Here's a relevant Reddit QnA with the Devs of Rivals 2 from PAX West 2023: www.reddit.com/r/RivalsOfAether/comments/16awa5f/roa2_qna_with_devs_from_pax_west_2023/?context=3

it hurts me bad that the casual scene for rivals basically only started to exist once the workshop came out. i love that it was added, it was definitely a huge benefit to the game and we wouldn't have olympia, pomme, hodan and mollo in the game if not for it, but it's so sad seeing every single youtuber only ever talk about the workshop while ignoring the base game. it sucks because rivals is such a beautiful game. the sort of combos and techniques and characters you see in this game are unlike anything else in the platform fighter genre, and so much of it gets put away because casual players never give the base game a serious shot. i'm not sure what the developers themselves could even do to avoid this, all i can hope is that it doesn't happen in rivals 2 (though i'm still hoping that it does have a workshop of some kind)
@DRANBOLT
@DRANBOLT 7 месяцев назад
absolutely agree with this. i think the first impression it gave many was just that it was a goofy platform fighter and that was it. the volume of these kinds of videos going "RONALD MCDONALD VERSUS LUIGI??" also just got pretty tiring as well

Thing i’m also kinda upset about is that alot of workshop characters lack the cool stage control gimmicks and even just really unique normals of rivals. Although i’ll give it credit that all of my favorite hyperfixations are on the workshop

Sadly some people use smash clone instead of platform fighter as if rivals is a worse version of smash and even if they added a new one I would still pick R2 any day

I thought the rivals of ether studio left out shielding and grabs because it would be so much more to animate, and they only had so much time and money. They have very talented developers. There is no way that making shielding and grabbing was impossible.
@DimzNoms
@DimzNoms 9 месяцев назад
Well they were alot smaller when they first started out and Dan was basically the only coder. iirc he stated that back then coding ledges and grabs resulted is too many errors and bugs. So without grabs he decided to do something else than shields (for balance) argo parries.

You kinda glossed over the workshop. That boosted it's replayability and casual enjoyment factor through the roof!
@DimzNoms
@DimzNoms 8 месяцев назад
Yeah I did. I didn't want to open that can of worms because while workshop did 100% increase replayability and casual enjoyment, it shouldn't/wouldn't be the main reason to play Rivals 2. "Wouldn't" because it's not going to be a launch/semi-launch addition and "Shouldn't" because Rivals should stand on its own merit and not have the workshop community be its life blood. Don't get me wrong I still think workshop is great and should be a feature in Rivals 2, but I wanted to focus what the developers can do for the game without workshop. On the flipside I am looking close at Fraymakers right now since that game right now is basically being ran off of community content. So it will be a great example of if this would be a fun and/or successful way for a game to progress.

Hey nice video. I agree with all points. I really hope they improve the multi-platform element, both xbox and switch versions of rivals1 are lacking compared to the steam version. I also hope they do better with reducing bugs, some of it may have to do with the limited engine, but issues with controller support, replays, and other minor breakage need addressing.

40:54 I don't know what world you're living in where it's easier to do 3D modeling than sprite animation. I think in Rivals 1, the limitation on alt costumes was less being able to put in the work to sprite them and more being able to fit them onto a sprite and still have it be readable and clear. We did get a few costumes that completely changed characters' appearances in Rivals 1, but they were so few because of these limitations. Sure, with models you don't necessarily have to make new animations since you can slap the current animations onto the alternate model, but if you want a custom taunt to go with it, that's way harder to develop than the custom taunts for Rivals 1, and if you want a fun new addition like the minigames of the arcade skins or cute details like that, you need to program that into a 3D engine with more new models and animations, which is always going to be more difficult. So while yes, there is potential for custom model-swap costumes, it's important to keep in mind that there's also way steeper limitations in what you can do, and they'll almost certainly still take more development resources.
@DimzNoms

