Just like Cryptonymicus said, high energy per weight. My grandpa uses it for his furnace in lieu of central heating.

I have been burning chestnut anthracite coal for many years. It is certainly much cheaper than electric, oil, or gas. I use a hand fired stove so I have heat even during power failures. I pick up my coal directly from a mine about about an hour east of me in the PA anthracite region. I do have electric baseboard heat if needed.

Based on the usual 21st. Century approach to energy availability and usage, your practices, by some, would be considered unique. At my age, and in my all electric apartment, I'm satisfied with my source of available energy. I'm suggesting, I would most post probably, not function very well, prescribing to a kind of, historically old school existence.
