughts on Hive? Cheers.
Man I'm glad the ZigBee is getting so cheap I managed to get some from Lidl even though I was a bit late (seems the plugs are far more popular than the bulbs because they have bulbs galore but little tho no sockets) I've been going round swapping out all my WiFi stuff for ZigBee ones my network was getting a bid congested.
Hi Paul. I searched for a bunch of colour (RGBW) ZigBee GU10 and found that on a normal white, you can see the colour spectrum separated. It wasn’t putting out an even white. It’s not obvious but it is is noticeable. Can you test/comment on this with the brands you test please?
Cheers Paul, need some of these unfortunately unavailable everywhere I look. Do you have any other recommendations for zigbee gu10 dimmable bulbs that are currently available?
Paul please do a lux test on the dimming capabilities of these bulbs. What I have found is that the cheap bulbs might be brighter but don't dim as well.as Philips hue. Therefore you are sat there with your sunglasses on at night. Also when you have a power cut the cheap bulbs don't remember there state so they come back on at full brightness. Not ideal if you are on holiday for 2 weeks. If they dim as well as the Hue and remember there state I would pick them up tomorrow if not…....
I haven't had a product for ages that didn't remember it's state, but yeah I do need to start showing people the minimum brightness, I've had a few people request it.
Best use of the phrase "frivolous japery" this year :-D The Linkind website won't let me purchase GU10 bulbs without the hub, which is sad :-( I've got a 4th gen Echo (Ooh, the Zigbee) so I don't need the hub. Any ideas when these will be available please?
Happy Christmas mate! I don't think they are bizarrely enough! The linkind app seems to be quite different from tuya and I don't see why they would have written their own software if they were tuya bulbs. I don't remember if I tried to add them to Tuya though so I could be wrong.
I think that the reason why Phillips hue bulbs don’t go purple is because of the fact that the colors that make purple, red, and blue, are not evenly balanced on the RGB LEDs scale on the Phillips hue bulbs.
These are certainly good value compared to Phillips, but they are pretty much the same price as IKEA Tradfri which has a more comprehensive range. I just bought another batch of Tradfri socket adapters at the amazing price of only £8 each!
Picked up two ZB light sensors from Aliexpress for £8, was well chuffed, got a Zigbee2Mqtt stick off amazon for £15 and added the lot to HomeAsssistant in ten minutes so PIR triggered lights only come on in the dark now rather thank using Sunrise/sunset as a trigger.
I know you are not fond of Philips Hue and I do agree that it is not cheap and yes if I have known when I first started with Hue, what I know now i would never have started with it, but ii did and that is it. i can not see any advantage in changing now, bulbs will last for years. i just got two new dimmer switches from hue, I did look at the ones from Ldls, but as far as i could see they were only available in a starter pack. i would like a movement sensor to work with the hue lights on the stairs but at £35 it is a bit much, I wonder if there is any other what will work with Hue, but is cheaper.
