Us kids were playing football in the yard, January 1st, 1973. My Dad came out and said Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash. We fell down in the grass and cried. He was my boyhood hero, #21....Roberto Clemente!

I am Puerto Rican and still crying every time I see something about Clemente. I was just 10 years old when he died and when see what happened to him I bring me back to those days. I am 57 and just feel like I am 10 again. Thank you for making this video for him. Unfortunately in Puerto Rico the people have forgotten him. This is the way I can feel that. God bless you.

Mr. Clemente would have the status of Ali, had he lived to retire from MLB with his stats that would have made him a first entry into the HOF, and continued to serve the people he loved the most-the people without a voice- he would have been a force which could not be denied. He was so much more than a baseball player, a great one at that, but he also a great, honorable man. Granted, this is just the opinion of an older fan who grew up loving baseball and like most AL fans, considered (rightly so ) that Al Kaline was incredible in RF while playing for the Detroit Tigers from 1954-1971. I watched from right field seats Kaline play dozens of times. He was also underappreciated in the AL as Roberto was in the NL, but while watching the '71 WS from Okinawa, I became a true Clemente fan and respected his off field life. I had heard the stories from sports writers all the negative things said, but paid little attention to them or Roberto as he was in NL, Kaline was in AL, so it was nothing to me before the World Series in 1971. Before going to Vietnam, learning of his death hit me harder than I let anyone know, except my childhood friend who joined the Corps with me and was a baseball nut. I still love the honorable was he conducted his life and believe that if just a FEW men, regardless of sport, were like he was, we would have less stress and more love in this country. Sorry for the length of post. I truly thank you for this short doc on Roberto Clemente.

Roberto Clemente was my hero even though I was born in 1970 and never saw him play Yet as a child growing up in Puerto Rico I remember being in awe of his highlights but the one thing that brought tears to my eyes and made me proud was his humanity and how he was willing to sacrifice his life just to help others out and that is how he passed on to always remembered as a great baseball player on the field but above all as a great humanitarian.I am almost certain that if he was alive today his Puerto Rican pride would have been as evident as ever and after seeing the love and admiration that the sport and the fans have towards him no matter the difficult and tumultuous times he went through in his days as a player he would eventually have been Proud to be an American and would have most likely also been a Steelers fan.”As American as apple pie” RIP Roberto Clemente #21 🇵🇷 🇺🇸

I was 9 years old in 1960, and saw him play many, many times at Forbes Field and whenever the games were on TV. He was the greatest players I've ever seen. Baserunners would think twice about trying to go from 1st base to 3rd base, or from 2nd base to home plate. He had a cannon for an arm.

@Guide1089
@Guide1089 4 года назад
@@howardkwastel6188 I was in Okinawa during '71 WS. I was so impressed with this man's ability. Then, within months, he was gone. He was not just a great ball player, he was a humanitarian. When I heard of his death which was due to his plane crashing, which was carrying life saving supplies to Nicaragua, it left a hurt in my heart for his type of man. He was so rare. There was a terrible earthquake and he volunteered his own work, not just sign a check then call a press conference to show you''re a humanitarian. He was truly an exceptional MAN! I watched Al Kaline play many times right field because I grew up in Detroit and skipped school to go to Tiger Stadium. Kaline threw out many base runners and was the best I had seen. Then, the '71 World Series made me realize Al Kaline may have a man who had a better arm than he had, which shattered me! I was a hard core Kaline lover, but Roberto stole a piece of my baseball heart. He is still one of my all time favorite athletes regardless of sport. He was special.

I was very young when Roberto Clemente die on that fateful plane crash, in route to Managua, Nicaragua, in 1972. I believe I was around 9 yrs old. But I still remember, how thousands of Puertoricans, went to the area where the plane supposedly crashed, by the beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My family and I went there too, like if Roberto some how would come out of the water alive. That was when I realized, how much that man meant to us Puerto Ricans. He will always be remember, as one of the greatest athletes from Puerto Rico, loved by millions of fans around the world! He definitely made me, and many other Puertoricans, proud to be from that very small Island, in the middle of the Caribbean Archipelago.

