They are signed with a company called CUBE entertainment…their company of course deal with promotion, manufacturing physical album, etc… But they are called self-producing group because they compose, produce, write, arrange their own music…they also took part in MV directing, choreo, concept, fashion, design, everything…

their songs tomboy and never stop me have some rock sound on it that you might like... they are called self-producing group because 3 of their members participates in producing their own music... all of their title tracks were co-produced or produced by their leader which is also their main rapper

I'll summarize: GIDLE is a Cube Entertainment group. This company is known for poor management and lack of investment in idols. Generally, k-pop girl groups are not encouraged to compose and produce. Soyeon (leader and rapper), composed all of the group's titles and 90% of the albums. Soyeon said that for Tomboy's comeback (please react to this MV), he needed to urge management to invest more if they want bigger results. She definitely stands out. In her songs, she likes to transfer some message to make us reflect. For example, in Nxde, in addition to being a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, it is a critique of how people eroticize the naked body or how people get irritated/frustrated when we show our true face. Not suppressing other people's expectations.

Didn’t she say when they told her they can’t do nude, she knew they had to do it. And either nude or tomboy, when she asked for investment she said she’d take the fall if it didn’t work out. I love how openly they hate on cube 😌

The traditional way of kpop is korean labels hold auditions and they select people based on their rapping, singing and dancing. After that, they are put into a rigorous training period within the label, and the duration of this period completely depends on how good the trainee is, it can be for less than a year to maybe even 7 years. The label then choose the trainees who're going to be in their upcoming group and they announce that they're gonna debut a new girl group or a new boy group. But the thing is, most of these kpop groups do not have any kind of a creative control over their music or anything they do, so basically if your dream is to be an actual artist that makes lyrics and produces songs, it'd be really hard in the kpop industry especially for woman. These labels are so controlling of their artists with many restrictions to not destroy the perfect image of a kpop idol. (G)I-DLE is the group which is going against their label and still makes money for them. The only well known girl groups who write and produce their own songs are gidle and mamamoo.

I mean companies are putting millions of dollars to promote a new group and if one of them did drugs or has dating scandal and makes the group flop? that would a lot of loss of money. A small company would just go bankrupt after one group like BigHit did with Glam. Most girls and boys in their early 20s or teens just do not have enough time or life challenges to make good music. So lots of them do get to make music though when they have like 5+ years of experience under their belt.

What Oz said in the comments explained things very well. You got a little spoiled, being new to k-pop, you experienced Soyeon's top tier rapping. Soyeon (rapper and group leader) is one of the very best rappers in all of k-pop, and she is still ascending. all the members of the group are still ascending. Their music and videos get better and better and better. If you want to see more of (G)I-DLE's music videos, I highly recommend "OH MY GOD", "LION", and "HWAA" just for starters. They have many more videos too, but those are a good start and you'll be amazed at how good their songs and their videos are. Thank you for a wonderful reaction to our girls!

One thing I've noted about this mv is that it nods to several female stars in the past that were vilified for embracing their sexuality, with a message of "I do not exist for your satisfaction, your problem with my body is not my problem"

Dude, the West is light years behind what's been happening in the KPOP industry. Every group and/or solo artist has a "guide" that gives a bio on each member, a history on the group and in some cases a brief history of the KPOP industry. Check out groups like BTS, Blackpink, Mamamoo, GIDLE, and solo artists like IU, Ailee, and Jessi. Almost every song has a Color Code Lyrics video which provides English subs and matches it up to the group member singing. Almost every mv has a "behind the scenes/making of" video that gives you an idea how the video was made and off stage interviews with the group members. There's a Netflix documentary, LIGHT UP THE SKY, on the biggest girl group in the world, Blackpink. One of the things they covers is a conceptual understanding of the KPOP industry. Watch it first, then get into groups and solo artists. It's an entire new universe of entertainment. Welcome to the rabbit hole known as KPOP.

Thanks Robert. I am for sure behind. I am trying to find the best time to check out the behind the scenes stuff. I think getting into the music blind is part of the fun, but I do find it fascinating.

1:07 yes, it's very common, kpop groups usually have at least one rapper but most have two (one main and one lead), groups that have more of a hiphop style can have up to 3 like Stray Kids and BTS

One of the members of (G)I-DLE is a huge fan of rock and has rock-esque solo songs, some of which she participated in writing/producing! The member is Yuqi (pronounced Oo-gi) and the songs are Bonnie & Clyde and Giant! Also, I have a guide on my channel that helps you get to know how these girls work, their personalities, the behind-the-scenes, and their involvement in their music so if you'd be interested in checking that out I'd be honored!

they are self producing because except some Bside songs from their first mini album and some collab projects, all other songs are made by themselves, including concept, composing, lyrics, and producing. Soyeon, minnie, and yuqi (3 members who make songs) have a few different other producers they like to collab with, but their names are often the first in credits, so they actually do lots of the behind the scene stuff instead of just lightly “participate” in it.

4:12 they were created by the company they belong to, that's the case for almost every kpop group. People who want to be idols audition for specific companies and if they pass they become trainees. They must take voice, dance and even language lessons (depends on the company). However, being a trainee doesn't garantee debuting. Idol groups are carefully handpicked by agency executives. In this case (G)I-DLE is in Cube Enterteinment.

Recommend their albums I LOVE and I NEVER DIE albums, the songs are produced by the group members Soyeon, Minnie and Yuqi (along with co-music producers like PopTime, BOYTOY, Houdini, etc.) Self production in K-pop often means one or several members of the group bring the song main material (it may be the lyrics or the composition), I-DLE bring the base of the songs (composition and lyrics when co-music producers help to complete the song and the arrangement)

K-pop in a nutshell for those in the United States: Remember back when "boy groups" were a thing in the USA? How they had this huge teen following and an entire genre of pulpy magazines that would provide pictures, interviews, bio's, etc for each member of the group? Imagine if that trend never died out and was still a "thing", but now we have the internet. Imagine that it progressed past being a thing that teenage girls swooned over and became a cultural identity for the entire country... even a source of pride. This is the state of k-pop in many parts of the world.

Yeah, dive into K-Pop. Some great artists, performances. Top tier = (G)I-dle, see Oh My God or Lion M/V's. Check out Taemin, My Idea, Red Velvet m/v's. There is so much to like. 🤩🤩 See some of the award shows, 2020 MMA Awards, BTS. Understand, K-pop artists use lots of American producers too.

teenagers try out for different entertainment companies and when teens get picked, they go through years of training. Companies pick a theme or direction they want to go to and pick members according to the direction. Companies would consider singing skills, beauty, dancing skills, maybe rapping skills, or if a person is just likable. Teens go through these brutal process of elimination and the final trainees who are left will be hardworking, skilled, and ambitious.
