What a strong man to admit all of this. It takes so much healing and love for yourself to talk about the pain of your past and admit where you went wrong. Much love 🥰
He’s clearly put in a lot of work to be able to understand & speak on his past like this, with no excuses. Also one of the most underrated naturally funny comics, it made me happy to finally see him on JRE (even though his name has come up on dozens of episodes) and to see him looking so much healthier
“Don’t get upset at the moment because you don’t know yet whether it’s actually going to be a good thing or a bad thing”. That’s some good advice from Bobby Kelly.
So true, I'm sure we all have moments that seemed bad in the moment, but if we take some time to think about it, it might have helped us down the road.
There’s are a lot of takeaways from his story. The one that stuck out to me was he had some sort of male mentor in his life that encouraged him to be better. The teacher who encouraged him to run. The sense of community he felt when he befriended a group of his peers. The counselor that helped him get on the right path. I think young men are starving for this in today’s society. We have social media but we are more disconnected than ever. His story reminded me of Mike Tyson’s trainer, Cus D’Amato. One person is all it takes.
That’s why the Democrat Party incentivized more cash in your Ebt if you say you are single mother, thus systematically removing Fathers from households through lack of marriage. Having generations of kids not having positive role models
The realm…do you know what the realm is? It’s the thousand blades of aegons enemies, a story we agree to tell each other over and over until we forget that it’s a lie.

My father went to prison at 15 years old. He spent 6 years in different prisons-federal prisons. When he was leaving the prison the warden said” you’ll be back!” My dad said “ No I won’t!” He never went back, got married and raised 3 sons. Miss you dad.
Wardens and COs are by far some of the most evil people on this planet. Lots of times they are worse than the prisoners. If anyone ever tells you they're a career CO just assume they beat their family every night
I'm been smoking weed and drinking booze for 14 years and I'm only 25 1/2. Still struggling with sobriety. I'm a responsible stoner and drinker, but I am also cross-faded 24/7, fully functional and completely responsible, I just... can't stop, yet. It's not that bad of an issue for me as I'm fully functional but it definitely is hurting my heart and liver a bit. I just need a friend to tell me to stop being so fucking stupid, but when you got no one, a bowl of weed and a bottle of booze is pretty nice.
@@RNG-999 I’m your friend now, stop being fucking stupid 😂 at least start with tapering down on the amount alcohol & set a day when you will stop completely. If it doesn’t stick the first try, that’s not failure that’s another chance at success & we try as many times as it takes But you really can handle smoking by itself, that’s doesn’t sound like a problem at your age and I don’t doubt you can save weed for a certain time at night to indulge. (I finally got to only smoking or edible before bed. It is every night, but it only takes like 3 puffs or a 20mg for me at this point, with the right product)

Exactly. You have to first get a young man’s attention. Then once you have it , show love. But in a way that lets him know that transgression the boundaries will result in the old lion holding court again. It takes a strong hand. And a willingness to go all the way. If the reject it then the answer is - get the fuck out. You’re grown. Go be grown on your dime.

I did the same thing. I would take my lunch money, go to the store and buy ice cream and candy, wait until my Mother left and just eat and watch tv all day.
Had a great conversation with this man at The Laugh Factory in Chicago recently. One of the funniest people on the planet! Also, can totally empathize about the food. I've struggled with the same thing, too

My father said his biggest regret was letting me get railroaded into the system . At 12 years old, I was thrown to the wolf's and it was the start of a very long road. And just like this guy, being raised in the system , I came across some people who truly cared and literally planted the seeds that changed my life. It took giving up my youth and eventually spending some hard, violent years in federal prison. But those seeds planted by those caring adults at a young age , and being shown love by my parents , no matter how misguided it was sometimes, eventually brought me back on the right path.

Mr Kelly thankyou for sharing part of your life with us. It was truly heart warming. Our perception determines our reality and it is truly heartbreaking how society paint such a dim outlook for those that are willing to except it. I believe that inorder for us as a people to come back to our humanity, we must first take accountability of who we are as an individual and then start to see the potential good in everyone else. Do everything you can to never let resentment take hold of your mind, for it will most certainly take over your heart. May we all be careful of what we are willing to answer for to the Creator and may God bless everyone according to the content of their hearts.
God... every time I hear Bobby tell his story. Hes from Boston im from Jersey. His story is so fucking parallel with mine. Im so grateful to listen to Bobby's story. He helped me soooo much dude. God i wish i could just have a conversation with him. Ive been through the same process, jails and institutions, thank God the 3rd one death hasn't gotten us. Thank You Bobby
This sounds like my childhood. I had no one. I drank & did drugs so I could have friends. I didn't end up in prison. I think that's why it took me so long to get clean. Went to rehab for my 50th birthday. Clean for 5 years now. Really wish it would've happened a lot sooner. But I'm doing it!
I've heard bits and pieces of Bobby's life over the years, like being in juvie and being an addict, but hearing about it in so much detail makes me love and respect the guy even more. He's been through a lot.
I had a very similar childhood and got stuck in the juvenile system just like he did. I'm 40 years old now and I can tell you the difference between people like me and him, and the kids who never get out of the system is one simple thing: at least one decent adult cared enough to show us a different path and believed in us. But I carry a lot of guilt that I got out and other people I cared about at the time are now in prison or dead. We need more adults to step up and help these kids.
Holy shit! Robert Kelly's story is earily like my own!! He's someone I'd spend a lot of time trading stories with. Right down to being sober at a young age. Amazing!!
So happy for Bobby. I’ve been listening to these stories on oanda for the longest and now that he’s getting his life together he gets to tell them on the biggest podcast

Patrice - Bobby, it’s called strong-armed robbery!!! That’s even worse than armed robbery!! It means you’re so scary you don’t even need a weapon to rob someone!!
That is one of my favorite O & A shows with Patrice talking about how angry Bobby is and about his childhood. And Patrice saying strong arm robbery. So good.
That story of him as a boy broke my heart. Thank goodness for people like his 6th grade teacher. Why don’t we place a higher value on mentors and the idea that it takes a village to raise children. That way, when you find a child in obvious need, they’re helped so that they can become healthy well adjusted adults? Instead we punish children for how they’ve been raised, & create future generations of socially maladjusted, depressed, angry, dysfunctional, adults, many who either wind up in prison, committing suicide, dying early from autoimmune diseases, or becoming victims or predators, perpetuating further abuse & misery. Instead it’s all about infamy & falseness. It’s about consumption & greed. Greed begets power. And we laud that. If only we valued the well-being of children & other individuals alike.
We just need more ppl saying it out loud so the kids hear it. I tell my kids all the time what real life success is about as often as possible. Do something you care about and surround yourself with love and support.
Unfortunately being a teen kid is rough. When I stopped drinking and doing drugs my “friends” quit calling and there was some lonely times. I found the gym and it worked for me

I was as an RN for 32 years and worked for several years in drug & alcohol rehabilitation. My experience led me to one simple conclusion: If you truly want to get clean you have a chance.
