This song became a hit at a time when the Vietnam War was in full swing. Hundreds of thousands of Americans separated from their loved ones, with the added worry of many not coming back alive or severely injured at the very least... Can you imagine the emotions, especially with an emotional song like this? Thanks for playing this great tune JT!
Actually the Vietnam war just really getting started in 1965, it was only in 1967 that things really heated up. It was one of the reasons for the violent protests in 1968 in Chicago at the Democrat Convention. Nixon ran on the platform of bringing the troops home and ending the war.
When women react to this video...they smile...their eyes sparkle...they lick their lips and touch their hair..they tingle ALL OVER... it makes me smile to their reactions. Mr Hatfield at his best , live, on beast mode. Legend!
Bobby Hatfield and his voice is national treasure, few can do what he could do with his voice. He had amazing control, range, and feeling in his voice.
His breathing technique was infamous amongst professional singing coaches. Of course, his range everyone could hear. Amazing. Sung with words You Could Understand. Beautiful.
OMG...the late Bobby Hatfield! I was 15 years old when I watched him sing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. No one has sang this song he did. He owns this song. No auto tunes just pure raw talent. We lost him in 2003. RIP Bobby! We miss your beautful voice! 💖 💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏
He was way ahead of his time with those vocal calisthenics that are so popular nowadays! It s an iconic song, and I love it:) I would really like to see your reaction to Harry Chapin's "The Cat's in the Cradle" and "Taxi".
I was in my late teens when this song came out, But this song has the rare distinction of having TWO Titles; EBB TIDE from in the 50s as I recall & UNCHAINED MELODY
Bobby Hatfield did this one in only one take and nailed it completely. Nothing in the way of voice enhancers or whatever else is used nowadays. Pure, raw talent.
As a 40-year-old, I feel as though I grew up in the wrong generation. I love my 80's & 90's stuff, and wouldn't trade it for the world. But, hearing stuff like Chuck Berry, Elvis, Righteous Brothers makes me wish I could have grown up in the '50s. The cars, the music, the respect people had for one another. Obvious things would need to be changed in that regard though; not everyone was treated with the respect they deserved. The Righteous Brothers also did a cover of "Georgia On My Mind" which was incredible. Some other songs worth listening to Josh Turner - Would you go with me (I think you'll enjoy his voice) Disturbed - Sound of Silence The Beatles - Hey Jude / Let it Be Love and positivity
dont feel bad , they sang for all generations! I was blessed to grow up with all these spectacular musicians....unfortunately we took them for granted! but you...you have the ability to listen and appreciate, God Bless those talented musicians, Bobby Hatfield with his 5+octave and many more! ty for listening to the classics! I for one was raised outside of Detroit during the Mowtow during the 60s,....now that's music!
Thank you for being truthful that you've heard this song. Too many people lie about "Being the first time hearing it". Anyone who's watched TV, or movies, listened to the radio, or been on the internet has heard this song.
Nice reaction. One of my favorite songs. Such an amazing performance. The way he hits those hight notes at the end is great. The story goes, that they flipped a coin to see which one of them would sing this song, and he won
And Bill Medley is listed as one of the producers. After he saw/heard the final version he supposedly turned to Phil Spector and mused how are we supposed to top that with our next song.
Great reaction & I'm glad to see so many younger people discovering all the amazing music I was lucky to grow up hearing. i was born two years after this performance, but I always heard it played at home & on the radio. It's been one of my all time favorite love songs since I was a young kid. This song has been covered many times by many great artists but Bobby Hatfield's version is probably the most well known & beloved the world over. Yes, you are correct - It was the main love theme for the movie GHOST starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, & Whoopi Goldberg (she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress that year). This was definitely Bobby's song as no other can match his performance - so silky smooth & melodic, such a one of a kind ethereal voice that can make any lady (or man) swoon - LOL! Keep in mind also that he did this on live TV. This was back in 1965, years before any computer aided autotune. This is what we call Blue Eyed Soul. My late uncle used to call this & other love songs like it from back in the day "a guaranteed panty dropper" :-D
This song was written by a 16-year-old boy. He wrote it for a girl that he had a crush on in hopes she would hear it. He did not hear it sung in public for 19 years when it became the score for the movie “Unchained”. Elvis and Joan Baez recorded it. Compared to Bobby Hatfield’s rendition they sound like karaoke singers. It was featured in one of the sexist scenes in movies in the film Ghost between Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. By that time she had married someone else.
