I do like how they develop Guy throughout the series, taking a character from the original stories, often forgotten, and making him much more important

A UK tv A-list guest cast for this one: John Nettles, George Baker, Phil Davis. I seem to recall that Richard had neglected to put on his armour at the time he was shot, and that he lived for a good few days before he finally died. He lived into is forties, which isn't bad for someone who had a reputation for taking risks.

Crossbow! Cool weapons but not as cool as the good old fashioned recurve bows. Yeah, I was surprised to see Gisbourne. I reckon it looked way more serious for him than it actually was. He's too good of a villain to get rid of yet. I love how this show manages to be chock full of crazy characters. It's never a dull moment!

Crossbow! This series is so good, it's great to see someone like yourself who has an appreciation of history and of these sorts of tales react to it, after not seeing it myself since it first aired, Alexa.

Crossbow!🏹 I like George Baker in this episode, he made a nice Dad. And Phil Davis is excellent as King John.

I have this series on DVD. It's a truly under appreciated TV series. I always imagine what they could've achieved with a large budget. The soundtrack by Clannad is spellbinding.

They DID have a large budget. But it wasn't wasted. Every penny of it went into creating the gritty lived in world you see on screen, production values which has never been bettered in any of the subsequent Robin Hood retellings. And that large budget per episode eventually turned into a problem when the production company faced a financial crisis. A planned final season 4 was dropped and the show only lasted 3 seasons.

A good start to the new series (it wasn't intended to be originally, but more on that another time), with plenty of political intrigue, action and treachery. The Sheriff is missed, but it's interesting to see Gisburne start to show some cunning and political nous, and Phil Davis is enjoyably villainous and vile as Prince John. Once again, the outlaws don't get everything their own way - Marian's father is freed, but John's accession to the throne casts a shadow at the end. I do think the ending is a little abrupt, as I would like to know what Robin intends to do with Mark aka Henry. I am also not entirely clear how John intended to use Marian's father to ensure his succession, but it seems his plan was to deploy him as a bargaining chip to rally the reluctant barons to his side. As King Richard died in April 1199, five years must have elapsed since the end of the first series. The story goes that Richard did actually forgive the man who fired the crossbow before he died, but that he was killed anyway. I think the consensus amongst historians is that Richard died from gangrenous infection of the wound.

Another very strong episode of a great show. I have the whole of Robin of Sherwood on DVD. Several comments show people interested in the history, which I do know something about. I think Phil Davis' depiction of John, although comedic, accords well with what is known about him. However, one anachronism in particular leaps out to me. John is referred to as "Prince John" throughout this episode, but in this period the sense of the word 'prince' to denote a monarch's relative (the main way we use the word today) was unknown. John would have been called by the title "Lord" I think, his official title was "Count of Mortain." The word 'prince', being derived from the Latin 'principio', meant a sovereign ruler This was important to the history of the time, because major rulers in Wales, subject to the Kings of England, were developing a habit of styling themselves as princes to elevate themselves above the smaller rulers, often called kings, in Wales. This enraged Henry II (Richard and John's father) because it implied a repudiation of his sovereignty over them, and this started wars with the Welsh Another thing - Alexa, you are wrong about John's extreme taxes being the cause of the barons' rebellion against his rule. People always complained of oppressive taxes, so it is not suprising that the issue is prominent in Magna Carta. But John's taxes were not as oppressive as those of Richard. The cause of the rebellion was that John's unpredictability and unfaithfulness to those who thought they were on the right side of him made him a very difficult King to serve. He did not know how to manage people and keep them loyal - his selfishness needled everyone. For example, he alienated his tenants-in-chief by bedding their wives, a trait hinted at by the harem in this episode

Crossbows at dawn. I can't argue about King John, but my wife studied the period *in detail* (with one of the leading scholars of the period) and King John was not a bad king. (He wasn't forced to sign the Magna Carta, he *wanted* it.)

It's a myth that those staircases were for defence. They were status symbols and only appeared in the richest castles. The myth started in the 20th century, when it appeared, unsupported by evidence, in a castle's guidebook. Sadly, it has spread far and wide ever since.

I'm torn between this series and 'Maid Marian and her Merry Men' as the best Robin Hood series of the 1980's. 😉

This is a great episode with a completely psychotic King John. They had to keep Nikolas Grace out of this one, can’t have two actors that loud sharing scenes.
