It's had some rough moments in its dev cycle where they kept scrapping and reworking in-run progression due to not really settling on a consistent, fun set of core mechanics for the stats. But they definitely nailed the feel of gunplay and the presentation even early on, and they seem to have really hit their stride with that run progression system. Man, the hub is wildly different now though. Early access was just a circular area surrounded by cliffs. The reworked hub they advertised is stunning. Now, you could say it's the... Robo-best.
Already put 50+ hrs into it. Really fun thing. Combat and movement mechanics are simply fantastic. Runs are varied enough thanks to a rich arsenal and nice selections of perks, that consequent runs feel fresh and engaging (and faster and smoother, thanks to familiarity with levels and permanent progression system).
Genuinely one of the best coop games I've played. Gonna go listen to the ost now. Edit: So, you can jump out of the slide then chain them together which is HUGE for the movement and speed of the game. If you're not doing that then the movement feels a lot more basic.
Great review, but I feel like you undersold the movement, and the gameplay you showed made it look like you weren't completely used to it. The movement feels insanely good imo. The double jump, head stomping, and sliding allow you to constantly vary your movement, and as you progress through the game you only get more options (some of the later gadgets are insane). Also... you killed buddybot!
Guardian is quickly becoming one of my favorite classes. It’s rare to find a game that makes the defensive class fun to play. I just like the resource management that comes with it
I've started playing this in early access when the in-run progression was dead-cells like, with you specking into certain colors that correspond with the weapons you are using. I´m honestly happy they scrapped that. They created something beautiful here and I can´t remember when I last had this much fun with a game.
Its like borderlands meets gunfire reborn and i think thats wonderful. So far i've had a blast playing it. I just unlocked the Engy class and im stoked to see how it works
I downloaded out of boredom with everything else I have and played for 10 hours without break my first day playing this. I had no idea I'd love it as much as I do
Yes, why is it so Niche, it's the best shooter in years and it doesn't even have blood, which is usually a fun killer, not even oil but it somehow works. Also z can't believe this years shoot aristocracy is double AA RoboCop game and Indie Robot themed Rougelite.
As good as the gameplay feels, the game is worth getting for the soundtrack alone. Noisecreams work on this, My Friend Pedro and Midnight Fight Express are insanely good.
I've had this game for a year or two in early access and has been my go to game for when i just want to shoot some bots and see what cool weapon i can get and see how far ill make it. Super fun. I've never played with another person yet too
curious to know if you've been playing more since the review. You said at one point "fans of movement shooters may find it stiff..." but I think once you've gotten a certain few upgrades and unlocks, and start to use the movement from things found during runs you can turn this game into one of the quickest and most insane movement shooters that exists. Was wondering if you've gotten those unlocks and stuff and have played around with the movement at all.
The only thing I don't like about this 1.0 release is the nerf of my precious assault pistol (the deagle) the aim spread feels like way more than before. Still an absolute blast of a game though and the robo bolter is a worthy trade
today i conoleted it on guardian one first hardcore mode and it was blast really fun and challaging game and o had fun collecting collectables, and crystals
Spark: Bought Roboquest after your enormous praise and it loves the game. Though, there is one thing it wanted to disagree with you. The game is really movement shooter heavy. You can gather a lot of speed by stringing power slides and jumps together. In its opinion, movement is vital to survive the later levels.
Can confirm they have fixed the framrate issue and implemented a frame lock, it still kinda dips on my system in the heat of combat from 144 to 120, but thats most likely my fault because i love running an explosives build lmao
Disagree about the slide being mediocre. Chaining slide jumps together is INTEGRAL to staying alive. The slide is extremely responsive and most of all F U N. Sliding in any direction and jumping then sliding off what you jumped on, etc…. It’s one of the best slide mechanics I’ve ever played in combination with the other presented move sets
overwatch if it was fun and they didnt remove the promised campaign so they could resell a mission from it. and it actually has interesting art direction and a coherently built world.
