I mean I'm not as high on Sosa or McGwire as I am on Bonds and even Clemens mostly because Bonds was a HoF lock in Pittsburgh before he touched steroids'. So, icing him out made no sense to me especially considering his numbers, and the eye test for the time he spent as a Pirate alone. It's just an unreasonable punishment. Clemens was arguably a HoF before he hit the Yankees too. Sosa and McGwire are less impressive in the early years of their career which is why I can actually understand arguments against them. But Barry Bonds is inarguably THE BEST BASEBALL PLAYER I'd ever seen play. I wasn't around for Mantle or Cobb, or Babe Ruth, but BARRY BONDS, he was something else. Excluding him is honestly a crime.

Considering that when Bonds and Clemens first got on the Ballot, it was 15 years not 10 and the rule was changed after. They should be grandfathered in for the full 15. This is disgusting. You can not tell the Story of BASEBALL with out including Rocket and Barry. Its just not possible. How much does PED's help players who are already great at what they do, outside of faster injury recovery and maintaining muscle mass? If you can't hit a baseball, you just whiffing air with strong arms. Let's look at the lesser talents who juiced....Luis Gonzalez and Brady Anderson. Check the stats. They each had about 2 seasons of pop and then nothing. These dudes were doing what 70% of athletes in their sport were doing at the time, mostly to stay in the majors....but Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, Rodriguez, Palmerio, etc, we're already very talented and great players before the juice became a norm.

Achieving the 500 HR milestone used to mean automatic entry into the Hall of Fame. Every single player before the steroid era ballplayers were in. In fact, only 6 players who have hit 500 or more home runs are not in the hall of fame - Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield and Sammy Sosa. All six suspected and accused of using banned substances. Most would agree that Barry Bonds was the best all around player of the six. However, how do you extrapolate what a player would or would not have accomplished? How can you determine how much steroids padded each player’s numbers? Many want to jump right out there and completely disregard Sosa’s 609 home runs, although only 9 players have reached that. We laugh at the mention of Gary Sheffield and hall of fame being in the same sentence. We scoff at the fact that Manny Ramirez has 7 more home runs than the great Mike Schmidt. Fact is, I don’t know many folks that see Gary Sheffield as a hall of famer, even though he hit 509 home runs. So, yeah let’s get rid of him. But how can you punish Sheffield without punishing Ramirez or Palmeiro for doing the exact same thing? And then how can you punish those three without punishing, Big Mac, Sosa, and yes even the great Barry Bonds. Either they get punished or they don’t. Either they lose votes because they used banned substances or they don’t. You can’t cherry pick who you are going to punish when they all did the same thing. Above everything, I don’t feel bad for Barry Bonds and I will tell you why. He let his ego get in the way of his trip to Cooperstown. Bonds was jealous of lesser talented players getting more accolades then him. So, like many, he broke the rules. But Barry you jughead! If you had just laid off the steroids, you would have had enough merit in your numbers without the juice to make the hall of fame. Most likely you would have wound up with somewhere between 600 and 700 home runs and still would have been the only player with 500 stolen bases and 500 home runs. Still 2500+ hits, 1500+ RBIs, etc. Point being, HOF numbers if only you didn’t let your head size triple. So no, I can’t feel sorry for a guy who was stupid. The all time Home Run leaders list is littered with fakes and phonies and frankly it is a disgrace to guys like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Babe Ruth.

Any sport that needs a bunch of cheaters and phony records to be saved must be a lousy sport. Players who cheat at pro and college sports cheat literally millions of people. They cheat the teams they beat. They cheat all the fans of those teams. They cheat all the people who wagered and lost money on those games. They cheat the players, living or dead, whose records they break. And they cheat the millions of kids who look up to them as heroes. They make a mockery of sportsmanship and fair play, and they normalize being dishonest to get ahead, so they cheat society and the public at large. I like professional golf's approach to unfair play: if you break the rules you are penalized, and if you use an illegal club, or more than fourteen clubs, you are disqualified and you get nothing, even if the infraction was inadvertent and not deliberate. Cheating at the college or pro level affects so many people in so many ways, that it should be a felony with mandatory prison time if proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Enough of this coddling liars and cheaters. Nobody who is known to use banned substances should be honored with a plaque at Cooperstown.