This section was about monetization of colors and outfits. Which for this specific scenario 3D modeling is easier than sprite animation since you will not have to redraw every frame of animation for the outfit and you are about to do more with the outfits in equal to less time than with sprite animation in this regard. Adding things (like a hat) to the model would not need anything to be programmed; Adding special fx would but that was also true of Rivals 1 (tho none of this programming would all that time consuming). Also New taunt animation would be the "same process" as making them with sprite animation in Rivals 1, but with a bonus potential for those taunts to be added to the character's other outfits without incurring too much additional recourses when compared to sprite animation.
@Awesomeness-iz3dh
@Awesomeness-iz3dh 7 месяцев назад
@@DimzNoms Adding a hat to a model would still be a fairly time-intensive process. Sure, it wouldn't be to the same degree as modifying every single sprite, but it wouldn't be as effortless as an alt costume or even as quick to make as a new taunt animation. And speaking of new taunts, animating a 3D model is exponentially more difficult than animating a 2D sprite, and programming in special cosmetic features is similarly much more difficult in a 3D engine.
@DimzNoms
@DimzNoms 7 месяцев назад
@@Awesomeness-iz3dh Well in that case I hope it isn't difficult to them. Because when I have to change and edit things for my 2D & 3D games; I have much easier time doing edits on the 3D side than the 2D. So I guess we will just have to hope that it wouldn't be a problem for them. I would hate to get less cosmetic content for my favorite chars because of that reason.

I feel like there’s decent reasons for rivals that you didn’t say: it’s most likely going to be cheaper then smash. Full game right now is only $30, and will go on sale way more often than a new smash will, which will prob be $70 when it comes out

@Awesomeness-iz3dh
@Awesomeness-iz3dh 7 месяцев назад
I don't think the claim that Rivals 1 catered too much to the competitive scene and offered too little to casual players is really fair. It has a story mode (albeit a dated one), alternate hazard-filled variants of stages, Rivals of Tether as a fun side mode, everything Abyss mode has going on (even though it admittedly does get dull with how repetitive it is), and most importantly, the workshop, which just goes above and beyond in ensuring an infinite stream of new toys to play around with for the casual player. They simply did this while also listening to the community and paying attention to character balance in competitive play so it remains fairly well-balanced competitively, which I think also makes casual more fun since you have a more balanced roster for that as well. Additionally, the care that was given to the competitive scene paid off for Rivals. Sure, the amount of players who actually play competitively is relatively low, but a competitive scene isn't just for competitive players; it's also for spectators, who might see the fast-paced gameplay and want to give it a shot themselves. I think this is one of the things that Rivals has done exceptionally well, personally, despite a few small shortcomings (especially with the lackluster story mode). In terms of Rivals 2, I think it'll do what Rivals 1 did even better, given the time to flesh itself out with additional content after launch. It's already confirmed to have an expansive story mode in the works, after all.
@DimzNoms
@DimzNoms 7 месяцев назад
I claim that Rivals 1 didn't cater enough to the casuals because none of the casual modes were available at Launch (granted most still was planned). It's not charitable to have players to wait atleast 6months after launch for a 'Party Mode' then say that the game has Always had something for casual players. Obviously these modes worked out for them impressively (especially Workshop), but these modes not being at launch left the casual players nothing to do at launch. It was just versus mode or log out. The versus mode wasn't even very customizable when it comes to the things that you can do outside of the standard fighting. Not many casual stages or game altering things like items. I don't fault them for this because they had a small team and it was their 1st game (the fact that it came out at all is an accomplishment). For Rivals 2 it looks like there might be a repeat of that. Going off of the Kickstarter goals that might not get met. There isn't going to be Story mode, Combo trails, or Arcade mode at launch. It was already confirmed that Workshop isn't going to be there either. So it's going to possibly be a repeat of the Rivals 1 launch where Versus mode will pretty much be the only mode, on standard stages, and with possibly little to no ways to alter the standard gameplay. This will generally hurt player numbers because after the first month, those casual players will feel like they dont have anything to do. Then after atleast 6months when the more things gets added to the game then will have to roll the dice and just hope that it brings those people back.
@Awesomeness-iz3dh
@Awesomeness-iz3dh 7 месяцев назад
@@DimzNoms That's fair, yeah. I personally still enjoy playing CPU battles in Rivals 1 from time to time, so despite definitely being on the casual side of things myself, I can't really say I'm too worried about the lack of such features on launch, though I could see others getting bored of it. I think a strong launch roster of 9 characters with at least 2 brand new ones will put it above similarly feature-incomplete games like Fraymakers in terms of staying power, though, especially with just how good it looks and how polished it is. Still, I do hope we'll get extra features like an arcade mode and story mode sooner rather than later, but it's still a crowdfunded indie project at the end of the day, even if it's much larger than most indie projects.