Game used to have dash in earlier version, but they replaced it with slide for some reason, which made the hame feel objectively worse. Its still a great game, but that was a huge step back in yerms of game feel, no idea why they did this
It’s shockingly unoptimized. On steam deck even on low it drops to 40fps. How I don’t know (3D artist here. So i’m even more shocked). I’ve just completed Deadlink and that game runs locked 60fps on high with much more detail. I purposely don’t compare it to Doom Eternal (also 60fps on max), because i know indies don’t have the same resources to (always) optimise games super well, but Deadlink or even beautiful games like Lies of P are 60fps. It’s rare to see a stylised indie running so bad.
I have a question: Within this genre, how the heck have you not reviewed Gunfire Reborn yet? It's one of the best shooter-roguelites out there. Great progression and gun feel, incredible aesthetic, runs pretty well as far as I've ever seen, cute characters and tons of content. The devs took a little bit of inspiration from the Borderlands format, but there's a little touch of Warframe in some of the gun designs, which I found to be a cute little nod. Full four player, too. And some of the weapons are among the most unusual and fun I've seen in any of these games, like a set of flying needles that follows your aim, and a compass that tags all enemies in range with an expanding wave like a radar pulse.
Still frustrating to me there isn’t a better way to match make, sometimes it takes like 10 minutes to find another player, and they’ll either give up after 20minutes, or just leave. It’s a shame because the co-op is amazing but can’t seem to get anyone to play consistently🤣
Pretty good game but after a while it started to bore and annoy me at the same time. Might check it out now that it is 1.0, maybe it changed in that regard. If nothing else all those wip doors and vendors might be in the game now.
i have played this game since around 2021 about a year after they put it out in early access. they nailed the feel of the game all the way back then and just kept improving on it into the master class of arena shooters it is today. by far one of my favorite games right up there with ultrakill, dusk, and doom eternal. the only real thing i disliked at first when it fully released was they wiped all my progress from early access... i get why they did it but still sucked i had to get everything back, it was fun but still fuck you devs lol.
Honest question here: For those who like Roboquest, do you also like Gunfire Reborn? How different is it from that game? I hated Gunfire Reborn. Because! Because, because... The actual shooting was slow and boring. The movement was slow and boring. The game progression was slow and boring. The game was designed like a Free to play phone game. So, is it different enough from Gunfire Reborn that I might like it??
This is literally me a couple days ago, played gunfire reborn, hated the movement, watched a RU-vidr streaming roboquest, bought it, and never looked back. Roboquest just fixes all the little gripes I had about gunfire
i havent played gunfire reborn. but from the gameplay footage it always looked slow and quite passive, the level design seemed to be lacking. so never tried despite it having solid roguelite elements peogreesion etc or so i heard Roboquest is amazing. the gunplay is solid every gun feels amazing, also combat movement seems passive in foitage but while playing you would be constantly doing deliberate micro-management on your movement direction/height which is lost on gameplay footage from outsiders pov. game has double jump and good flight control. the combat arenas are also really really good with great elevation and vantage points, briken walls and stuff to take some sneak shots and other hurtbix like lava/toxic waste pool etc . the weapon feels and sounds amazing. and the movement is not crazy fast but it is more than enough and the gameplay is really well balanced around it. it is great. i'd say, trust this video and get it, the game is worth it.
@@worldofoblivion977 I found majority of the scrolls and upgrades to be worthless to me except for the few that altered gameplay (3rd dash, extra grenades, get max hp when in melee range, etc.). Most of them were +5% to fire damage, +damage for last shot, That's what I was talking about when I said the progression was boring and it felt like a mobile game. Once you figured out the few guns that worked best, a run was frustrating waiting for them to show up. That was mainly because the shooting and movement mechanics were, again, slow and boring.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS makes sense as 1.0 only dropped 12 days ago, will say though not much really changed since then, 1 new character, and a few perks. game is extremely short, took me 2 days to complete fully collecting all the gems and beating the game with each character, really the grind is the museum which takes more time, games worth it if you're an achievement hunter like me but most people would say it loses it's value pretty quick unless you have friends to play with, though I am quite excited to see what content they push out with the game. (honestly thought the video was uploaded longer than today lmao my bad)
It’s so much more than a jump/dash shooter. Besides nailing that movement, it’s smooth and fast like a colorful doom eternal, it’s a well done rogue light game too.