Greatest player I ever saw. His performance in 1971 World Series was spectacular. What great player. There aren't enough superlatives to describe the man. Will never forget him. 4 batting titles, .317 lifetime avg. 3k hits.(he was 1 of 3 hitters to hit .300 in 1968. Yaz won AL title with 301. Pete Rose & Clemente battled it out for NL crown, but Pete won) he'd have won more but missed having enough plate appearances. Greatness! I just found out my daughter has the same birthday as he did, August 18. Wow! I never knew his birthday. I'm elated. He was & is my favorite player. When I played RF during my playing days, I was happy as Roberto played RF. I had 2 of his baseball cards 1970 & 1968.(my mom threw them out when I joined the Navy) I cherished those cards. Suprised I didn't remember his birthday. We'll never see another like him.

I am 63 YO, and grew up 1.5 hours East of Pittsburgh. Other than my dad, Clemente was my hero! Little League and pick-up baseball was HUGE back then. I copied his basket catch, behind the back catches, batting stanch, etc. my dad took me to see Clemente when they played at Forbes Field. I don’t remember much about the game, but watching him take outfield practice and batting practice was a childhood highlight. I was devastated when his plane went down. Thanks for posting the video. I can never get enough Clemente.

@Chris Don't waste your time, nobody is in the same class as Clemente. I am in agreement but MLB may never go for it. The feedback from the Jackie Robinson camp and others is that it will take away from 42. I understand that. I also undertand very well that Clemente had to fight a color AND language barrier. The good new is that the players are taking this into their own hands. All player want to wear an idol's number. Latino player wanted to wear 21, but now they consider it "off-limits" out of respect. Some have said they are not worthy of wearing it - respect. Non-Latino players will undertand and they too, out of respect, will not wear it. I think it won't be long before we no longer see it on a baseball field at the pro level. Problem solved.

@@gianna8483 thank you. But it was 1975. (I was okay with it, until a girlfriends son in 1990 collected. He had a Beckett for baseball, I looked at the prices just for the fun of it. Man I got sick, Pete Rose $120, Johnny Bench close to that. The Nolan Ryan rookie with him & Koosman was $1200! I almost cried. Lol. But I've got several complete sets, from 1989 to 1995 baseball, football & basket ball. I've got Michael Jordan's card in White Sox uni,etc. They're in my closet I gave them to my grandson, I told him when you're Papa's age you can sell them...he's 10 now. So in 50 yrs ...). Remember Clemente won world series MVP in 1971 against the Orioles. The Orioles starting staff had four 20 game winners in Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson. After his rookie season with the Pirates, Clemente was driving his car in Puerto Rico. A drunk driver rammed his car with his own. The back of his car was crushed. The back seat completely crushed to where the trunk of the car was in the back seat. Clemente had back problems through his career like Mantle had knee problems. Clemente would twist his neck side to side. He had a cannon for a throwing arm. He was very generous as he died flying food and supplies to earthquake ravaged Nicaragua. It was on New Year's in 1973. He didn't want to wait as he knew people were starving.

We lived in Oakland a suberg of pittsburgh right downtown near Forbes field there was an area that we could sneak in the field and watch the game Roberto was the best to everyone , even though his English was not understandable ,he would stay at the park all day and night never would walk away from you ,stay with you as long as you were there oh!!! to see his plays ,and it was all his plays did everything without mistakes ,like bill masaroski second base never make an error Everybody kid growing up I’m the right fielder no.21 Roberto Clemente so when I played baseball I played right field never got shirt 21 I had don clendan no. 17 first baseman no.17 but I was mainly a pitcher but I could throw you out from rightfield. I’m a white man guess my sons name Clay Clemente Roberto was loved by the kids in all the area