'Unchained' is a 1955 prison film directed by Hall Bartlett and starring Elroy Hirsch, Barbara Hale, Chester Morris, Todd Duncan, and Johnny Johnston. The movie was based on the non-fiction book 'Prisoners are People.' By Kenyon J. Scudder. The film is best remember for its theme song, "Unchained Melody." Todd Duncan and African American who is an opera singer, and actor was the first to sing the song. He plays one of the prisoners in the movie where he sings this song. Remembering his wife and family he has left behind. And the loneliness he feels everyday while in prison. " AND TIME GOES BY SO SLOWLY, AND TIME CAN DO SO MUCH, ARE YOU STILL MINE!" "Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North used the music as a theme for the little known prison movie ;Unchained' (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. Unchained Melody has since become a standard, and one of the 20th century, most recorded songs most notably by the "Righteous Brothers." According to the songs publishing house and administrator over 1,500 recordings and counting of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artist, in multiple languages. Ten years after its first released on the film Unchained (1955). Bobby Hatfield the other half of the dynamic duo "Righteous Brothers" Gives one of the greatest live television performances on the Andy Williams show (1965) that has stood the test of time. His version of Unchained Melody has become the standard for which all other artist perform this song. Note: In 1981 the movie "Ghost" starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore featured unchained melody as its theme song. The vocals used in the film was the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. The rest as they say is history.
You are blessed to have a Mom who exposed you to great music, I believe you said your Dad did as well. You seem like a really good person, so I guess they did lots of things right.
Pure natural talent can not be taught Sorry voice teachers I sing and can recommend this as a all time great performance. Not that youdont open up voices and extend ranges you do great job if well qualified. But again you cant improve this God given voice.peace!
Timeless classic. This is a hard song to sing. You could try to sing alongside with Mr. Boby Hatfield but for me, this is his song. R.I.P good sir. Thanks for your reaction. They don't make songs like this anymore.
BOBBY HATFIELDS' PERFORMANCE IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR" PLUS. HE DISPLAYED HIS RAW, NATURAL GOD GIVEN AMAZING MUSICAL TALENT - AMEN HE SUNG THIS SONG SOFTLY, SWEETLY, SMOOTHLY, SENSUALLY AND WITH SOUL GRIPPONG PASSION THAT WAS SO PURE & CLEAN & ELEGANT AND POWERFULLY GOOD I HAVE HEARD MANY VERSIONS OF THIS SONG (incl Elvis), BUT BOBBY SUNG IT THE BEST - PERIOD . HE TRULY OWNS THIS SONG. I SAW MANY GIRL REACTORS TO THIS AND MOST WERE EMOTIONAL OR TEARY OR OVERWHELMED OR SPEECHLESS OR "FELL IN LOVE" WITH BOBBY.
LOL@your wondering why you like this song so much. They say "imitation is the greatest form of flattery" and as sooooo many other artists (including greats like Elvis) have performed this song, this version by Bill Hatfield (1/2 of the Righteous Bros.) is HANDS DOWN the best.
I LIKE YOU SWEETIE.YOU WANT TO GO DEEP WITH THIS SONG BABY YOU WILL MELT IN THE END OF THIS SONG THIS SONG GOT REAL FELLING FROM MR BOBBY HATFIELD I'M VERY SURE YOU NEVER HEARD SINGER LIKE THIS BEFORE HA HA HA WITH THIS CALIBER OF VOICE. OK SWEETIE KEEP TRUCKING
You've heard the the song yet you could stop it in the middle of the best part. The whole song building to that climax and you shut it off right in the middle, wtf? Unbelievable. You really don't care much for the song or you never would of done that.
