I had the pleasure of going for a ride in the new Xiaoyu 2.0 Autonomous bus on the streets of Zhengzhou, China.
Riding an autonomous bus through Zhengzhou, China, offers a glimpse into the future of urban mobility, showcasing the swift advances in autonomous transportation technologies. Yutong's autonomous bus, a symbol of progress, embodies the integration of cutting-edge design and technology to enhance urban transportation experiences.
The Yutong driverless bus is distinguished by its sleek design, prioritizing passenger comfort with expansive glass panels for panoramic city views. It's equipped with advanced sensors like radars, cameras, and LiDARs, providing real-time data for safe navigation through Zhengzhou’s bustling streets. The interior design focuses on flexibility, offering modular seating, USB ports, and screens for passenger convenience.
Demonstrating remarkable situational awareness, the Yutong bus smoothly navigates urban challenges, from lane changes to unpredictable pedestrian actions, showcasing a significant safety improvement over traditional buses. Its autonomous system is designed for quick response, ensuring passenger safety and contributing to more efficient urban traffic flow.
Yutong's bus is not just about technology; it's also about user experience. Accessibility features like code, voice, and facial recognition entry complement the comfortable interiors, equipped with air conditioning, ample seating, and connectivity options, promising an enjoyable ride for all passengers.
The introduction of autonomous buses like Yutong’s in urban settings promises reduced traffic congestion, more efficient public transport systems, and lower emissions, contributing to sustainable city living. However, it also raises questions about employment in the transportation sector and the need for new legal frameworks to ensure privacy and safety.
The public’s enthusiastic response to autonomous buses underscores a growing acceptance and curiosity about autonomous technology. The flexibility of this technology opens up possibilities for various transportation needs, from corporate to school buses, indicating a transformative future for urban mobility.

I haven’t visited China in 3 years and this tech that you see in movies is actually a thing here. I live in Hawaii and it’s taken literal decades for us to build a sky rail network for public transportation (projected completion will be in 2035) It’s so frustrating seeing how things are so slow here in the states while other countries are booming with tech and infrastructure.

Europe had it's time in innovation (although we mostly thought about more and more effective ways of killing each other for progressively dumber reasons), then US took prime, with mix of military and civil progress in technology, and I suppose now it's Asian time. I assume and hope that SA and Africa are next. Also, Asia was always a bit ahead in technology, and I suppose their culture and society has something to do with it, embracing progress. West has a bit different ideals, and we have mostly older population, so that also doesn't help.

We need a mixture of sizes. Lots of rides need one or two passenger vehicles. It doesn't make sense to do door to door transportation with a 10 to 12 passenger vehicle. Larger capacity vehicles are best for fixed routes. And it's best to run with as few empty seats as possible. Moving mass takes energy.

From the video, there is a left turn arrow for the bus. Doesn't this give the rights to the bus to make the turn? I understand if the light is not an arrow but a circular green, then the bus has to yield to oncoming traffic before making the turn. *Edit - adding Since this is in China, the rules may be different. In the US, the car making the left turn will have the right of way if there is a left green arrow. If it is just a circular green, then the car making the left turn has to yield to oncoming traffic before making the turn.

Here in Brazil sometime robbers catch the money people pay to the buss driver. If this buss come to here robbers will have a bad time to catch some money. I would have a "frio na barriga" (butterflies in the stomach) the first time ridding on it.

China for over the decades since opening up to the outside world in 1979, the Chinese government invested greatly on education, research, science, engineering, infrastructure and the people worked hard together for the good of their country and quietly made a Quantum Leap forward to where it is today, as you can see in Chinese cities are far more cosmopolitan and advanced than in the West. In the US sadly the politicians with their corrupted and vested self interests of the few have driven this once great country and the American people backwards, the US influence in the world stage has in reality has lost its grip other countries has quietly moved forward pivoting away from the US and the West.

These aren't sad times for America. We're still accomplishing great things hidden behind sensationalized media rhetoric. We're still strong and will remain that way.

China has been amazing, for sure! I consider it a privilege to be a guest here and witness the amazing transformation and Chinese people deserve to be proud. Your critique of America is a bit harsh, though. It shouldn't be so black and white. Imagine the world where China and America work together; what a paradise we could create!

The US government has very little to no interest in investing big money in things that don't shoot bullets nor drop bombs. That's why you don't have this in the US but you have 3 of the most advanced and expensive Ford-class aircraft carriers, 7 more to come in the future. The money it took for developing and building those carriers is more than enough to put these autonomous driving buses all over American major cities. But noo......

The road environment there is about as different as it's possible to get from where I live, a tiny country town in the Cotswolds in the UK where there's scarcely a straight road and it's necessary to navigate through very narrow streets with parked cars. That's before you even think about a city like London, which does not have vast, wide empty roads on a grid, but a massively complex tangle of very crowded roads, pedestrians everywhere, builders skips on the roads and a myriad of difficult to navigate situations. In contrast, those roads in China are like a wide open desert land with a tiny handful of other vehicles. That's not to say that it isn't very impressive, but I would still be astonished to see this mini-bus being able to navigate through London, even with a few more years of development.

It's a point.. .baby steps. The area of the city this rides around is a less developed area, but it's quickly getting populated.

I would love it if they made slightly smaller "personal-sized" busses like this as an alternative to vans. For one thing, having to crouch and contort my body just to climb into a regular vehicle (especially as someone who's taller than average) is something I'll always hate.
