Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and director Martin Scorsese attend the London Film Festival Press conference for their movie The Irishman. They talk about the cast, de-aging VFX and Marvel theme park movies not being cinema... Shouldn't prove controversial at all...
During the interview they talk about why it took so long to make the film, Scorsese talks about his thoughts on releasing the movie on the Netflix platform and Al Pacino and Robert De Niro talk about what they thought the first time they saw themselves de-aged in the movie. The Irishman is based on the book by Charles Brandt.
The press conference was also attended by Producers Jane Rosenthal & Emma Tillinger Koskoff.
Plot: A mob hitman recalls his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa.

@@kattrakee Nobody that is living now are at the level of legendary that De Niro or Pacino enjoy. Maybe Jack Nicolson would be the closest thing following Meryl Streep. What a brilliant film. Saw it last night and it really makes you frustrated with how bad the current state of the movies industry is especially with Scorsese’s comment about marvel. It’s easily one of the top 5 of the decade. De Niro, Pacino and Pesci in particular are all at their best here. It’s a melancholic, mature and thoughtful movie which is wonderfully acted.

@@johnshields_ "Comic books aren't novels" is the distinction I think he's trying to make between "theme park experience" type films and cinema as he knows it, the same way that he makes a distinction in this interview between a long form TV mini-series that might feel "cinematic". But I don't know, where do you draw the line? I doubt Scorsese would argue that Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, The Terminator, Robocop, Hard Boiled, The Matrix, The Bourne Identity, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Kill Bill, or Mad Max: Fury Road aren't cinema. But it shouldn't be a quality identifier either. Battlefield Earth and The Room are still cinema. He's trying to identify a change in the form itself.

@@ryangettig274 I believe there's a new golden age coming, Directors like Scorsese, P. Anderson, Tarantino, W. Anderson, David Lynch, Brian De Palma, Alfonzo Curon, Woodie Allen and many others now and before are leaving an insane path of inspiration. It is so easy to watch a film these days, hey I wouldn't be so interested in them if it wasn't for streaming (or perhaps it would of took me longer to realize they are something more than time passers). Making a film too, easier than ever before! Think of all those potential Directors who just couldn't afford the equipment, so they just kept on puting it off or they just listened to the people that didn't believe in them. There are a lot of creative minds put to waste and I think there's more of an opportunity now if you have a realistic plan in place and you are not just going off luck. Film can only get more beautiful with new technology, but in some cases the old ways are always the best. I feel confident in the future of cinema

@Divine_D I mean, I am as well. Hollywood figured out that making those Action/Superhero movies will appeal to the majority and will always make money, which is the most important thing to them. You'll rarely even see great directors nowadays which says a lot really.

Is it me or do the filmmakers get asked really terrible questions in almost every Press Conferences. I just don't get it. Are these not professional reporters? They get one chance to ask a Q and its always something the filmmakers already mentioned/answered or something difficult to talk about.

I love Marty and I can't wait to see this film, but quite honestly I'm tired of hearing about the "communal experience" when it comes to viewing movies. Movie theaters suck. When do you think was the last time Martin Scorsese went to a public movie theater and sat with a general audience to watch a film? I'm not talking about an audience at a film festival or a world premiere (since they tend to be more respectful), I mean watching a film with normal, everyday people at a public screening. It's rarely a good experience. I'm there to see a film, I don't want to hear the guy next to me crinkling his gummy bear wrappers and stuffing his face full of popcorn. I don't want to hear the people behind me talking loudly, I don't want to see the guy in front of me on his cellphone. It ruins the experience and it happens more often than not. The "communal experience" is often a detriment to what I'm actually there to do, which is to experience a film without being interrupted or distracted. I wish people who argue that movies should be viewed in theaters with an audience would actually go to movie theaters more often so they could see what it's like now. It sucks. I have a huge HD TV at my house, and a good sound system. I can turn off the lights and turn up the volume and it won't be all that different from going to a theater. I wish the "theater standard" would die already.

Yeah, but what MS is talking about is a whole set of decorum and behaviors that went along with it, and that's what we don't have anymore. Every generation has something like this, it's the same thing as Proust talking about how great it was to go to the theater and see a certain actress and how incredible that was and how that doesn't exist anymore, etc., I'm sure it'll be the same for our generation, we'll be like -- oh you have no idea what it was back then, you could just go to youtube and watch a whole discussion with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, for free, and you could say whatever you wanted in the comments section and people would respond to you, and you could have these conversations, and you could do it all through the night and watch fascinating videos people made by themselves, and people were so interesting and polite, and people had their own channels devoted to great cinema, and there were tons of old movies, and you could watch them all for free, whenever you wanted, and you could listen to all your favorite music and albums, and everybody could respond to you -- it was this incredible thing, youtube, you have no idea how cool it was back then.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I love going to the cinema but I remember going to see The Social Network and the younger part of the audience were not even watching the film. Throwing pop corn at each other and talking throughout, it was a nightmare. The multiplex experience is not that dissimilar to a youth club frankly. A lot of films suffer because of that, cinema staff don't do enough to cater for the REAL cinephiles because it's all about money, which is understandable but it seems to be less about the film and more about the experience of being in a cinema. I did enjoy The Social Network a lot more on DVD!!!! I think that cinema's best era was the seventies when you look at the films that came out over that period. Nowadays it's all about spectacle which is why there are so many bad films. Visionary filmmakers are being shut out because the culture has changed, the younger audiences don't have that much cinematic knowledge.

@@christdaviesfilms I still do like going to the cinema occasionally, I just wish it wasn't the standard. I don't like the idea of being forced to go to the theater to see a film and having to wait 2+ months before it gets released on DVD/Blu Ray. It'd be great if movies had an opening weekend in theaters, and then after opening weekend the movies were available for rental at home, along with still being available in theaters for those who want the cinema experience. We should get a choice. I still have faith in movies since a lot of great younger filmmakers are getting a chance to make films now. People like Ari Aster, Jeremy Saulnier, Denis Villeneuve, Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro Inarritu, Yorgos Lanthimos are consistently putting out great stuff. Plus many of the greats are still working. Scorsese, Tarantino, Del Toro, Paul Thomas Anderson, etc. I agree that most mainstream films are little more than popcorn entertainment.

@@deathbyslipknot It would be sad to see independent filmmakers shut out of cinema at the expense of the blockbuster/theme park movies but I feel that The Irishman might strike the first blow to the current state of Hollywood if it does well. Like you I enjoy going to The Cinema, I love the auteurs that have something to say rather than escapist movies. PTA & Alejandro Gonzalez make amazing films. I did go to see Iron Man & enjoyed it, but it is no Revenant or 21 Grams!!!! I don't see film classes discussing Comic Movies as a film language, it will still be Hitchcock, Lynch & Scorsese. As you know comic book movies have been around a long time, in my opinion the Sam Raimi versions of Spiderman are better than the new ones & The Chris Nolan Batman films are beter than the Tim Burton ones. For every comic book movie there is about 50 independent films that nobody has even heard of. That's down to the role marketing plays now. It is really sad that comic book fans are attacking people that specialise in film because of an opinion. People that know anything about cinema will not be talking about comic book movies in 20 years time the way cinephiles talk about Goodfellas & Raging Bull today!!! It's just not going to happen.
