Rim Driven Propellers (RDP) or Rim Drive Propulsers and Thrusters 

I've been thinking about something like this for years now. I had no idea someone was actually developing this concept.

I ran a nozzle tug in the 80's it was a pod design basicly a sideways wedge in the middle of the hull this enabled a short horizontal prop shaft (good for thrust) turning a standard prop with the tips radiused making it 2/3rd size it fit in a round tube for a rudder this enabled it to reverse as tight as in foward and increased thrust by 40% (l was told) it pulled like a mad thing. It could go full fwd to full rev in less than 2 seconds (if necessary) trick was go 1/2 throttle into reverse back to neutral then full reverse twin disc gear groaned a bit but held up no problem. This enabled a 36f tug to jump boomsticks. I'm sure it was a much more inexpensive over the counter design with standard parts no complicated special design needing a 'tech' flown in. It was a blast to run instant power. Straighten tow hooks up to 1 1/4 so the guy before me laughed.

I guess it works on a submarine by inverting the ring and having prop blades on outside almost would look more like a conventional shaft drive unless you moved the blade rings forward of the stern planes. I wonder how quiet the Columbia class SSBNs will be.

What kind of limitations on speed are we talking? 5,10, 15 knots?

Hving 2 diff systems, 1 for driving & 1 for pod steering & braking is best design of all, sure still hve a rudder also.

How does one keep the sea life from getting sucked through?

It all comes down to size & less moving prts. The bigger simple 2 propellers inline 2 pitch+ per propeller best & this braking fan-less pod but hving volvo pods only not bad either.

those RDPs need better shapes to the blades... closer to the shaft drive to move more water.. heck there is room in some of those to install 2 blades on each section.. \\ to add to the thrust.. they are missing about 20 or 30 percent of the surface in my gestimate if the drive can create enough torque to spin it.. or maybe there is just not enough RPM generated by the external drive..

Have you seen any figures for effeciancy ? Had been thinking about this idea, having look at narrow boats in the UK , ideal for this type of unit requiring very limited speed on inland waterways .

How difficult would it be to have variable pitch in one of these? And would it even be worth it? And what are the pros and cons to a design like this? (I am wondering for both aircraft and water based vehicles)

so these r the brakes for boats, nice, that is useful feature. Should b build max diameter allowable for draft splitting the job right & left if needed. Super expensive yachts should b 1st calling. Not how u see them here BUT just 1/3 of the hole blocked by maneuvering " blade-less dyson fan brakes". Normal inline 2 prop propellers 1, 2 pitch or adjustable pitch r best game on earth. Pods r very good if u can't hve best 2 propeller inline & fan-less system

If this could be coupled with a gearbox and utilised for UAV applications, this could be revolutionary. Main drawbacks of UAS is inefficiency at the props outer edge and the noise these inefficiencies create.

Make a basket thick enough it can b plenty strong but if so thick solid metal becomes lighter than machined honey comb basket then pnt-less effort.

If these r sized right all 4 corners they could become working anchors.

Braking a boat & no entangling is key sure clear selling pnts, w/matching sailing knots no drag 3rd good pnt. Pod steering braking drive slow speeds is fine, just bigger diameter & 1/3 diameter blades max. If the blades r wire basket thicker than normal blades but still lighter bc hollow like honey comb, yeah u really hve * a great new product & design. Bc wire basket thick blades they can b made cheaper any fuck size & milled easily down to needed shape, then basket/honey comb covered w/what ever durable material to cheapest use, & use as shit to repair w/new surface rap coating like body work. All med sided propellers not needing ultra strength load will switch over to honey combed machined coated system.
